Actually, the LED strips were one of the things Gnome and I both liked about Chicago's arena.

Detroit should be ranked higher for the simple fan-friendly throwable beer cups.

reminded again tonight that Verizon Center is awful - Hal9000 has more personality. although, i will say, they decided to start dimming the upper bowl lights this year (i approve). probably a result of ****-tastic sales but it makes the experience less miserable.

Steak N Shake is not better than In-N-Out Burger unless you're only basing it on the shakes.

And as much as I like Indiana, there's no reason to visit here unless you're coming for a sporting event. Everything found here can be found in any other state. Indiana is a great place to live, but I can understand why outsiders find it so boring.

Um, hello.....Gen Con.....best four days in gaming and such, it's really an awesome experience if you've never been.
    That'll do.

40 is a bit high. Sure, some states don't have a reason to go there, but most do. Take the states with beaches and nice weather and you have more than 10. Add in tourist landmarks(Arch in Missouri, Mt Rushmore in South Dakota, national parks in Wyoming, Fort Sumter in South Carolina, etc) and it's covered.

Granted, I excluded sporting events as a reason to come to Indy, which is the entire strategy behind the city of Indianapolis' growth.

Like I said, Indy is a great place to live -- not a terribly great place to visit for a tourist weekend. It's OK to be a native Hoosier and admit that.
OK, wait. These other metropolitan areas get to include sights outside the city but within the state, while Indianapolis doesn't? So we don't get to count Brown County or Indiana Dunes National Park? And you don't want to count sports, which is kind of like not counting the movies as a tourist attraction for LA, but OK, they are your rules.

Even with all that, then you still draw an awful lot of people from out of state for the following:

    - Children's Museum (best in the country according to many rankings, certainly best in the Midwest)
    - Zoo (Indianapolis Zoo is the national focal point for lemurs and other species of animals not found at other zoos. Oh, well, since we don't have a panda I guess we don't count.)
    - Indianapolis Museum of Art (nationally recognized for specific pieces in the collection, not including the other attractions on the grounds)
    - Scottish Rite Cathedral

Add in that during the summer and fall Indianapolis has festivals of a size to rival other much larger cities (I speak of Atlanta in particular and with full knowledge and experience).

I highly doubt he's ever even been to the Palace.

The comment about it being "too dark" is hilarious considering the team he covers turns all the freaking lights out during the game.
I don't see how the Palace is lower than #2 or #3 on the list. Certainly of the arenas I've been to, it is second-best.
Why do the things that we treasure most, slip away in time

Why do the things that connect us slowly pull us apart?
Till we fall away in our own darkness, a stranger to our own hearts
And life itself, rushing over me
Life itself, the wind in black elms,
Life itself in your heart and in your eyes, I can't make it without you

Not that it is on topic, but we spent the weekend in Atlanta a little while ago and ran out of things to do.

There are bigger places than Indy that are "great places to live, but not much to visit."

But yes, I can happily spend a weekend camping at McCormick's Creek or Lake Patoka.

I was in 405. Good sightlines but man the Verizon Center is a dump. The Fieldhouse is the Taj Mahal comapred to that place.

Arguing this point is lame. There's plenty to do in Indianapolis whether you're into sports or not. It's not LA, NYC, Chicago etc.. but I could find you a month's worth of unique stuff to do from morning to night w/o ever repeating anything.

That would be a Hall of Fame Museum for ... um ... what was it again ... RACING. Which is a SPORT. Not allowed.

If you're from a big city or used to living in a big city, you'll find Indianapolis boring and hard to adjust to. If you're from here or a small city in a surrounding state, there's lots to do.

funny thing...what does Cleveland, Ohio have that Indy doesn't? I know that they have the Rock and Roll Hall, but other then that...what else? By the way, we have the Speedway. They have The Flats, but if I want to get all kinds of public drunk...We have "Broad Ripple".

I get so tired of hearing how Indy is so inferior because there is nothing to do. We have as much "nothing to do as any other midwestern city outside of Chicago. What gives?

On a side, I do like "In-N-Out" a heck of a lot more then Steak N Shake, but that is probably because it is not here.

I've been to quite a few different arenas and I've ranked them according to how I felt about the atmosphere sitelines from where I sat and so on:

    1. Portland Rose Garden (Love the statboards. They want you to know what is going on! The game I went to was against the Sonics (geographical rival) and it was their home opener, but the building and crowd was amped!)
    2. Conseco Fieldhouse
    3. Chicago's United Centers (yes, I do like how they utilize the LED Ribbon boards. It's not just advertising. It is a darker arena, but very comfortable. It felt like I was in more of a theater then an arena.)
    4. Palace of Auburn Hills (One word...Mason! To me, he makes this worth being this high for me. I didn't really care for the building or how far away it was from Downtown.)
    5. Utah's Delta Center (Energy Solutions Arena) (Very basic building, but the fans bring this place to life)
    6. Seattle's Key Arena (The small size of the place gave it a "friendly confines" feel. Felt like the fans were on top of the court like MSA use to be.)
    7. Vancouver's General Motors Palace (A building for the Vancouver Canucks-NHL, nothing more...dead crowd, cavernous building. Other then a bad team... There is no doubt in my mind why this team ended up in Memphis!)
    ...Still "flying casual"

i'd say detroit, minneapolis, st. louis and even (if you consider it midwest) kansas city offer more than indianapolis too. it isn't really a criticism, but more a result of population/size and my own certain je ne sais quoi.

yup, i stand by that. let's forget the fact that each of these places happens to be a bigger metro area (in theory more people could mean more choice/opportunities) - one thing that i think gives each of these places an edge in my mind would be the artistic communities. no slight to goldfoot and his four bands, but indy's music scene is fairly uncompelling. st. louis and minneapolis have significantly more active and vibrant music scenes. also surprisingly minneapolis has an incredibly thriving theater scene with more theaters per capita than any other city except of course for NYC.

i'll admit kansas city is a stretch and i probably shouldn't have listed it given how little time i've actually spent there. i will say that i was plesantly surprised at how much there was to do (especially musically).

I agree with St. Louis, but those other places don't compare.

The Mall Of America and cold weather isn't enough for me to say that Minny is better than Indpls.

Yes. I think Conseco Fieldhouse is the best place in the country to watch a basketball game.

because when i think of what to do in a particular city the first question i ask myself is "i wonder what the mall is like..."

the only mall that should impact a discussion about what a city offers is when you're talking dc.
