Default What are playing times and team rotation going to be?

We only have two preseason games left before the real season begins, so I guess it's about time to discuss on upcoming team rotation and playing time issues. Here, I have two things in my mind concerning these issues.

Firstly, how deep rotation are we going to have this season (well, at least early on the season)? Coach O'Brien has said he isn't sure about that yet.

I think we could normally use a following 10-man rotation in a game because of relative depth in our roster.

    PG Ford/Jack
    SG Dunleavy/Daniels
    SF Granger/Rush
    PF Murphy/Foster
    C Nesterovic/Hibbert

I would dare to say eight of those players above - projected starters Ford, Dunleavy, Granger, Murphy and Nesterovic along with main back ups Jack, Daniels and Foster - should be guaranteed for serious playing time. Also, both of our rookies, Rush and Hibbert, could be in the mix for continuous playing time even from the very start of the season.

Would you prefer tighter or looser rotation?

Anybody calling for full 12-man rotation? In this case, who are those last two men in active playing roster (assuming those 10 man mentioned above for getting playing time is something we can all agree with)?

In my mind, last two roster spots could be reserved for Graham and Croshere. In case Croshere wouldn't be signed, then either McRoberts or Baston should take his spot.

This scenario leaves Diener and McRoberts/Baston or both of them, inactive (barring any injuries, of course).

I expect Davis and Tinsley soon throwed out of the team. Financially cutting McRoberts would certainly make more sense than cutting Baston.

Well, as we all know, case Tinsley is not solved yet totally, and it may even bring us some other players into consideration for playing time. But this is not point in this post.

Secondly, I want to suggest estimate playing times (all minutes below) for our squad for a typical game.

Depending of the game, these estimates may fluctuate a lot, but here is my projection anyway.

    PG Ford 31"
    SG Dunleavy 34"
    SF Granger 36"
    PF Murphy 32"
    C Nesterovic 27"
    Foster 21"
    Daniels 19"
    Jack 18"
    Hibbert 12"
    Rush 10"
    Graham DNP-CD
    Croshere DNP-CD
    Diener - inactive
    McRoberts - inactive
    Baston - inactive

Since our roster is not locked for the start of the season until next week, we have now proper time to speculate the issues of this post.

    My guess:

(Is it still 3 inactives at a time? For some reason I thought that dropped to 2 or 1??)

    Ford 30" / Jack 18"
    Dunleavy 34"
    Granger 34"
-------------> Matchups will determine who backs them up. But generally speaking, Rush 14" and Daniels 14". Subtract minutes from one or both of them and give them to Jack if it's beneficial to have a smaller defender at SG. In which case, those PG minutes go to Diener.
    Murphy 30" / Foster 18"
    Nesterovic 30" / Hibber 18"

Graham or Croshere or McRoberts as 12th man depending on matchups.

Inactives (if it's still 3) Tinsley and two of Graham, Croshere, and McRoberts.

    TJ 30
    JJ 22
    Dun 32
    Marquis 20
    DG 32
    BRush 18
    Murphy 28
    Foster 20
    Nesto 20
    Hibbert 18

This means Granger plays 10 minutes a game a PF to balance out the rotations.

Otherwise, I want the rookies to play at least 18 minutes a game, win or lose. Two 9 minutes stints each half. I think this is maybe one of the most important things that has to happen, but probably won't.

I think Daniels plays a lot more and Rush and Rasho less.

I don't see it. Hibbert can't go too long before getting winded yet, and if you want your starters to see starters minutes and Rush to get his fair share, that's only going to leave that much for Marquis.

After going though these Preseason games, I still stick to my prior prediction:

    Starter :

    PG - Ford ( 30 mpg )
    SG - Dunleavy ( 36 mpg )
    SF - Granger ( 36 mpg )
    PF - Murphy ( 30 mpg )
    C - Rasho ( 26 mpg )

Bench ( in this order )

    Jack ( 26 mpg )
    Foster ( 26 mpg )

    End-of-the-Bench

PF/C rotation of Hibbert / Croshere or McRoberts / Baston will split the remaining 18 mpg
Guard/SF rotaiton of Marquis / Rush / Graham / Diener will split the remaining 18 mpg

At least until the ASB, I think that the bulk of the remaining 36 mpg will go to Hibbert and Marquis.

I'm only sure with Dun's and Danny's PT. I can't say about anyone else yet.

Honestly, I am anxious to see what happens.

I think JOB should go with a 10-Man rotation to start the season and then consider narrowing it down as players begin to prove themselves more. I'd go with a rotation as follows:

    Pos - Starters/Reserve//Depth

    PG - Ford/Jack//Diener
    PF - Murphy/McRoberts//Baston
    C - Rasho/Foster//Hibbert
    SF - Dunleavy/Daniels//Graham
    SG - Granger/Rush//Daniels

With the type of offense and running system that O'Brien runs I have always advocated a 10 plus man rotation. In fact if all 12 got in a few min. a game I don't think it would be bad.

Keeping legs fresh over an 82 game season is important, IMO.

I feel that Dun will get less minutes so that he can sustain production. I can see Daniels getting more PT due to health and need.

    PG:
    Ford- 30 Jack: 15 Diener:3
    SG:
    Dunleavy-26 Daniels:17 Jack:5
    SF:
    Granger-34 Rush-8 Dunleavy-6
    PF:
    Murphy-28 Foster-20
    C:
    Rasho-28 Hibbert 16 Foster 4

The more the season progresses I can see Dun getting more minutes and Daniels getting injured. Rush then would play more. Rasho minutes may simply stay the same, unless Hibbert's defense continues to progress. I can see TJ's number a little lower and Diener's minutes increase for relief. I say we treat TJ like a baseball manager treats a catcher. Cut his minutes on back-to-backs.

Foster and/or Murphy will most likely will go down for a stint so the last spot would go to Croshere/Baston/McBob.
