Default heywoode's photos of the eagle and eagle's nest he saw today

So we have a fairly new nature area and walking trail here in Huntington, Indiana and it's down by the Wabash River and is near the DNR property that is the Huntington Reservoir, or J. Edward Roush Lake.

There is an eagle couple that nests there, and they just hatched two eaglets within the last month or so. We decided to walk the trail and check it out today. We didn't get to see the male bald eagle, but we saw the female and barely got to see one of the eaglets with it's head sticking out of the nest.

I don't know how to attach a Google Earth .kmz file or I would do that as well....

Here are some photos, if anyone is interested:

The little hairy nub just to the left of the tree on the right side of the nest is the head of one of the eaglets...Sadly, that is the best that I could do!

Great stuff, 'woode. Having been born about a half-mile from the "banks of the Wabash" myself, I'm always pleased to see any reference.

Kester, I just had the same question and looked it up. Evidently, they don't get "bald" until they are 5 years old.

yes, it is a bald eagle. You're not innigent....The females don't have the telltale white dome that the males have...That is why I was so disappointed about not getting to see the male...

EDIT: I just looked it up, and some females apparently DO have the white head, and some do not...Not sure what is up with that....We were pretty sure the one we saw was the female, and another person who had been there several times said that we were looking at the female because he had seen the male, and there was no mistaking that it was a full grown, white head, bald eagle...

Thanks for the extra info, putty! You rock!

Heywoode, those are baseball fields in the overhead photo, right? Amazing that the eagles are nesting that close to human activity.

are you sure they aren't golden eagles? Nonetheless, very very nice. Nice pickup. Nature is so awesome.

I saw and photographed a bald eagle's nest in Muscatatuck once during an Ecology class...there was a pretty big male flying around at the time.

Yes, those are baseball fields, but they stopped using them for organized leagues when they built a new four diamond park on the east side of that road. The new park is a couple hundred yards east of the road...

The area of the nest is right along the river, and there are two sets of tree lines that separate the river from the areas of activity. As the eagle flies (pardon the pun!), it is still fairly close to human activity, so yes, it is a little peculiar. The aerial photo doesn't really tell the story of what is happening in the area, however, so I thought I would expound a little.

Now that you mention it, the female does look like a golden eagle. I will do some asking around with our DNR people and see if I can find out some more info.

Not sure of the proximity to my area that most users here have, but if anyone is a nature buff and is interested, I would be happy to send anyone information about coming to our city and area. We have two fairly substantial reservoirs in our county, and we are only 24 miles by 16 miles in area. We have oustanding opportunities for water activities, nature trails, and even one of the state's longest mountain bike trail. We host a two day sanctioned on/off road bicycle race every year that draws hundreds of riders in multiple divisions and age groups for men and women that offers cash prizes. There are even two courses that are only 5 and 15 miles for beginners or recreational riders.

We have a fantastic visitor's bureau, and their site is at www.visithuntington.org. We are also only about 30 minutes away from Fort Wayne; which is the second largest city in Indiana, and offers a wide range of dining and cultural activities.

If you want to explore the geography of Huntington County, Indiana, you can do so at the GIS site that I run and administer: http://gis.huntington.in.us.

Okay, I'll get off my soap box!

Glad you all enjoyed the photos!
