Only a handful of PGs can defend Billups period... Especially in the East.
Yeah, that's just not going to happen. Something to live with and work around if possible.

More than a handful can do it better than Ford\Diener combo.
Ford isn't as bad as Diener defensively - and Ford will be making the opposing PG work equally as hard on the other end.

Seriously, why are these threads merged?

There is a significant difference between a story that says the Pacers and Raptors are "talking" about an O'Neal deal and one that says it's "all but done."

They are 2 different threads. Before the yahoo story, everyone is talking about the rumor. After the yahoo story, everyone is talking about the "done deal." No reason they should be merged.

It's very irritating (and a waste of time) to have to go back 5 pages to find the Yahoo story buried in the middle of the thread. I mean, this is the biggest news story for the Pacers in a long long time, and it's buried in the middle of a 20 page thread? Makes no sense to me.

That is something that should be the first post of a new thread so that every user can easily read the story.

Can we please try to avoid using the term "snap" in a thread announcing T.J. Ford becoming a Pacer? Makes me nervous. I think I'm half-kidding. Maybe.

True. Shouldn't T.J. blow by a guy like Billups on that other side of the floor? Hell, who CAN'T T.J. Ford blow by? He's one of the fastest guys in the league, last I heard.

The good news is that Joe D. could ship Chauncey out West this offseason and it won't be a problem anymore.

Then all you have to worry about is Rondo... Ford can definitely handle him.

He's probably a step behind Barbosa and Monta in terms of pure speed, but he has better ballhandling so in a basketball-sense, he's essentially as fast as it gets.

Oh Pig Nash, you and your crystal ball.
Which you agree or disagree with? I just post that whenever someone says EJ's gonna fall. Partly to keep myself from hoping it happens? I don't know whether I'd want him on the Pacers or not. I had mixed feelings about him at IU. He could take over games, but he could suck real bad too.

I merged 3 threads posted within minutes of each other linking to the Yahoo! Story. They fit in here because this was about JO going to Toronto. You'd prefer two threads on the same thing?

If/when this becomes official (and I think it will be), there will be plenty of new threads. For now, it's one because it's all about the story of the trade itself. If/when it's done, things will open up to more focused discussions across the board.

You also could have simply requested that I or one of the others edit Post#1 with the new information. That would have been just fine, too.

    From Doug Smith's blog:

"Neither side is talking, of course, because nothing can be finalized until T.J.'s base-year compensation tag comes off the books on July 1. For that reason, Toronto will make the 17th selection in tonight's draft based on what the Pacers tell them to do."

Was. We don't know if he still has that speed post-injury.

That's kind of what I figured. It'd be nice if ESPN is talking about it tomorrow, to further hammer home that this is happening, so while it will say "Toronto selects" it will be blatantly whomever we want.

Here's the whole post. He seems pretty confident:

Deal's as done as it can be right now

Nothing's official until it's official, he said in his best Yogi Berra imitation, but it sure looks at the moment like the T.J. Ford-Jermaine O'Neal trade is going to go through.

The concerns both Toronto and Indiana had with the health of the principles -- Ford's neck and back and O'Neal's knee -- have apparently been eased and only some major last-minute snag or case of cold feet can scuttle the trade now.

The Raptors will also send the 17th pick in Thursday's draft, Rasho Nesterovic and another bit part to the Pacers in the deal that's been talked about in the media since Monday morning.

Bryan Colangelo had told us he had "four or five" conversations going about Ford but a couple of team sources said he liked the O'Neal deal best because of the impact it will have on the court immediately and on the bottom line a couple of seasons from now.

O'Neal will make $44 million (US) over the next two seasons but will come off the books and give Colangelo a boatload of money to throw at free agents following the 2009-10 season.

Neither side is talking, of course, because nothing can be finalized until T.J.'s base-year compensation tag comes off the books on July 1. For that reason, Toronto will make the 17th selection in tonight's draft based on what the Pacers tell them to do.

You need to get off this injury thing. Ford is fine (and still crazy fast).

We'll see how he pans out in the fall. I just don't see him leading this team - no doubt his teammates will end up carrying him, if anything.

The first part is valid. He'll never be a championship-caliber PG and he'll never be the ideal PG, but he can be a productive starter easily.

The second part... Horrible yet it made me chuckle.

Almost anyone can be a championship-caliber PG with the right team around him. Everyone should have just learned that.

And frankly, we have no business even having this conversation at all right now. The Pacers need to get better, period. You don't go from what we just had, to a team deep in the playoffs over night unless some amazing things happen. Boston is the exception to the rule.

For the record, I have nothing at all against TJ Ford. I actually like him. I'm just concerned about being locked down for another three years with an injury-prone PG.

Hopefully it was just a fluke and he's rehabbed well.
TJ is healthy. There's nothing to worry about. I'm happy Jermaine is coming to Toronto, As soon as I find out what number he is gonna use, I'm heading down the Air Canada Centre and getting my Jersey

And while surrounding a PG with the "right team" is plausible, it's not nearly the same as surrounding a PG with 3 All-Stars who still play at a high level every night... Rondo is not a championship PG, he simply did his job on a championship team.
