Default Indianapolis at San Diego - Sunday Night Football - 11/23/08

(6-4) After winning 3 straight, the Colts hope to go further in securing a wild card berth with a win tonight against a San Diego team that eliminated them from the playoffs last year and given them plenty of trouble.

(4-6) This season has been a struggle for San Diego. The Chargers have lost a handful of nail-biter games. The season is fading quick for San Diego and no doubt they are desperate for a win.

    Time: 8:15 PM

Location: Qualcomm Stadium, San Diego, CA

    Television:
    Super Bowl XLI Champions
    2000 Eastern Conference Champions

It's time to drop back and punt on Bob Sanders after this season. If there's one thing that is clear, it's that he cannot play and practice for anything close to a season. The greatest player in the world can't help you if he's not on the field....

It gets old watching kickers stick long FGs on us like it's routine.

Peyton has 1:26 and a timeout to get Vinny into FG range. This is what they are built for now go out and do it.

Dungy is brilliant. What a call on 4th and inches. Mr. Clutch hits a 51 yarder to win it.

Lots of credit to go around there. Dungy and Manning for a ballsy call on 4th and inches, Marvin for pulling in a tough pass, and Adam for nailing the 51-yarder to atone for last season.

Yeah it was right down the middle and cleared the bar by a mile. That thing would have been good from 60 easy.

Not to mention that we have tie-breakers on two teams we are currently tied with, Baltimore and New England.

I'm glad they got it on that last 4th down call because there should be a lot of questions about the previous drive and call on 3rd and inches.

Without a doubt, the play of the game was Mathis' sack and forced fumble on Rivers after SD had driven down to to red zone. Without that play happening when it did, Vinny never gets his chance to add to his legend.

Well played game all around. Offensive line needs to continue to work and play better, but Manning looked sharp for the most part, and I really like Gonzalez. I say Bob should stay out the next 3 weeks and make sure he's healthy for the playoffs.
Don't ask Marvin Harrison what he did during the bye week. "Batman never told where the Bat Cave is," he explained.

I swear to god my dad called that play ten seconds before the snap. He was like "seems like a good time for a turnover, sack and a fumble?" He thought it would be freeney but it was freaky how that came true, I had come in late and thought maybe they put it on tape delay or something but it was live.

Another week, another flip-of-the-coin close game, another win.

Make no mistake, Manning et. al. is doing a great job getting you in position to win, but 51-yard field goals are a stretch for anyone (AV now 10-for-21 on his career from 50+) and consistent good fortune seems to be on your side this year.

The Colts should go to Vegas. They'd be at the blackjack table taking a hit on 14 and the dealer would be giving them a 7 every time.

I'll take good fortune any day. I don't think it's important how the Colts win right now. Peyton's still rounding into form and the team is still hurting from injuries. All that's important from now until the end of the season is that the Colts make the playoffs.

Winning handily throughout the regular season doesn't mean you'll win the Super Bowl, nor does having the best record in the league. If we've learned anything from the past few seasons, it's that the teams that peak just as the playoffs begin are the teams that usually end up winning it all. Colts fans know that all too well. Patriots fans know a little bit about that too...

I certainly wouldn't call knee surgery on your best player and insane amounts of injuries to the team "good fortune". What we have is good coaching and resiliency

I was mainly referring to all of the 3-point or 4-point games won (5 or 6 now?), often when the other team had the game in hand (1st Houston game) or had a sizeable statistical edge (Pittsburgh).

on last night's ending: 21 attempts is a pretty good sample size. AV has had 21 attempts of 50-55 yards in his career and made 10 of them- a coin flip-- to have overtime or win outright. It was a great kick by a great kicker. Certainly he is clutch and doesn't feel the nerves. He has never been known as a distance kicker, though. In fact one reason for NE not to match his free agency offer was his history of very short kickoffs. It was a 50-50 proposition and it worked out for you. The odds were similar to (though a little less) than the odds of Shaq making one free throw to win a game.

Peyton and Dungy have been great. On a case-by-case basis each of the close wins is not that odd, each was deserved, but it just seems somewhat fortunate that just about every game that has hung in the balance has turned your way, sometimes with odd cirumstances or where it was clear that the last team to have the ball would win.

And the back judge (or umpire) for setting one hell of a block on the Chargers' CB so that Marvin was so wide-open. Marvin set him up perfectly. If John Madden weren't blind and dumb (and terrible), that would have made a great replay.

(And while it probably would not have changed the outcome, Chargers fans have had a tough year with the officials. Those two third-down pass interference calls were, at the very best, iffy because the ball wasn't catchable.)
Why do the things that we treasure most, slip away in time
Till to the music we grow deaf, to God's beauty blind
Why do the things that connect us slowly pull us apart?
Till we fall away in our own darkness, a stranger to our own hearts
And life itself, rushing over me
Life itself, the wind in black elms,
Life itself in your heart and in your eyes, I can't make it without you

Drove down to the game from LA. Our seats were 11 rows up at the 15 yard line. The tailgaiting at Qualcomm is pretty impressive. Did manage to find a few patches of Colts fans which resulted in bratwurst and shotgunned beers for us. We picked a great game to attend, and after 28-24 and 23-21, I was ready for this one. It's wonderful to watch the home team fans have to slink out of their own stadium while you're still high-fiving.

In any given year, my top three teams I want to beat are New England, Pittsburgh, and San Diego. By that measure, we've had a great season. Let's maul these next three opponents, and put ourselves in great position for the playoffs.

    Great win.

I'm starting to think this team can go to the Super Bowl.

    Anyone heard anything on Jeff?
