Why does everybody have the Cavs in third place? I think they stink. They are a Lebron James injury away from challenging the Knicks for worst team. You cannot have that much weight on a single player and expect him to produce every year. He has played year-round basketball.

Well we came to the same end and I thought I was being bold picking the Hornets, but I guess not.

I hate the Wizards this year and I picked the Bobcats to ALMOST make the playoffs under Larry Brown.

I see the kids in Portland getting to the second round as will Phillie.

I think the Pacers will win the games they should and not beat any of the really good teams, kind of like last year, but get a 7th seed by being 42-40. Problem is who knows how long Dunleavy is out, but Im happy B Rush will get some extra minutes under his belt.

I think the Raptors are not Deep enough and JO is made of glass. Calderon was as good as he was going to be last year, so I'm not high on them and yes I blame JO.

I have the 76ers in a first round upset over Detroit. I think Joe D missed his chance to remake the team and they'll not be able to match Phillies young athleticism.

I like the Heat with a healthy Wade who should take a run at MVP, but his team won't be good enough and Jamaal Tinsley won't pass him the ball enough (pretending here).

Otherwise, I think it would be a great final to see Chris Paul and Lebron on the biggest stage. We'll see.

What!? No way we get less than 30 wins this season. This team has enough talent (maybe not proven talent) to make it within the top 10 teams in the east.

Could you explain to me how you came to the conclusion that this team is only capable of 26 wins?

I could see the Pacers get less than 30 wins, but not with this group we have now.

I don't care about the order, but the top seven teams are Detroit, Boston, Cleveland, Orlando, Miami, Philly and Washington. The #8 seed will be the Bobcats.

#9 Atlanta - not really worse, but Miami gets healthy and gets their act together and bumps them.
#10 Toronto - JO continues to battle injuries. Either that or this is a top-four team.
#11 Chicago - too much talent and they eventually figure it out or trade marketable assets for a better overall team.
#12 New York - Donnie and Mike are leading them back to Donnie's eternal goal of playing 0.500 basketball.
#13 Indiana - by midseason, the team will be in full rebuilding/ youth mode, which also brings back the forgotten "too smart to waste thier time/ money supporting the current team" fans.
#14 Milwaukee - even with Skiles, they can't overcome their talent deficit.
    #15 New Jersey. Ick.

    West:
I don't care. But I think San Antonio is due for a breakout season.

I think I did this in another thread, I'm not doing the West because really I don't hardly follow the West at all.

    DC's Eastern Conference Preview

    The Beasts of the East

    1.) Boston Celtics

    2.) Cleveland Cavaliers

    3.) Detroit Pistons

    Best of the Rest

    4.) Philadelphia 76ers

    5.) Orlando Magic

    6.) Indiana Pacers

    7.) Toronto Raptors

    8.) Washington Wizards

May have a Future in the playoffs, but not this year

    9.) Atlanta Hawks

    10.) Miami Heat

    11.) Chicago Bulls

Unless there are roster changes, there will be suffering

    12.) Milwaukee Bucks

    13.) Charlotte Bobcats

    14.) New York Knicks

    15.) New Jersey Nets

    Playoffs

    1.) BOSTON over 8.) Washington 4-1
    4.) PHILADELPHIA over 5.) Orlando 4-2

    2.) CLEVELAND over 7.) Toronto 4-1
    3.) DETROIT over 6.) Indiana 4-2

    1.) BOSTON over 4.) Philadelphia 4-2
    2.) CLEVELAND over 3.) Detroit 4-1

    1.) BOSTON over 2.) Cleveland 4-3

I don't see any huge Playoff upsets this year.

With Larry Brown? Yes. This is what he is born to do.

As much as I despise him from "the season we do not discuss", I'd welcome him back for a two-year contract begining in the 2010-11 season.

Larry Brown has shown (at least in his past couple of stops) that he can't win if he doesn't have a roster built for the playoffs. He *****ed nonstop about his players in New York (after repeatedly insisting throughout the season that it was his "dream job") and he will do the same in Charlotte, especially after his best player, Gerald Wallace, goes down to injury halfway through the season. He'll insist on numerous unrealistic trades (that he won't get) until the end of the year, and the Cats are going to win 25 games or fewer.

