Default Kstat, how does it feel to win the championship

You were so young when the "Bad Boys" won it, this is your first championship, tell us what it is like. I certainly cannot relate.

Did you go to the parade, were you up all Tuesday night, what did you do when they won

    I want a full report.

When the Pacers win I don't know what I'll do I really don't.

When the Pacers win I don't know what I'll do I really don't.
When we win next year, I plan on screaming up and down. A lot.
Don't ask Marvin Harrison what he did during the bye week. "Batman never told where the Bat Cave is," he explained.

Well, I really do remember the first 2 titles, but as you said, the magnitude of it didnt hit me. After 14 years of heartbreak, I understand now.

-The night of game 5 was a different feeling of nervousness. I think most of my friends had to tackle me because I was pacing back and forth the entire game, despite the fact we led most of the game. We were up 20 in the 3rd qtr, and I STILL wasnt relaxed. I think Ben's 2nd tip-dunk of the game FINALLY got me to smile for the first time all day, and I could finally admit to myself that this one was wrapped up.

Man, what a feeling. It wasnt as fufilling as the first two, but it tasted WAY sweeter. I was screaming my *** off and laughing maniacally. That was a high like no other.

The streets outside were flooded with people. Just flooded. Very few cars could make it anywhere, just a huge mass of people in celebration. And guess what? WE DIDNT BURN ANYTHING OR RIOT. God, like thats some big news story or something. In fact, it was the LEAST violent championship celebration in like 15 YEARS. Of course, that wont stop certain outlets from accusing us of burning ****.....

Thankfully I had to work VERY early the next day, so after all the postgame celebrations, I got some sleep.

A very little-known part of winning a title is picking up the newspapaer the next day. Championship editions are ALWAYS collectors' items. I managed to find a place that still had TWO nespapers left, and it was only 8:30am. As soon as Im done reading those, I'm posting one on my wall and preserving the other one in plastic.

The cover of the Free Press: R-E-S-P-E-C-T What a sweet title.

The free press also released a mini-eidition that had included the front pages following each of the Pistons final 6 games. I got that too.

By 9am there were no newspapers left in southeast michigan.

Wednesday, I spent my ENTIRE day at work humming "we are the champions to myself." Believe it or not, it DOESN'T get old. I also must have re-read the title "Detroit Pistons 2004 NBA champions" on my nespaper for a solid half hour. That didn't get only either.

I tried DESPERATELY after work (2pm) to pick up some championship gear, the 5th store i tried had ONE shirt left, and no hats.

Today was the parade. Oh yes, the parade. EVeryone expected to be soaked, because overnight forcast was a %95 chance of rain. Well guess what: it rained north, south, east and west of detroit, but the city itself was NOT rained on. Quite literally, a weather miracle.

The downtown parade started at 9am, lasted for 6 hours. Thats when it all sinks in, and I FINALLY started to relax and enjoy the moment. there were approx. 1.2MILLION people at the parade, and no, I wasnt one of them. I went to a last event.

Some highlights from the morning parade-

-Rasheed Wallace decked out in a #9 Gordie Howe Red Wings Jersey. Man, that kid loves his hockey. Really made a lot of people smile.

-Ben Wallace got introduced as "the captain," which is easy to forget. He's definately the most beloved athlete in the city after steve yzerman. He got to hold the championship trophy ALL DAY. Lucky *******.....

-Larry Brown had his Ivan Rodriguez Tigers jersey again. Big baseball fan, that guy.

-Mr. D (Bill Davidson) REALLY dished out some crow at the podium in Hart Plaza:

There has been a lot of ******** going on here. First of all, the Lakers were 8-1 favorites. ********. 8-1? They were lucky to win ONE game! Another thing has been that we dont know how to celebrate. Once again, ********!"
The old man got a standing ovation.

-Prince was introduced as "the guy Kobe would like to never see again." his quote:

I'd like to thank my tamates, my family, the fans, but most of all, I'd like to thank the 22 teams that could have drafted my but DIDN'T!
-the crowd was doing a "sheeeeed" chant half the time. So was I, and I was sitting in front of my TV.

