I sure hope Bird doesn’t think TJ Ford is the answer to anything – he’s only marginally better than Diener. The ‘value’ in the trade described in the article is the 17th draft pick, not TJF. Here’s a look at Ford and Diener 2007/08 stats:

    Games: 51 (Games Stated: 26)
    MPG: 23.5 (lifetime 29.5)
    FG%: 46.9% (3-pt. 29.4%)
    Rebounds: 4.4 pg
    Assists: 6.1 pg
    Turnovers: 2.0 pg
    Steals: 1.1 pg
    Assists+Steals-TO’s: 5.2 pg

Here's the same info for Diener.:
    Games: 66 (Games Stated: 21)
    MPG: 20.5
    FG%: 37.0% (3-pt. 31.8%)
    Rebounds: 1.7 pg
    Assists: 3.8 pg
    Turnovers: 0.83 pg
    Steals: 0.53 pg
    Assists+Steals-TO’s: 3.5 pg
I totally agree and I still am not buying that this trade is done or even close.

From our perspective, why would you agree to this trade today ??

    1. The deal can't be consummated until next week at the earliest anyway.

    2. If you announce to the world that TJ Ford is your new PG, than you are also alerting everyone that you no longer covet a PG at #11 which is what everyone has assumed forever..............what would be the point in doing that ?? Unless you have a master plan to pair DJ and TJ in the same backcourt ???

    3. Why agree to the trade before you see who is still available at 17. Maybe you like 14 or 15 players in this draft...........what if all 14 or 15 are gone and your left reaching on a guy you don't have rated very high.......or on a guy who the rest of the league thinks is a 2nd rd pick at best...........hello James White......

    4. Why trade one of your best assets at his lowest possible value ??

    5. Why trade for a $25mm PG who isn't very good and has injury concerns and never plays a full season, when you already have a $25mm PG who isn't very good, has injury history, and who never plays a full season ??

In any event.....I think this is internet fodder leaked by a Toronto official. It makes less than zero sense even if Bird wants this deal............to announce it today or agree to it today.

If the guy you like is available at 17.............agree to it then at the earliest.

If TJ Ford is marginally better than Travis Diener, then Danny Granger is only marginally better than Adam Morrison.

Count me in the camp excited to see Ford in a Pacers uni. He's the best PG we've had since Jack easily.

We could maybe package JT and #11 for Jerome James.

I said heard, not read. There's no link. I wouldn't hold your breath for it happening unless something more is reported; I'm just throwing it out there as something interesting that came up today.

I hate the trade. We have to depend on yet another injury prone player, do nothing to improve of perimeter defense, get a mid draft pick in a iffy year, the money aspect is a wash in my view point as we get one expire contract roughly the same amount as TJ's third year.

The silver lining is it is a step closer to getting rid of Larry.

I realize JO was going to go soon. But I wish we avoid taking back an injury prone, overpaid player in return.

does anyone think we could possibly [i mean like even a slim chance] of packaging the 17th pick with maybe tinsley and moving up anywhere closer to the 11th?

I like your thinking, but seriously, what GM in their right mind would trade for Tinjury? Not if the value their job!

I completely agree with you on this point. I've seen no other report so far other than the Yahoo one and I've only seen "agreed in principle", which doesn't indicate it's a done deal yet. I personally like the deal, but I'll believe it when it's legit.

Yeah, I'll wait for pacers.com or something like that. I'm not even gonna switch over to my JO appreciation sig that I've had in the arsenal for the past year.

Hey, as long as we get a Kansas kid, I'll be happy.

I just hope the pick at #11 is not Koufos, rather Gordon/Augustin and the best available big at #17.

Well looks like it is about 95% official... so now that we are closer then ever, any mixed feelings? I'm really excited -as I always am- about the draft and this upcoming season. We land Augustin and Speights; looks like we will be turning a page in the organization hopefully for the better.

This is the best we were getting for JO. What other better deals have teams gotten out of overpaid "franchise" players? This deal is solid considering the ammount of salary that had to be moved and the nature of JO's injuries. We are getting another draft pick in a pretty deep draft and the most electrifying point we've had in years. I'm willing to bet that if it werent for that brutal Horford hit last year TJ would have played close to 80 games. Plus, his contract is insured. If his career is ended by his spinal stenosis his contract comes off the books.

T.J. really could end up being the starting PG of the Pacers for quite a while. He fits into the system perfectly - a deadly quick slashing PG who actually can get teammates involved but score plenty. One issue is definitely his propensity to fire up a lot of shots down the stretch - a la Tinsley - without being particularly clutch.

It's a good move for both teams, if it happens. JO and Bosh form an excellent East frontcourt and giving up Ford (thus allowing them to keep Calderon) is no problem for the Raps.

Although it is REALLY weird to imagine JO actually being gone...

Man, our frontcourt is complete *** now. We need to deal Foster and/or Quis/Diogu for another pick or two.
