The Portland Trail Blazers, as you may have heard, kind of have a problem with healthy bigs. Greg Oden, still out. Joel Przybilla, still out. Jeff Pendergraph, now out for the year. Basically, if Iím Marcus Camby, Iím investing in tape. Lots and lots of tape. And the Blazers, apparently, are investing in a new big man.

    Marc Stein reports:

Sources told ESPN.com that Oberto ó who has turned down several offers from Europe in recent weeks because he was determined to keep playing in the NBA ó is joining the Blazers on a one-year deal to fortify their depth as Greg Oden and Joel Przybilla continue to recover from the serious knee injuries they suffered last season.

Oberto is a body. Thatís pretty much it. Heís 35 years old, has never been exceptional at any one element, and has health issues himself (because, you know, heís 35). But heís a veteran that should be able to provide help while the Blazers get healthy with their younger guys. Marcus Camby should benefit from having Oberto do help do the dirty work, as should LaMarcus Aldridge. Just donít expect wonders. This is a stop gap.

As Ben Golliver notes, this probably means the Blazers will release Jeff Pendergraph. Which is just kind of cruel, but necessary.

he did quite well as the spurs center but never really had a big role with wizards

what beast23 pointed out, we couldve gotten rid of solomon jones but i guess the trail blazers didnt think of him. oberto is better anyway

It doesn't take much of a player to be better than Solomon Jones.

They weren't thinking. Or maybe they thought he would bring some defense and shot blocking.k

They were thinking we needed athleticism badly. Which was true. Too bad that's all he's got.

The better question is who will last longer before getting hurt....Oberto or Oden?

He uses it to get weakside shot-blocks and little else.

Anyway, the Blazers were clearly looking for someone different, as Oberto is one of the least athletic players in the NBA. He was never particularly athletic for NBA standards, but age and injuries have finished him. Can barely get off the floor any more. He's still a very intelligent player who does the little things and a great passer though, so he can still be a quality 5th big in limited minutes.

Then again, the Blazers ressurected Juwan Howard's career (and physical condition) last season, so maybe Oberto can start playing like it's 2007 again.
