T.J. really could end up being the starting PG of the Pacers for quite a while. He fits into the system perfectly - a deadly quick slashing PG who actually can get teammates involved but score plenty. One issue is definitely his propensity to fire up a lot of shots down the stretch - a la Tinsley - without being particularly clutch.

It's a good move for both teams, if it happens. JO and Bosh form an excellent East frontcourt and giving up Ford (thus allowing them to keep Calderon) is no problem for the Raps.

Although it is REALLY weird to imagine JO actually being gone...
Yep. I'll miss JO, but I'm ready to move on. Really its time for both the Pacers and JO.

TJ drastically improves our perimeter defense! He would be our best perimeter defender by far! Maybe we need to define Perimeter Defense for everyone.

His problems will come when he goes up against Chauncy Billups and the like who will abuse him in the post, but not on the perimeter.

Of course all this is dependent on if he stays healthy. That is the big gamble, not like we weren't in the same predicament with JO...

Man, our frontcourt is complete *** now. We need to deal Foster and/or Quis/Diogu for another pick or two.
At this point, Foster may have a limited market because he'd likely net a perimeter player and with this acquisition (and the #11 and #17), the Pacers don't really need backcourt help anymore. The latter - Quis and Ike - would be a lot better in terms of getting a decent PF.

I hate the trade. We have to depend on yet another injury prone player, do nothing to improve of perimeter defense, get a mid draft pick in a iffy year, the money aspect is a wash in my view point as we get one expire contract roughly the same amount as TJ's third year.

The silver lining is it is a step closer to getting rid of Larry.

I realize JO was going to go soon. But I wish wel avoid taking back an injury prone, overpaid player in return.
This is precisely how I feel. I don't know what the best trade is, but I don't want to make a trade just to get another injury prone starter. It does NOTHING to build continuity and extends the mediocrity of this team as long as this guy starts. Also, I don't care for the way he runs the team from the PG position.

As for Bird, I would like to see him succeed but I don't think he has it. Similar to Zeke, he should stay out of operations...

Our frontcourt was complete **** all of last year too. JO playing 40 games does nothing for us. So we can't be any worse off than last year.

Any chance we package picks and move up to get Mayo or Love?

Bird can not be judged for at least the next few years. Bird had very little control while Donnie was here. From what I've heard David Morway and Bird where usually on one page and Donnie on another the last few years.

I said heard, not read. There's no link. I wouldn't hold your breath for it happening unless something more is reported; I'm just throwing it out there as something interesting that came up today.
I wouldn't call him an insider, but I do know someone who does get some inside info from time to time. He mentioned Foster & 11 for Barbosa & 15 was discussed when I spoke with him last week.

Just a thought. I would even throw Shawne in.

He played in 75 and 72 games the two seasons before last years hit. Those are solid game totals. Just to remind everyone how bad that foul was last year here you go...

Are we really just going to cross our fingers and hope TJ stays healthy?

    We still need backcourt help.

No question. I continue to think that, regardless of who the individual players en up being or how they are acquired, we need to PGs or a PG/combo out of this draft just due to how shallow our backcourt is.

For the record, I have nothing at all against TJ Ford. I actually like him. I'm just concerned about being locked down for another three years with an injury-prone PG.

Hopefully it was just a fluke and he's rehabbed well.

Man, everyone is saying, we need this or we need that. No freakin' kidding fellas. We were a lotto team this year we need a lot of things. We have two picks tomorrow, if we pick wisely we can fill some of the problems everyone is pointing out. Of course, we have a hole in the front court right now. That'll happen when you trade you're starting PF. I bet we pick a big guy tomorrow and I'd also bet we aren't done dealing yet.

Uh, guys. It's not the same injury as JO's legs. This is more of an extreme, black/white thing. He'll either be as healthy as anyone, or he will be injured for a long stretch of time. I don't think he'll ever be (barring a new, non-related problem down the line) an on-again, off-again, play a week, sit a week, play a month, sit a month type of guy.

Let me clarify. The position of needing two guards out of this offseason for me is in no way related to getting Ford. It's simply been for me an offseason priority. Even if Dun can carry the mantle of starting SG, we still have no solid backup there IMO not to mention the fact that we have no starting PG (barring the fruition of the Tornonto rumor) and I honestly am not convinced Deiner is a viable long-term backup solution at point.

How? At this point the Pacers have - under contract - Ford, Tinsley, and Diener at PG.

Getting a starting-caliber PG is good enough at this point and there's actually depth at the position now. Most likely the 3 listed above won't remain in October but for now the backcourt (as well as SF and even SG due to Dunleavy and Granger) is at the very least solid enough...

Augustin at #11 would be perfect. Trade Tinsley and Diogu and get a good frontcourt player and this team is improved from last year, plain and simple. Nothing comes easy when rebuilding a team... But the key thing here is that Bird is officially committed to doing it by trading away the only All-Star on the squad.

We need the PG that will guard Billups. Ford\Diener can't stop the post up PGs.

With Shawne added that deal might catch the Suns' ear. I didn't think Foster only would. The salaries would work.

Only a handful of PGs can defend Billups period... Especially in the East.

More than a handful can do it better than Ford\Diener combo.
