It wasn't about being the team everyone loved, it was about beating the teams everyone else loved.
Division Champions 1955, 1956, 1988, 1989, 1990, 2002, 2003, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008
Conference Champions 1955, 1956, 1988, 2005
NBA Champions 1989, 1990, 2004
For anyone interested, Runi is playing on USA network right now. He looks about like he did when he was here. Fernandez looks fantastic. Portland did really well to get him.
I'm still more worried about Spain than Argentina. Of course right now I hope the team's more worried about Argentina.
I wouldn't call our blowout a fluke but I can see a few things Spain could do to make the game a lot closer - even if we play well. I'll talk more about it if that matchup happens but I could see us being a cold shooting performance and coming out a little flat away from losing to them.
Maceo Baston's #1 fan on Pacers Digest!
Did I just catch some NBA on NBC music?
I'm gonna take a huge gamble and say Rudy will be better than Bayless next year. He looks absolutely Manuesque out there.
Why didn't they foul Gasol?
Damn, 5 straight olympic semifinals and not one finals game
They're the Detroit Pistons of FIBA.
Argentina is not looking so hot. The U.S. is looking good but mostly, Argentina is not playing well.
EDIT: No, my bad, it's the US, we're looking pretty awesome.

1st Qtr with the US up 31-4! Argentina looks totally out of sync with about 7 TO's.
31-4???? Is that a typo?
Still, not what I expected to see with Argentina.
I watched a couple minutes on my work computer. US was up by 19.
Now that that's that, let's talk Spain.
The one area I could see them making big strides is in recognizing when the doubleteam is coming on the perimeter and the guards making quick decisions with the ball to take advantage. You can exploit doubles if you execute.
If a double comes I'd take the man left free, move him to the top of the key and have the guards make a quick pass to him. At the same time I'd execute post/baseline screens to free a man up on the inside. You could use baseline screens, screens anywhere along the side of the lane - there are a lot of ways to do this when the rest of the team has a 4-on-3.
When there isn't doubles going on, I would use screens along the baseline and near the lane to free up big men who can shoot. Either of the Gasols can shoot from 15-18 feet and so can Garbajosa and Reyes.
I'd also zone the heck out of us on defense.
Now if our outside shots are falling and we're playing at the top of our game, I don't think Spain can beat us. But doing the above (and above all else, limiting turnovers) would give them a chance to beat us if we aren't shooting well and don't play our best game. But they have to exploit us when we apply ball pressure on the perimeter. If they don't figure out a counter to that, they'll be in for a long night.
At the start of the 2nd the USA is looking ragged and is settling for 3's. Argentina is getting back into the game. USA has committed 5 fouls already.
Score is 37-25 USA.
Good job by Argentina staying in this and keeping it respectable without Ginobli.
37-29 now. The USA is playing terrible. It started with Melo coming into the lineup. They are taking things for granted against Argentinas bench who has clawed back into the game.
Wow - did I just jinx us?
Yep. Prince just got destroyed on the block.
I hear some Los Fabulosos Cadilacs in the background... great song.
Ironically, the song's called "The Matador." I once made a Jamaal/Saras highlight video set to it.
This space for rent.
Wow. Bad foul. That dude's gonna get shot during halftime.
This space for rent.
We have to match the energy in the second half. This is ridiculous. Wade, Bosh, and Kobe have to be on the floor. Our press is not working as their big men sink to the baseline quick. Our rotation is slow against their zone. We are locked in half of the court and struggle to rotate it. And when we do we settle for a 3 instead on look for a better shot.
Scola is giving everyone fits. Bosh looked surprised by his play.
49-40 at half. The USA looked like, whatever, in the 2nd qtr. The shot 33 FG and 20 of them were 3's while only hitting 6!
Argentina is competing and making it a game with a patchwork team due to injuries with a weak bench. The USA has just let down something awfully.
Where did the stiffling "D" go? The played much better with Wade in the game. He's got 2 fouls and only played about 7 minutes. The USA had better wakeup the 2nd half or there is going to be an upset.
I know many posters don't have the opportunity to see the game, and that's why I have been posting with hopes it enlightens others as to what's going on in the game. I'll let someone else do the 2nd half.
