The Rules of Pacers Digest

Hello everyone,

Whether your are a long standing forum member or whether you have just registered today, it's a good idea to read and review the rules below so that you have a very good idea of what to expect when you come to Pacers Digest.

A quick note to new members: Your posts will not immediately show up when you make them. An administrator has to approve at least your first post before the forum software will later upgrade your account to the status of a fully-registered member. This usually happens within a couple of hours or so after your post(s) is/are approved, so you may need to be a little patient at first.

Why do we do this? So that it's more difficult for spammers (be they human or robot) to post, and so users who are banned cannot immediately re-register and start dousing people with verbal flames.

Below are the rules of Pacers Digest. After you have read them, you will have a very good sense of where we are coming from, what we expect, what we don't want to see, and how we react to things.

Rule #1

Pacers Digest is intended to be a place to discuss basketball without having to deal with the kinds of behaviors or attitudes that distract people from sticking with the discussion of the topics at hand. These unwanted distractions can come in many forms, and admittedly it can sometimes be tricky to pin down each and every kind that can rear its ugly head, but we feel that the following examples and explanations cover at least a good portion of that ground and should at least give people a pretty good idea of the kinds of things we actively discourage:

"Anyone who __________ is a liar / a fool / an idiot / a blind homer / has their head buried in the sand / a blind hater / doesn't know basketball / doesn't watch the games"

"People with intelligence will agree with me when I say that __________"

"Only stupid people think / believe / do ___________"

"I can't wait to hear something from PosterX when he/she sees that **insert a given incident or current event that will have probably upset or disappointed PosterX here**"

"He/she is just delusional"

"This thread is stupid / worthless / embarrassing"

"I'm going to take a moment to point and / laugh at PosterX / GroupOfPeopleY who thought / believed *insert though/belief here*"

"Remember when PosterX said OldCommentY that no longer looks good? "

In general, if a comment goes from purely on topic to something 'ad hominem' (personal jabs, personal shots, attacks, flames, however you want to call it, towards a person, or a group of people, or a given city/state/country of people), those are most likely going to be found intolerable.

We also dissuade passive aggressive behavior. This can be various things, but common examples include statements that are basically meant to imply someone is either stupid or otherwise incapable of holding a rational conversation. This can include (but is not limited to) laughing at someone's conclusions rather than offering an honest rebuttal, asking people what game they were watching, or another common problem is Poster X will say "that player isn't that bad" and then Poster Y will say something akin to "LOL you think that player is good". We're not going to tolerate those kinds of comments out of respect for the community at large and for the sake of trying to just have an honest conversation.

Now, does the above cover absolutely every single kind of distraction that is unwanted? Probably not, but you should by now have a good idea of the general types of things we will be discouraging. The above examples are meant to give you a good feel for / idea of what we're looking for. If something new or different than the above happens to come along and results in the same problem (that being, any other attitude or behavior that ultimately distracts from actually just discussing the topic at hand, or that is otherwise disrespectful to other posters), we can and we will take action to curb this as well, so please don't take this to mean that if you managed to technically avoid saying something exactly like one of the above examples that you are then somehow off the hook.

That all having been said, our goal is to do so in a generally kind and respectful way, and that doesn't mean the moment we see something we don't like that somebody is going to be suspended or banned, either. It just means that at the very least we will probably say something about it, quite possibly snipping out the distracting parts of the post in question while leaving alone the parts that are actually just discussing the topics, and in the event of a repeating or excessive problem, then we will start issuing infractions to try to further discourage further repeat problems, and if it just never seems to improve, then finally suspensions or bans will come into play. We would prefer it never went that far, and most of the time for most of our posters, it won't ever have to.

A slip up every once and a while is pretty normal, but, again, when it becomes repetitive or excessive, something will be done. Something occasional is probably going to be let go (within reason), but when it starts to become habitual or otherwise a pattern, odds are very good that we will step in.

There's always a small minority that like to push people's buttons and/or test their own boundaries with regards to the administrators, and in the case of someone acting like that, please be aware that this is not a court of law, but a private website run by people who are simply trying to do the right thing as they see it. If we feel that you are a special case that needs to be dealt with in an exceptional way because your behavior isn't explicitly mirroring one of our above examples of what we generally discourage, we can and we will take atypical action to prevent this from continuing if you are not cooperative with us.

