One of my favorite things to do that I haven't done in a couple years is to set up shop at the top of an old barn with a few good friends, some coolers full of your favorite beverages and whatnot, and a rifle of your chosing. Then you get a recorded tape/cd/whatever of nothing but cats shrieking/fighting; then wait for the coyotes to show up and for the fun to begin!

    Recorded tape huh.

Guns and booze are the start of every great story.

Perhaps we need to reintroduce grizzley's to control the wolf population.

BTW, a few mornings ago I saw what I thought was a coyote wandering through one of my fields. He was a couple hundred yards off and by the time I got the rifle he was gone. I'm thinking sometime about maybe putting in some goats with the Hispanic population around but the coyote situation will take a bit of work.

    Donkey or llama?
Donkey. Llamas are for Peruvians...unless they are the .45 cal type.

Years ago I liked to carry a Thompson Contender pistol on the tractor just for that purpose. Lots of firepower and lots of range. Hadd to climb down off'n the tractor tho...too much vibration for the scope.

Or we could just legalize hunting and put a bounty on the anti-gun crowd. Hmmmmthere's an idea!! You realize how fast those people would shut up if we gun owners enacted a bounty on the anti's???

A kid I grew up with had a Dad who lost his leg by having a loaded firearm on a tractor with him.

I used to ALWAYS carry a handgun - you ride horses enough, one'll break a leg on ya. And now and then you ran into some sort of varmint.

When I go home for Thanksgiving I always see a sight that my friends would die over.

If there's snow cover, whenever you see a dairy farmer out spreading manure the turkey's and Pheasants just explode on the scene - hundred's of 'em.

In one of my business classes this past semester, this kid told a story about how his unlce blew his right nut off with a shotgun when he was a kid. So yeah, I guess it does happen.

The T/C is a single shot pistol which had to be breech loaded and then hand cocked to fire. Plus they have a truely good safety system on them. I prefer the .35 Remington with a 180 grain bullet but I've also had the 45-70 with a 200 grain shell. For close work there is the 45/410 barrel that I like to put the .410 shell in. All with a ported 14 inch barrel. Not much risk of shooting yer leg off if it is on safety and holstered. Like I said...I had to climb down off the tractor to fire it.

I have been talking with a wildlife biologist about establishing a Pheasant Forever or Quail FOrever chapter in my neck o the woods.

Over the weekend while driving back from Michigan I noted several miles of interstate where there exist medians a couple of hundred feet wide and road borders perhaps half that on each side. Why not let an organization like PF or QF manage these for habitat to help re-establish game birds in areas of the state. I know the areas would have to be wide enough to allow some for snow/salt runoff without harming the birds.

The flooding would be hard on those efforts but otherwise the climate is mild here. With nesting pheasants should do well.

But I sure don't see any in my travels.

Up here Red-tails devastate them - we have a very active PF chapter - lot of prairie grass plantings and a guy who raises & releases chicks but the hawks get most of 'em. We're short on woods but not THAT short.

Coyotes too. They kill a lot of birds and eggs.

Years ago Iowa was fantastic for pheasant but spring flooding and freezing rain have really wiped out the population.

Frankly I'd go to South Dakota if I was planning a hunt these days.

I know there is a very active chapter in Carmel too. I'm just not interested in working their plot of ground just outside of town. Don't know what else they are working on but I saw that one. I have a farmer here in Hancock county that offered both sides of a creek for some width and then one mile long. I emailed the Carmel group and received no reply back, so I figured they weren't interested. Perhaps a Quail Forever chapter would be more successful out here. It really torques me off when one of my "intelligent" friends, who reads too much and knows too little, says that they can never be established in the area because the soil pH is all wrong. Well, they were here when I was a kid. But he doesn't wanna hear that or that the real problem is all of the fence rows have been ripped out. No fence row, no pheasant/quail runs...no shelter IOW. It's all about HABITAT. that and the farmers not leaving as much grain on the ground during harvest. Sometimes they're just too efficient.

I wish I had the "follow-through" to get this started.

I believe what we need in Indiana is a statewide effort to NOT mow road ditches and fields placed in set aside grass programs across the state.
