Fellow DC-ties....Old City Cafe in Adams Morgan...is it any good?

I was walking by it yesterday and I saw they had shwarma, which brings back all kinds of Netherlands memories for me since I cooked it for myself all the time when I lived there.
    Already stoked for 2013-2014.

    Indy,

Have you tried Capri? It's a bit north of the Wal Mart on Keystone behind the plaza with the Blockbuster. In fact you have to get there by going through Wal Mart's parking lot. I think their food is good, but they are pretty proud of it. A tad on the expensive side. They hand make their own spaghetti noodles. I've never been there for lunch and don't know if the menu differs or not. They prefer reservations for dinner and they are most definitely NOT kid friendly. We were not aware of that and they were not very kind when we brought our toddler.

Also if you like Chinese, I've always like the place that's across the street from Wal Mart (not in the plaza where Franks nursery used to be).

Yes, that's the one. I couldn't think of the name off the top of my head.

Ever try Papa Roux at 10th & Post? It's really good cajun.
No I haven't. I've seen it many times driving around the neighborhood and wondered. I'll have to stop in and check it out.

Yeah we went there a ton before we went over to China to adopt my first adopted sister. I think my parents were trying to be "cultured". It was ok, but I was like 11 or 12 and the waitresses would always creep on me so I got really turned off about going there.

Another decent Cajun place is Gumbo a Go Go at 86th and Ditch in the Blockbuster/Applebee's anchored center. It's a lot more convenient for me to go there and they have a very good Datwich and also a fantastic Beef Dubris when its being served. If you go there you have to try the voodoo chicken with some Cajun seasoning on top. It's got a lot of kick to it, but it is delcious.

One thing that people don't understand is that chinese food here is americanized. Most of the dishes here taste nothing like they do there, if they even exist at all.

I've eaten there several times. I agree that it's usually pretty good. I've never had your two recomendatiosn though, I'll have to try them out.

BTW in case nobody can tell I LOVE this thread. My wife and I love to eat out and try new places and I love to tell people about them almost as much.

Oh believe me, after being in China I can tell you that we have ZERO idea what is actually "Chinese" food. What is served over here is really just noodles/rice/chicken/beef/pork with some American seasoning or sauce on them.
In China, most things are still moving when you purchase them. I ate in two authentic Chinese restaurants while I was there, and all I can say is wow. Really tough to even begin describing some of the stuff they were serving.

Anyways, yeah my parents realized this pretty quickly, but they became friends with the wait staff so we went there a lot anyway.

From what I remember their buffet was actually pretty solid.

If you're up that way and enjoy Mexican, the Los Tapatios off 86th is quite good. I always get the Fajitas though so I can't speak for the rest of the menu except anyone I've taken there seems to enjoy it.

I'll have to try that place. I usually go to the El Rodeo off of 106th and Michigan when I want some Mexican food.

Is Sahm's up on Allisonville in Fishers still open? And is it as good as it used to be?

Their tenderloins were awesome and for app, you gotta get the carrot curls.

That is assuming its still good. I haven't been there in years.

Sahm's is still open. I think they may have opened another location too. I haven't eaten there in a while, but their coffee cake is pretty good as well.

And while we're discussing places in the 86th and Ditch Rd. area, I have to give a shout out to a place I already mentioned, SAWASDEE. Delicious Thai food. Go there and get the Pad Thai, Glass noodle Pad Thai, or the Drunken noodles and I guarantee you, you will leave a happy customer. Also get the soup and spring roll as your side. Delicious. Different levels of spicyness too. You can get mild for those of you might not be able to handle the heat and their hot and thai hot have a lot of spice and are downright good eatin'. Plus service is great and the owner is an old Thai man who is always on site.

So the Chinese Ruby is good - I've driven by that place probably 500 times but have never gone inisde.

Best mexican food is La Piadad - Broad Ripple - same type of food as El Rodeo - but just better

Is that the one right by the trail just past the Brewpub?

And speaking of The Brewpub, the Beer and Cheese plate is one of my favorite appetizers ever. They make a cheese sauce with one of their beers and give you diffferent types of bread to dip in it. Awesome.

Never been, unfortunately. If you go, let me know how it is.

I'm debating whether I should go to Fogo this saturday with a bunch of friends for 50 bucks. Ugh...I probably won't go because of the following...

I went to the Willard Room for my girlfriend's birthday last week. It went to $200+. I had the filet. Not worth it. In the words of Vincent Vega: "That's a pretty ****ing good milkshake. I don't know if it's worth five dollars but it's pretty ****ing good." Fifty-dollar steak in my case but still, you get the point.

I love to make fun of Indianapolis but St. Elmo's still has the finest steak I've ever had. A lot of service and fancy stuff but at the end of the day even the Willard Room was classic DC - all flash and no substance. Well, some substance - for chrissakes, it was $200, but in general, I feel like I should have gotten a much better meal. And the champagne, an independent "house" brand (which I guess is supposed to be tres boheme) and was $30/glass, was eh at best. I should have just gone with some Mums.

I have yet to find an excellent non-ethnic/traditional place in DC food-wise, which is astounding. There are some good French places and some Italian but do those count?

Btw, I had Five Guys the other day for the first time and loved it. I could hear my arteries clogging but it was damn good.

Yes it is in the little yellow house.

So is Five Guys good - really? looks like it wouldn't be. I'm not a huge hamburger eater - but sometimes it hits the spot. Is it better than Bubs in Carmel

Five Guys is delicious. Bub's is very good too. I could eat either one, but I think Five Guys is cheaper.

Best Italian in Indiana is Puccini's Dolce La Vita in Bloomington. I've never been to Mangia. The Italian chains in Carmel are pretty standard and they aren't outstanding but they don't really mess up either.

Mangia isn't a chain - it doesn't look like much from the outside, but it is rather nice inside.

The place in Greenbriar I was trying to think of is Amalfias - I think the owners brother runs the Capri

Yeah, I was just commenting more on the fact that I hadn't found a real outstanding Italian place yet in Carmel.

There's not one in Indy, but I prefer the variety of ingredients at Fuddruckers, though just the plain, solid burger is an excellent buy at FG and the fries are better.

Yeah, Amalfi's...the same guy/family does Capri and used to do Arturo's.

Best deli in town is ....duh....Shapiro's, either one (downtown or Carmel).

Though I like their Shrimp Cocktail, I don't think St. Elmo's steaks are as good as either Sullivans or Petersons, though it's been years since I've been there.

Best Barbeque in town is Judge's in Haughville, and GT South's is pretty good, too. Try the corn casserole/bread at Judges.

    Donuts...Longs...with Boynton's surprisingly close behind.

Pizza...I'm partial to Firehouse in Fishers, but it's a growing up in the '70's pre-fab delivery crust with the funky slice kinda thing.

Bar food-- Check the avi...Britton has great wings, pretzels, fried mac'n'cheese, and chicken cordon bleu balls....good wraps and sandwiches, too...75 cent Taco Tuesday!!!!

Italian...I like Capri, and there used to be a place in Nora called Il Gargano that was excellent, but I don't know if it's there anymore.

    ....

The bbq chicken sandwich or the Ploughman's Platter That was my favorite place, I probably went there 2 or 3 times a week before I figured out that I had to give up beer.