Also please be aware that you will not be given a pass simply by claiming that you were 'only joking,' because quite honestly, when someone really is just joking, for one thing most people tend to pick up on the joke, including the person or group that is the target of the joke, and for another thing, in the event where an honest joke gets taken seriously and it upsets or angers someone, the person who is truly 'only joking' will quite commonly go out of his / her way to apologize and will try to mend fences. People who are dishonest about their statements being 'jokes' do not do so, and in turn that becomes a clear sign of what is really going on. It's nothing new.

In any case, quite frankly, the overall quality and health of the entire forum's community is more important than any one troublesome user will ever be, regardless of exactly how a problem is exhibiting itself, and if it comes down to us having to make a choice between you versus the greater health and happiness of the entire community, the community of this forum will win every time.

Lastly, there are also some posters, who are generally great contributors and do not otherwise cause any problems, who sometimes feel it's their place to provoke or to otherwise 'mess with' that small minority of people described in the last paragraph, and while we possibly might understand why you might feel you WANT to do something like that, the truth is we can't actually tolerate that kind of behavior from you any more than we can tolerate the behavior from them. So if we feel that you are trying to provoke those other posters into doing or saying something that will get themselves into trouble, then we will start to view you as a problem as well, because of the same reason as before: The overall health of the forum comes first, and trying to stir the pot with someone like that doesn't help, it just makes it worse. Some will simply disagree with this philosophy, but if so, then so be it because ultimately we have to do what we think is best so long as it's up to us.

If you see a problem that we haven't addressed, the best and most appropriate course for a forum member to take here is to look over to the left of the post in question. See underneath that poster's name, avatar, and other info, down where there's a little triangle with an exclamation point (!) in it? Click that. That allows you to report the post to the admins so we can definitely notice it and give it a look to see what we feel we should do about it. Beyond that, obviously it's human nature sometimes to want to speak up to the poster in question who has bothered you, but we would ask that you try to refrain from doing so because quite often what happens is two or more posters all start going back and forth about the original offending post, and suddenly the entire thread is off topic or otherwise derailed. So while the urge to police it yourself is understandable, it's best to just report it to us and let us handle it. Thank you!

All of the above is going to be subject to a case by case basis, but generally and broadly speaking, this should give everyone a pretty good idea of how things will typically / most often be handled.

Rule #2

If the actions of an administrator inspire you to make a comment, criticism, or express a concern about it, there is a wrong place and a couple of right places to do so.

The wrong place is to do so in the original thread in which the administrator took action. For example, if a post gets an infraction, or a post gets deleted, or a comment within a larger post gets clipped out, in a thread discussing Paul George, the wrong thing to do is to distract from the discussion of Paul George by adding your off topic thoughts on what the administrator did.

The right places to do so are:

A) Start a thread about the specific incident you want to talk about on the Feedback board. This way you are able to express yourself in an area that doesn't throw another thread off topic, and this way others can add their two cents as well if they wish, and additionally if there's something that needs to be said by the administrators, that is where they will respond to it.

B) Send a private message to the administrators, and they can respond to you that way.

If this is done the wrong way, those comments will be deleted, and if it's a repeating problem then it may also receive an infraction as well.

Rule #3

If a poster is bothering you, and an administrator has not or will not deal with that poster to the extent that you would prefer, you have a powerful tool at your disposal, one that has recently been upgraded and is now better than ever: The ability to ignore a user.

When you ignore a user, you will unfortunately still see some hints of their existence (nothing we can do about that), however, it does the following key things:

A) Any post they make will be completely invisible as you scroll through a thread.

B) The new addition to this feature: If someone QUOTES a user you are ignoring, you do not have to read who it was, or what that poster said, unless you go out of your way to click on a link to find out who it is and what they said.

