    Default Mark Cuban on Europe

    Good post. Go read it.

    http://www.blogmaverick.com/2008/08/...nba-to-europe/

    One interesting part:

European Soccer has done a phenomenal job of inventing tournaments that drive huge revenues and TV dollars. This would allow the NBA to do the same thing. Take a Christmas break, or do it in the summer , where the top 6 records in the league play the top 6 teams over there , with the revenues from the event being split primarily among the participant teams rather than equally among all NBA teams. Not only would that be a great revenue source for all the teams involved, but it would create a huge economic incentive for the other 24NBA teams and all overseas team to become top tier teams.

Then of course we could create our own World Cup type tournament every 4 years.

ALl of this could open the door to create more NBA owned competition. I'm not saying it would be easy or automatic. Quite a few parties that dont always see eye to eye would have to come to agreement, But the timing for all of that is right and its an amazing opportunity for players, leagues and teams alike.
The part earlier, about why this is a really good thing for NBA teams, was actually more interesting to me. But this is most likely to cause discussion.
Welcome to Pacers Digest! New around here? Here are three tips for making the forum a great place to talk about Pacers basketball.

    • Log in. Even if you want to read instead of post, it's helpful because it lets you:
    • Change your signature options. You can hide all signatures by choosing "Settings" (top right) then "General Settings" (middle left) and unchecking the box "Show Signatures" (in the "Thread Display Options" area).
    • Create an ignore list. I know it may seem unneighborly. But you're here to talk about the Pacers, not argue with someone who's just looking for an argument. Most of the regular users on here make use (at least occasionally) of the "Ignore" feature. Just go to "Settings" -> "Edit Ignore List" and add the names.

    Enjoy your time at PD!

I'm completely against the notion that the revenues go to the 6 teams. That just gives the big markets more incentive to spend whatever they want. Yes, you can surely make the argument that having a big payroll doesn't automatically equal success, but we all know it's easier when you're not hamstrung by the LT.

Also, how would you choose the top 6 teams? Top 3 seeds in each conference, top 6 overall records? Can't do playoff performance since it's not a power of 2. Dallas has 60 wins then they flame out in the first round again, they get to go?

I love the "economic incentive" bit. Everybody's trying to get better. Even in the old days, Donald Sterling wasn't Major League-ing his team, he just treated his team like any other business and was trying to make a profit. It would take a whole lot of dough to make someone like him make the investment needed on the hope of getting to the top 20%.

Besides all that, I don't have a problem with it. Not anything I'm excited about, considering what we've seen in recent exhibitions, but whatever.

[edit] But hey, if this had been around in '04 our 61-win banner would have actually been worth something.

[edit2] Another issue is fatigue. If you have it during the season the top teams will end up playing more games and have more wear-and-tear. If you have it in the off-season you'll have not just individuals worn down by summer competition, but entire franchises, especially when these are the teams that one would presume will be playing far into the playoffs already.

The FIBA World Championships. Spain is the current World Champion. The next one takes place in 2010.

I stand corrected, and feel a little foolish for not bringing that up. I guess my perception was that the FIBA WC's weren't as big as they could be. Maybe I should get satellite TV and pay more attention.

Seriously... Mark Cuban should be the Commissioner of the NBA, not just an owner. He's a man of vision, business savvy as hell, and would definitely come across a lot better in public than the sociopathical Der Stern.

What happens if Josh Childress has a Shaun Livingston like injury? How does his contract work? Is it guarnteed?
