I'm looking for the best digital camera that I can find for the price range 500 -800 dollars...I know there are quite a few camera buffs here, any suggestions?

There's a thread here somewhere you might do a search for. Lots of camera information in it. It wouldn't hurt it to get bumped just so it could get updated.

I can't locate that thread, so I'll ask questions here...

    I've been looking at a few makes/models.

I really like the Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT or the newer XTi and the Nikon D40 or D80...

Any reviews out there? Suggestions? Gripes?

I have the XTi and love it. No complaints. I had prime (fixed) lenses so the closest thing I have to a complaint is that the 1.6x multiplier means my 28mm acts like a 44mm, the 50mm acts like an 80mm and my 100mm acts like a 160mm. That's all fine. The complaint is that I can't buy a wide-angle for a reasonable price that is still a wide angle lens after the 1.6x multiplier.

The XTi is a substantial upgrade over the XT. This year's model has a higher megapixel amount but I don't believe has any functionality changes. Once you are at 3400x2800, I don't know the advantage of higher resolution.

Search on "Rebel" - the thread is at least a year old.

Why do the things that connect us slowly pull us apart?
Till we fall away in our own darkness, a stranger to our own hearts
And life itself, rushing over me
Life itself, the wind in black elms,
Life itself in your heart and in your eyes, I can't make it without you

I also have the XTi and would recommend it if you're looking for a DSLR.

I end up using our pocket camera more often, though, for convenience sake (Canon SD1100IS).