To utilize this feature, from any page on Pacers Digest, scroll to the top of the page, look to the top right where it says 'Settings' and click that. From the settings page, look to the left side of the page where it says 'My Settings', and look down from there until you see 'Edit Ignore List' and click that. From here, it will say 'Add a Member to Your List...' Beneath that, click in the text box to the right of 'User Name', type in or copy & paste the username of the poster you are ignoring, and once their name is in the box, look over to the far right and click the 'Okay' button. All done!

Rule #4

Regarding infractions, currently they carry a value of one point each, and that point will expire in 31 days. If at any point a poster is carrying three points at the same time, that poster will be suspended until the oldest of the three points expires.

Rule #5

When you share or paste content or articles from another website, you must include the URL/link back to where you found it, who wrote it, and what website it's from. Said content will be removed if this doesn't happen.

An example:

If I copy and paste an article from the Indianapolis Star website, I would post something like this:

http://www.linktothearticlegoeshere.com/article
Title of the Article
Author's Name
Indianapolis Star

Rule #6

We cannot tolerate illegal videos on Pacers Digest. This means do not share any links to them, do not mention any websites that host them or link to them, do not describe how to find them in any way, and do not ask about them. Posts doing anything of the sort will be removed, the offenders will be contacted privately, and if the problem becomes habitual, you will be suspended, and if it still persists, you will probably be banned.

The legal means of watching or listening to NBA games are NBA League Pass Broadband (for US, or for International; both cost money) and NBA Audio League Pass (which is free). Look for them on NBA.com.

Rule #7

Provocative statements in a signature, or as an avatar, or as the 'tagline' beneath a poster's username (where it says 'Member' or 'Administrator' by default, if it is not altered) are an unwanted distraction that will more than likely be removed on sight. There can be shades of gray to this, but in general this could be something political or religious that is likely going to provoke or upset people, or otherwise something that is mean-spirited at the expense of a poster, a group of people, or a population.

It may or may not go without saying, but this goes for threads and posts as well, particularly when it's not made on the off-topic board (Market Square).

We do make exceptions if we feel the content is both innocuous and unlikely to cause social problems on the forum (such as wishing someone a Merry Christmas or a Happy Easter), and we also also make exceptions if such topics come up with regards to a sports figure (such as the Lance Stephenson situation bringing up discussions of domestic abuse and the law, or when Jason Collins came out as gay and how that lead to some discussion about gay rights).

However, once the discussion seems to be more/mostly about the political issues instead of the sports figure or his specific situation, the thread is usually closed.

Rule #8

We prefer self-restraint and/or modesty when making jokes or off topic comments in a sports discussion thread. They can be fun, but sometimes they derail or distract from a topic, and we don't want to see that happen. If we feel it is a problem, we will either delete or move those posts from the thread.

Rule #9

Generally speaking, we try to be a "PG-13" rated board, and we don't want to see sexual content or similarly suggestive content. Vulgarity is a more muddled issue, though again we prefer things to lean more towards "PG-13" than "R". If we feel things have gone too far, we will step in.

Rule #10

We like small signatures, not big signatures. The bigger the signature, the more likely it is an annoying or distracting signature.

Rule #11

Do not advertise anything without talking about it with the administrators first. This includes advertising with your signature, with your avatar, through private messaging, and/or by making a thread or post.

I also probably watch more college bball than most. What's your point?

No one is saying Blair is top three material. Far from it actually. He should go somewhere in the 14-20 range. He will have a few issues in the NBA - namely his height (although he looked taller than I thought he would standing next to Thabeet- I think he'll measure closer to 6'9" in shoes than 6'7"). I would ideally like for us to pick up another first like last year to get him. Maybe I like the guy so much because I'm tired of having the likes of Troy "Charmin" Murphy get pushed around all the time. I want a guy on this team that says hey if you try and take this ball from me your getting taken down...

I just don't get the Ike comparisons at all. Ike was not a good rebounder. His bread and butter was a polished post game and the ability to hit the spot up jumper. This is clearly not one of Blair's strong points. The only player comparison I'm leary of for Blair is Craig Smith. They have virtually the exact same measurements.

Rasho was an expiring. Who else was in the trade: TJ Ford, Maceo Baston, and the 17th pick: Roy Hibbert.

