So how does a young person get started? He rented an apt. but how to pay for furniture, a car, car insurance, and living expenses until the paychecks start rolling in? How do you do it?
Bum any furniture off of family and friends or build furniture out of readily available material like milk crates and some wood from your dad. Ahh nice memories of my very first coffee table.

I love the fourth as much as the next person, but there is no need to set fireworks off at 1 AM.

OTOH....how do old men do it when they have to support a wife and kids, pay for housing, food, utilities, cable, multiple cars and multiple car insurances, along with beer, a girl-friend or two, and all of the other necessities of life????
Consider the 1st part as training for the 2nd. Just different allocations.

Good luck to him. It's a fun & scary part of life. I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that he'll be doing some business with Bank of Grandpa. Just keep the interest rates below double digits.

    Nope, Bank of Dad.

Two days of intensive car shopping (he was a bundle of nerves last night) and he got his deal today. He'll pick it up Tuesday night when he gets back from up north. Found a Honda Civic Hybrid *used* on the lot for $12995 went back today after seeing that they had an internet special of $9995. I let him do the negotiating and he came away with it on a 48 month loan at 5.1% (rate could be lower but he had no prior credit). He's happy with the payment and it looks brand new (it's not)

Now to get some insurance quotes. QUESTION....can he shop around or is it best to go with the same company I'm with (Am Fam)?

oh and we got a whole drawer full of spoons, knives, and forks at a garage sale for $5.

    FOLLOW-UP

My what a whirlwind weekend that was. Not only did Geezer Jr. find a car but he set up financing, which didn't even require my co-signing, found an apartment and leased it. YEsterday we spent driving 6 hrs round trip to take things to his apartment which is just a stones throw from Das Essenhaus in Middlebury (Elkhart County). MY LORD WHAT BEAUTIFUL COUNTRY!! If any of you go to Amish Acres you know what I am talking about.

Sitting out back in the shade, daughter has gone shopping and the wife is out with the girls from work. I'm sitting here with a glass of Jim Beam Black and a Davidoff Entreacto cigar (a very rare treat). Does it get any better than this?

Guilty or not Sanford Florida as a town is done. This was a small town to begin with. A place at the bottom of the Florida power structure which is ruled by Miami and Orlando, and a few other places. After Trayvon, Don West and his ice cream photo, and the police chief who had to step down in shame....that town will now and forever be known as that racist place where they were gonna let an unarmed teenager get shot dead and not even make an arrest of a wannabe cop/loser who killed him. Their rep is now down there with Selma Alabama, Jasper Texas, and a few other places across America. In America, reputation is everything. And can be the difference between tourism, and being dry. And just imagine if another racially charged issue occurs in Sanford. CNN and other networks will pull out the old footage of Trayvon and remind people that Sanford is the new KKK hangout. That town is finished as far as reputation is concerned. Whether Zimmerman is set free, or thrown in the clink.

There are a lot of small towns in America that are just one ugly race incident away from losing what little tourism they have. And the media slandering their name forever. Small towns across America are always looking for their 15 minutes of fame for an economic boost. But this is the type of 15 minutes no small town wants. Sanford will never live down this incident. And this looks bad for Florida too. A state where the 2000 election, and Casey Anthony still hang over their heads.

I just had to role my eyes when Indianapolis officials came out asking everyone to keep their cool after the verdict comes through.

I followed the case and I just do not think they proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that Zimmerman murdered the kid. I think they could get hi on manslaughter and I would agree with that one. Sadly, people made their minds up the moment the story broke.

While a few of the recent thoughts may be disturbed, they are neither random nor scattered.

    Thanks.

I was talking with a suburban lender this past Friday. Although we've never met and only emailed and phone talked ( quite abit lately) he invited me to join his foursome in tourney in August. He was one shy for the foursome so I'm in. Free lunch and dinner along with free golf, door prizes, etc. since its a best ball scramble it really doesn't matter that I suck.

Are suspenders allowed on a golf course? I'll look like I'm wearing lederhosen but it beat having my pants drop every time I swing a club.

Yes ... Kudos to Lefty and the Open.

If Tiger never wins another major, that would be just fine with me.

Found out last week that my cousin has been hired to be the technical consutant for the book.....Beginning Banjo for Dummies. Kara is a folk/bluegrass musician in Nashville, Indiana. She is also an artist who has been painting murals on the side of buildings in Bloomington (most notably TIS Bookstore).

He can shop around, but I would get his insurance from same company he will get his renter's coverage from.
