Default How can I learn more about football?

I love and support the Pacers forever but if an Indy team is going to rock in football I should be supporting them! Plus I'm in this college football state so I should be able to hold up a convo.

What should I do to learn more about football? I don't understand the formations and plays at all. When I play Madden I am totally clueless. I learned a lot watching last season but my knowledge is still very sub par.

    What do I dooooo.

    Offense:
    QB - Throws
    RB - Runs
    FB - Blocks/Runs
    WR x2 - Catches
    TE - Blocks/Catches
    T x2 - Blocks outside
    G x2 - Blocks inside
    C - Hikes/Blocks middle

    Defense:
    DE x2 - Rushes outside
    DT x2 - Rushes inside
LB's x3 - plays behind the defensive line and perform various duties
    CB x2 - Defends WR's
S x2 - Makes sure nobody gets behind them

Of course each team plays different strategies. Offense is pretty basic. Defense is pretty complicated. The Colts play what's called a cover-2. Here's an explanation on that.

    Wikipedia explains it well.

The way most people learn is by family growing up or friends so my advice to you is to watch games with a friend who can explain it to you.

Fine a pee-wee league or something and offer to help coach. Not be a head coach but an assistant or something. Find a guy who knows what he is doing and just listen to what he says and watch.

Watch the games and pay very close attention to the announcers.

If you want to know a lot about the NFL and the rosters, not just football in general, then I would play Madden. Play games and do the GM mode thing and you will learn a lot about the teams and players. Sounds crazy but this is how I became so familar with NBA teams/players by playing video game which sounds kinda crazy I know.

Football is a complex game. Most people learn by growing up playing. I can't really say there's any one way that will teach you everything you need to know. You'd be best off just watching, and listening to what people say. Over time, you'll become more knowledgable about the game.

Also, a lot of high schools have open practices these days. This would be an excellent opportunity to go and watch and see how coaches instruct, teach, and run a team.

From explaining how football works to my wife and her sister, I learned first hand how difficult a sport it is to learn.

When they watched the thing that confused them the most is the meaning of "downs" - ie, first down, second down, third down, and fourth down. Once you understand the downs and markings on the field, everything else sort of starts to make sense.

    Wikipedia's explanation is very good:

The team that takes possession of the ball (the offense) has four attempts, called downs, to advance the ball 10 yards towards their opponent's (the defense's) end zone. When the offense gains 10 yards, it gets a first down, which means the team has another set of four downs to gain yet another 10 yards or score with. If the offense fails to gain a first down (10 yards) after 4 downs, the other team gets possession of the ball at the spot of the football.
I'd also add that most teams, if they don't feel like they can gain enough yards to earn another first down, will punt (kick) the ball to the opposition or if they are close enough they'll try to kick a field goal for 3 points.

I hope this isn't too simplistic. I'm not sure what your level of knowlege of the game is so I just explained it as simply as I could.

Larry is not coming back, he didn't have a meeting with Orlando for not reason, yeah he is coming back to the NBA but not to the Pacers, the notion that he is a taking a year off and then come back is absurd.