Dun and Murph are good ball players. Jackson and Al were traded because of their me-first, team-last attitude. Remember Jackson working the refs while his man made a lay-up on the other end of the court? Or Al the black hole where no ball has ever returned except in the form of a shot? Who else did we get in the trade: Josh Powell.

Diener was a quality 3rd string PG signing.

And the Bayless trade? Besides McRoberts, who was trade filler as well as a local guy, we got the 13th pick: Rush, as well as Jarrett Jack.

I've not looked to see what the racial make-up of our team is compared to others and I don't care because I know as a fan that the Pacers have guys that play hard and know how to play the game and that we can be proud of: both on the court and off of it. Additionally, we have a core of young, smart, and talented guys that the Pacers will build around and, health-permitting, get better through the next few years.

        .........................

Yeah, it's a shame that Bird hasn't run out and traded for Luke Jackson.

ok lets not fool ourselves, to think the thought of skin color doesnt cross the Birds mind when looking at a player to add to the team, your overestimating him.

Does it matter, no. He obv doesnt base his decision on race but who cares.

By the way were for sure the whitest team in the league.

Granger and Dun out, our playoff hopes are smashed. Were probably looking at a top 10 pick. If we end up outside the top 5( blake, harden, Hill, Thabeet probably gone), I rly like Teague. All i kno is that we better not take Curry, and I dont wanna see Psycho T on the team either.

IF we don't atleast get a top-10 pick this summer I will be VERY, VERY pissed. The draft is weak this year, but we are not going to make the play-offs, never really believed that we would anyway this year (so no harm there), so play the younger guys and the players who will continue to be here next season aswell.

Develop and bring a new building block in the summer for next years team. IF there was ever a moment to not look at winning, but developing certain players now is the time.

I would like to get Teague and only resign Graham and McRob, assuming Diener stays with his option. Then hope for Jeff Pendergraph in the second. I really like Chris Johnson at LSU as well. Although I don't see him on a lot of mock draft boards (some in the second round) he reminds me of Anthony Randolph who I really wanted. If we could swing another second round pick to get him we would have an ok roster with room for a FA sign. I guess a like the idea of an athletic long PF next to Hibbert. Our roster would be

                  TJ/ Teague/ Deiner
                  Dun/ Rush
                  DG/ Graham
                  Troy/ Mcrob/ Chris Johnson
                  Hibbert/ Foster/ Jeff Pendergraph

I think that still gives us 5 or 6 mil for FA.

I finally got to watch a bit more of Teague yesterday, an old game but still. I'm not blown away by him, but there are interesting bits to his game. Definitely a guy to watch the rest of the way.

His teammate Aminu just looks too young and raw IMO. Really like to see him stay another year. He's another one of those Baston type of PFs, athletic and hoppy, can make some nice dunk moves inside, but just doesn't have a solid all-around basketball game nor the size to totally forgive that (see Blair who's size alone demands you take interest in him no matter what).

Teague for Jack could be a nice adjustment. I still like Henderson in that 6-8 range too. We weren't really looking for backcourt help in the draft to start this season, but at least with those 2 players it seems to make sense.

AJ Price is having another year like last in which he at times looks great and leads the team, but other time fades enough to not be a high pick. If he's on the board when your 2nd pick come up and you didn't get PG with the first one then I think he's a smart choice. I really think he can be that guy that has bursts of games where you love him, even though most of the time he's just meh. That's about the best you could hope from a normal 2nd round pick.

Mullens at Ohio St. Finally got to see him. Holy crap is he raw. I really hope he stays because picking him is just crossing your fingers and clicking your heels at this point.

So far, guys I'm sold on:
Griffin, Henderson, Thabeet (defense ONLY, don't expect anything else ever)

                    Guys with promise:
Teague, Blair, Singler(does he come out, wouldn't go this high), Jennings (wish we could see him in NCAA setting), Lawal

Need to see some more games:
Harden, Hill, Meeks (and still hasn't moved up tons on the board)

                    A bit concerned now:
Curry, Monroe, Aminu, Lawson (never have been fully sold on him), Summers (almost in the "shows promise" group)

                    Please no:
Harangody, PsychoT, Collison, Clark, Mullens, Budinger, T Smith, Patterson (also too soon)

Seems like we might only see 4-5 legit starters make it from this class. Not sure if this is a bad year or just normal but bad when compared to the ridiculously deep class of last year.

