Post Star: Granger remembers New Mexico

    http://www.indystar.com/article/2008.../1062/SPORTS04

Indiana Pacers swingman Danny Granger is giving back to New Mexico.

Granger, who went to the University of New Mexico, is sponsoring an AAU basketball team, the Granger Hurricanes, in Albuquerque.

"They asked me in the summer time if I would be interested and told them yeah," said Granger, who donated $40,000 toward the program. "I had wanted to do it before and now I'm getting a chance to do it. I'll get to coach in the summer some time, and that's right up my alley."

Granger said the name Hurricanes comes from his hometown of New Orleans and that there will probably be three age groups in the AAU program.

Granger's sponsorship comes just months after he donated $500,000 to the University of New Mexico for its renovation of its arena, "The Pit." The donations will be done in five annual $100,000 increments. The university plans to name the locker room after Granger.

    Coming along slowly

Pacers point guard Travis Diener can't pinpoint a date on which he could play without pain in his left foot.

Diener, who is being limited to 12 minutes a game, said he's fighting through the ongoing pain that caused him to miss the preseason.

Diener, who has played in every game since his return, said the toughest challenge he faces is his explosiveness.

    "It's a day-by-day, game-by-game thing," Diener said.

    Getting to the rotation

Center Rasho Nesterovic, who missed the previous four games with an ankle sprain, should return to the lineup this week.

Pacers coach Jim O'Brien will have to decide on the kind of rotation he wants to use when Nesterovic returns. O'Brien has been using nine players.

    "I don't know if I'll go to a 10-man rotation," O'Brien said. "It'll probably stay nine man."

Jeff Foster has started alongside T.J. Ford, Granger, Marquis Daniels and Troy Murphy in Nesterovic's place.

Diener, Jarrett Jack and rookies Brandon Rush and Roy Hibbert have rounded out the rotation.
    McRoberts plays

Former Carmel High School standout Josh McRoberts got his first action as a Pacer. Starting in place of the sick Murphy in the second half, McRoberts brought some life to the defense with several deflections in 10 minutes.

Little-used Maceo Baston also provided some energy in his eight minutes.

"He was active with his hands," O'Brien said about McRoberts. "He gave us a lot of energy."
    The Granger Hurricanes? Seriously?

This bothers me. With the amount of energy that we have been playing with every night, does JOB honestly think keeping a short rotation is going to be beneficial? Everyone will be worn out by the All-Star break if this is what he's going to do.

Nine man rotation is not that uncommon.

    It's the norm really.

Besides we're the Pacers the last thing you need to worry about is whether someone will get playing time.

Our 15th man Always starts for us at some point in the year.

For teams that have the talent to make up for it.

So far, we've been playing above our talent level because we play with a lot of energy. If you only use a 9 man rotation, eventually you're going to lose that.

Also, I dont understand the "Well eventually our 15th man plays anyways" argument. That's my whole point. If you go deeper into your bench, maybe guys won't get injured and you won't have to play your 15th man. Just my .02

I think its more like the Pacers don't have the option of "resting" for the playoffs. More like they're gonna have to go balls-to-the-wall to even reach the playoffs. Of course they might be too tired to do anything once they get there, but then that's par for the course.

Really as long as the two rooks are included in the rotation, and the rotation isn't 9 every single game I don't have any complaints.

Even though position-wise it doesn't make sense, Diener.

Roy will get less time, but he'll still play.

While I can't say I like running a 9-man rotation, I supposed the point, like Sparko said, is that the Pacers really have to play their best game every night to get to the playoffs. But, I would agree that a little extra rest for guys would be benficial. My question is, when Dunleavy comes back in, who gets left out?

Also, that story on Granger is great. It shows that the organization is headed in the right direction. It's nice that our publicity is either, "this team is capable of beating anyone on any given night," or, "this team's best player is also a good guy." No more JailPacers!!!!

And can I just say, when we drafted Granger, the excitement for his talent and character was extremely well merited. So many people went crazy over him and set expectations so high, and for once, Pacer fans, we really got one right! This organization, and the NBA as a whole needs more Danny Grangers.

Actually I'd like to change my earlier statement...

I'm positive our 15th man will not be starting nor playing for us this year!

    Good point!

Unless of course, a deal is done and that person becomes the new 15th man. Then it's possible.

But, the current 15th man will most certainly not!