I actually like most of the players on the team, but I'll be happy to watch "Next Town" Brown fall flat on his face.

Man, I can't believe how hard people are sleeping on Philly and Washington. How many years in a row do Caron and Jamison have to show off the skills?

    Sorry-

I missed the transaction where we got LeBron James for Troy Murphy

I will always be a Jamaal fan. I like Jamaal more than I like the Pacers, to be perfectly honest... in much the same way I liked Reggie more than the Pacers. Wherever he ends up I will probably follow more closely than the Pacers, assuming he ends up somewhere I can stomach to cheer for... I wish there were someway he could be traded to the Thunder, 76ers, Warriors, or Wizards.

I accept that he's been injury prone, and that he has had certain problems getting along with his coaches at points in his career, but I do not really blame him for his off court actions the way most do. I think he has been in the wrong place at the wrong time at times. He's never been convicted of even a misdemeanor, let alone a felony to my knowledge, and I believe in innocent until proven guilty.

He is a guy that has helped his entire family get out of the ghetto by playing basketball and staying clean. I think that is a very compelling, and very noble thing. Every year he does the coat drive in Indianapolis helping the less fortunate stay warm - we don't hear about that though, we hear about crazies chasing and shooting at him while depicting him as the villain of the story.

Truth be told I think more highly of Jamaal than I do a lot of the people of Indianapolis when it comes down to it. Read some of the comments here: http://www.topix.com/forum/indy/TQUMVVK363HA3I1M3

"How about telling us who the owner is so that we can buy some target shooting lessons for him and the next time he can solve a major problem of the Pacers. " Just one of the countless demeaning, inhumane, and racist comments to come out of residents of your city. You can read many more there, it's fairly shocking how hateful people can be over a basketball player. I think Indianapolis could be a lot better served in cleaning up their obvious crime and hate issues, than worrying about Jamaal.

I will become Iowa State alumni in May, so it doesn't hurt that he led us to back to back big 12 championships, as well as led us into being the only team in history to beat Kansas (suck it Kansas!) 4 consecutive times.

This thread is a bit premature, we still have nine days to go before the season starts, and some teams are a major injury to their star player away from making the playoffs.

    Some observations though.

I still hate posters using icons for teams. I didn't read those posts.

New York and the Pacers are going to surprise a lot of people.

Portland doesn't have the right mix. They won't be as good as people think unless they trade some of those young guys for vets that know how to win.

James has nothing to do with this. That doesn't make any sense. I don't understand!?

Well, here is my take on this topic:

Non-playoff teams - East (in no particular order):
Charlotte, Milwaukee, New York, Miami, New Jersey, Atlanta and Chicago

Non-playoff teams - West (in no particular order):
Memphis, Minnesota, Oklahoma City, Sacramento, Dallas, Denver and Golden State

After 1st round of play offs will be eliminated - East:
    Indiana, Washington, Orlando and Detroit

After 1st round of play offs will be eliminated - West:
Phoenix, San Antonio, Portland and L.A. Clippers

After 2nd round of play offs will be eliminated - East:
    Toronto and Cleveland

After 2nd round of play offs will be eliminated - West:
    Utah and L.A. Lakers

After East Conference finals will be eliminated:
    Philadelphia

After West Conference finals will be eliminated:
    New Orleans

    NBA finals:
    East: Boston
    West: Houston

    Final Prediction: Houston wins 4-2

It is clear that any major injury for the core Houston players (I'd say basically for their starting lineup) during playoffs will inevitably destroy this prediction - but hey, essentially you just have to be healthy enough in order to compete and contend for the title.

“People talk about how quiet he [McKey] is, but he’s really been helpful. He gives a lot of insight to players in how to guard certain teams and what their weaknesses are. The whole team listens to him, and it makes my job a lot easier. Having players like him is what pro basketball is all about for me.” —Larry Brown