Agree. Despite the height aspect Ike and Blair playing nothing like each other. Blair plays with force and has the muscle to back it up. I have zero questions on his ability and actually like a lot of the game he's paired with it, meaning that he knows how to use what he has in a legal and effective way to get scores, set picks, rebound and defend.

But he's going to climb, just watch. Love started out last year around 18th. Rush was in the 2nd round. Westbrook was around 15-20 well behind Collison. When Blair comes out and shows that game vs Thabeet the scouts notice just like we do. That was a challenge against legit NBA size and Blair was able to still use his power game effectively. Questions answered.

Don't forget about Tyreke Evans of Memphis. He is currently running the point for them and is doing a darn good job of it.

                        Draftexpress.com
                        http://www.draftexpress.com/profile/Tyreke-Evans-1110/

A mid-season position change that seems to have changed the complexion of his team's season is certainly a good enough reason to revisit the topic of one of the NCAA's most talented freshman. Tyreke Evans was asked to handle the point guard duties for Memphis full-time after a home loss to Syracuse that dropped his team out the top-25 for the first time in over three years, and his team is undefeated since. They are currently ranked 5th overall in the nation, and Evans in turn is gaining steam for being awarded national freshman of the year honors.

It's not quite clear why analysts (or his coaching staff for that matter) are so surprised at the success he's found at the point—it was after all the only position we've ever saw him play from watching him in high school, prep school and the AAU circuit over the last three years. Clearly he is not “learning the position from scratch” like many have suggested.

Playing on the ball full-time, Evans has improved his efficiency while developing into the #1 scorer in this freshman class—putting up a terrific 23 points per-40 minutes pace adjusted. He also ranks as one of the top rebounding guards in college basketball, pulling down over 7 per-40, and is also one of the top ball-thieves at 3.1 steals per-40. His productivity in those categories is terrific all things considered. The problem is that he's almost amongst the NCAA leaders in field goal attempts and turnovers (at a dismal 4.5 per-40), highlighting one of his biggest flaws—his shoot-first mentality.

It's pretty obvious what Evans offers as a prospect, as he's one of the premier shot-creators in the country, despite being only 19 years old. His combination of strength, aggressiveness and scoring instincts is almost unparalleled at this level, and should translate to the NBA level effectively when you consider his terrific footwork, body control, and hesitation moves. He does an excellent job pushing the ball up the floor in transition, can create (and finish) with either hand almost equally as well, and is an absolute bulldozer slashing his way through the paint and creating contact at the rim. While not an incredible leaper, Evans knows how to get to the free throw line, which helps minimize the fact that he's not an incredible finisher percentage wise (just 50%). He's also become pretty effective at finding teammates off the dribble, which has helped him rack up a decent amount of assists.

Defensively, Evans has gotten better as the season has moved on, particularly on the ball. His terrific wingspan helps him tremendously in terms of contesting shots on the perimeter, and his excellent knack for getting in the passing lanes makes him a true nuisance with the way Memphis likes to press. Evans loses his focus from time to time in the half-court and tends to get out of his stance, also not doing a great job fighting through ball-screens. His potential on this end is impressive, though, and it wouldn't be shocking to see him be able to defend both guard positions in the NBA when it's all said and done.

As a point guard, Evans has been mostly a mixed bag. On one hand, he obviously possesses excellent basketball instincts and has a great sense for making plays for himself and others. Memphis is running a lot more pick and roll than they did last season, and Evans shows great potential in this area. The problem is that he's an incredibly ball-dominant point guard, often looking like a fish out of water when he's forced to give up the rock for more than a few seconds. Memphis' offense often looks quite stagnant, with Evans over-dribbling the ball at the top of the key as his four teammates stand around and twiddle their thumbs. He can be pretty sloppy with the ball at times, displaying questionable decision-making skills and incredibly poor shot-selection, which wouldn't be as much of an issue if he was able to make shots at a respectable rate from the perimeter.