Now, there was a SECOND rally at the palace later that afternoon. The doors opened at 3pm, and it was FULL an hour later. They re-showed the end of game 5 while we waited for the players to get there from downtown. It was UNBELIEVABLY loud in there. It was like nobody had left from game 5 2 nights before.

EVERY player got up and spoke to the crowd. Rasheed had us going. If that was a guy on his way out, he did a REALLY good acting job. Nobody embraced the crowd more than him.

-LB changed into a Detroit Lions jersey. Man, I hope his fortune wears off.

-Lindsey Hunter thanked Joe D for trading him THREE times but bringing him back of all the bench players, his ring means the most to me because I was in the building when we drafted him 11 years ago. I hope he ends his career here.

-Elden Campell was in tears. Most emotion I've ever seen out of him in 14 years. I feel bad for him because EVERYONE knows he wont be a Pistons after the expansion draft. But Its something that has to be done.

-To paraphrase, Rip all but threatened to KILL Larry Brown if he even THOUGHT about leaving.

-Ben Wallace had the gong going off in the background. Man, whata sweet sound.

-George David (the guy in charge of managing cap room) had a seat RIGHT NEXT to sheed. Coincidence? I think not .

How do I feel now? Well, I'm always used to thinking of ways to get to the top. Its like I have to stop myself sometimes and realize that we ARE at the top. I'm not thinking of the draft, free agency, trades, nothing. We ARE the top dogs now, and everyone else has to catch up to us. Not trying to rub it in, but thats just the feeling. There's nobody left for us to catch.

Whats it like being in the championship city? Picture every media outlet in Indianapolis covering the pacers ALL DAY. On TV, when the local news isnt %80 about the Indiana Pacers, its Pacers specials. The Newspaper not only has pacers on the front page, the but Pacers have their own SECTION in the paper. Everyone, from the upper-class CEOs, to the middle-class mailman is wearing either a Ben Wallace Jersey or a fake Afro. Its so crazy, if you dont have a pistons shirt or hat, you BETTER get one Thats what its been the last 3 days.

Finally, its a feeling of relaxation like no other. Thats the reward, as a fan. No worries about how were going to get over the hump, no worries about draft day, basically life is just one big party the entire summer. We're the champs, and its going to be 10 months till anyone can do anything about it

Untill then, I'll be logging on to the aptly-RENAMED, "WORLD CHAMPION Detroit Pistons forum." Wow.

Thats about all I can say.

Only 20 days till the release of the 2004 Pistons DVD!

With any luck, Indy will have TWO parades next year (Pacers & Colts).

Btw, has any city ever won an NFL and NBA championship in the same season? I'd love to be the first.

Congrats on the title KStat; your a good fan and deserve it and I was happy to see LB get a ring. As for the parade I'm guessing our next one in Philly will be sometime around the year 2056.

I don't think so though the Steelers won the Super Bowl and the Pirates won the World Series the same year (79, I believe).

BTW, Ben Wallace with the trophy all day was like Linus and his blanket it was just clear that Ben should have the trophy, as much as Rasheed is responsible for the Pistons getting over the hump Ben is ultimately the reason the Pistons are anywhere. (Only one man kept Shaq to career finals lows and without Ben being able to contain Shaq solo, the Pistons lose w/o a doubt).

I think the Knicks, Jets and Mets all did it the same year - I think!

BTW . . . I am very happy for you Kstat. You are the reason I was pulling for the Pistons . . . well, you and absolutely hating the Lakers.

Detroit had the Tigers, Lions, Red Wings and Joe Louis as Champions in the same year I think. No NBA at the time though.

Yeah - 1969-70, depending on how you slice the years up.

Jan 12, 1969 - Jets win Super Bowl
October, 1969 - Mets win series
May, 1970 - Knicks win NBA title

Probably more accurate to say the Mets & Knicks did.

Too bad I was too young to enjoy all that (though I hate the Jets)

The Giants won the Super Bowl in Jan 1987 after the Mets won the series (Thank you Bill Buckner!) in Oct 1986.

Geez UB, I don't remember Kstat hitting any jumpers in that game. I didn't know he was on the court.

Nice post, Kstat, back to your non-homer ways. Very good read.

This year I'm inclined to believe that, yes. That defense was the best I've ever seen.