With his poor shooting mechanics (he fades away unnecessarily on every attempt) Evans is very streaky with his feet set in catch and shoot situations, and downright dreadful shooting the ball off the dribble. He only converts a dismal 25% of his jump-shots according to Synergy Sports Technology, but the problem is that he settles for them on a regular basis—they make up about 40% of his possessions, often with a hand in his face and early in the shot clock no less. While his skill-set may develop in time, Evans' mentality looks extremely questionable—it's hard not to come away with the impression that he's a pretty selfish player. He's likely going to have to revamp his shooting stroke entirely if he's to ever become even a decent threat from the NBA 3-point line, something he's been unwilling to do up until this point.

There a couple of crucial judgments which will be made individually by each and every NBA team that will play a huge role in where Evans' draft stock ultimately lies. The first would be his likely position at the next level, point guard or shooting guard. The second would be whether he projects as a starter or backup at that position. The third would be whether he fits into what that team already possesses in terms of ball-handlers and outside shooters, as Evans clearly won't fit into every system. It would be very difficult to play him alongside another guard who is also not much of a threat from beyond the arc, as that would make things very easy on the defense. With the right teammates, though, and in a sparkplug/instant offense role, Evans could be very effective.

If Memphis is able to go on a deep run into the tournament, it wouldn't be shocking at all to see Evans' stock rise dramatically when it's all said and done.

                        ---------

Evans stock looks like it might pick up a little steam but I think he would be a solid 10-20 pick if he's still available. I guess it all depends on how Memphis does in the tournament.

I like Henderson too, he seems to be able to get to the line whenever he wants. At least that's the impression I got after watching last night's game.

If he's available in the 2nd round....would he be worth a spin?
I really like that comparison because JD had his own mental issues I thought as well (in his case temper), but otherwise was a great true PF type. I was surprised he fell so far after getting some showcase time.

But he still wasn't "the man" on his elite team, Blair is. Again I say Kevin Love, as in ranked lower but just kept climbing the charts with every game. I think a few more games like G'town and Blair goes right past the Pacers spot and on up. Aminu, Clark, Mullens all ahead of Blair? I don't buy it.

Griffin, Harden, Jennings sure. Depending on the rest of the season Thabeet might fall behind Blair. Teague and Monroe maybe. I mean we might be talking the 6-7th pick with the Pacers going 9 I'd guess.

Hill could still be up there ahead of him I guess. Depending on PG need Tyreke Evans is making a push.

But I've got to laugh when I see RealGM with Blair in the 2nd freaking round. Yeah, because that's where true PF putting up solid numbers go. I can't believe I had to tear him down a bit and yet I turn around and see a ranking this low. No way would I count on him making it past 30 teams, nor would I expect the Pacers to take Aminu over Blair as RealGM does.

Of course even worse is Ford's draft machine that still has Rubio in it even though he's already said he won't enter the draft this year. And he's got Monroe as a top 3 prospect still? Since when, Nov 2008?

Also I'm betting Jrue waits for Collison to leave so he can run UCLA himself next year and push his stock higher. He hasn't had the chance to make good on his talent thanks to Mr. Ballhog and I'd bet he could play his way to top 3 next year if he just stays.

Goes well with either hand to the hole. Explosive at the rim in a forcefull manner (ie, in NBA traffic). Has the jumper to hold teams honest, even from deep. Tends to get involved in every play even away from the ball.

Some guys get their numbers called a lot, but Henderson was more like Westbrook early on. He refused to be left out of plays and found ways to make an impact away from the ball, often resulting in getting to the ball and making a play. Now Duke is running it through him quite a bit.

He wasn't on my radar, I was watching Singler, but Henderson has had many games where he just won't be ignored. That impresses me. Enough that I'd draft him despite just drafting Rush.

Yeah, I'd left Tyreke out before but caught it in that last post. I just watched some of their game the other day and he's pretty solid still. He's been effective each time I caught him in action.

But to be honest I'm hoping teams are going to forget about Jennings in favor of some of these other guys and let him slip to the Pacers. The dude is a freak for passing the ball, one of the nicest pure PG prospects we've seen in awhile. Not the scoring/passer that Rose is, but we don't need that. This team needs someone that can get everyone else involved and on their toes.
