Another break-in in my neighborhood this weekend. TV said last week that there had been 17, but the neighborhood association said that was only the 2nd one the knew of. That's the same thing they said last time.

And still Mrs G doesn't want a new dog or a security system. She'll completly freak when I bring a handgun to hide in the BR.

Your city-county councillor gets a monthly crime report from IMPD.
Perhaps you could request it. The map and list of incidents is a real eye-opener.

Hancock County within the town limits of Cumberland (which is primarily in Marion County)

and I found out last night that 2 mos ago one of our friends came home early to discover a burglar in her house. She said that she turned and ran to her car, expecting to be shot in the back at any instant. He stood and watched her get in the car and call 911. She pulled away and as she watched, a 2nd guy came out of the house and they got in their car and drove away. She was able to give a good enough description that they were soon caught and they confessed.

And still Mrs. G doesn't want either a dog or an alarm system.

"Yes dear"...is that "having a say"? No, it's alot about we waited until the 16 year old lab was gone before buying new carpet and furniture, now she doesn't wanna give that dream up for another dog. Plus she's really not over losing the lab, it's only been a couple of months.

She also likes to bury her head in the sand about "issues" too.

No I know that it's going to come down to me just doing it and putting up with the wrath of god. But she'll eventually come around after I do it. I think too...we're having 20 odd peole in for Thanksgiving and there is the "puppy under foot" aspect there.

Geez, if you still have your old work ID you can get a discount with Guardian Protection Services. They offer a discount to current employees but if you flash the badge I'm sure it would work.

Also this link is useful. You're close enough to Marion County that this should still work.

It's an interactive crime map. You can see what is happening all around the city right now, you can search by address and see what has happened within a mile radius of that address in the last month. We used it a TON during our search for a home. Our realtor told us that a house we were looking at was in a safe neighborhood, his office pulls crime reports on all their listings and he'd looked it over himself. When we looked at it, there were 19 incidents within a mile in the last 30 days.

not giving me info outside of Marion County, but I'mm checking with County Sheriff and Muni police.

I just got off the phone with an ADT rep (leave it to them to know this)...latest FBI stats puts it at 225 breakins a week for 46229 zip code.

Geez, this sounds like an extremely fishy sales ploy to me. If you look at the FBI's crime database, there were 1200 reported burglaries in 46229 in all of 2008, which is the most recent data available there. The number you were quoted works out to 11,700. Just thought I'd let ya know...

Thanks...I didn't do the math...but I honestly doubted the numbers. I live here...I don't hear that many sirens in a day. (that works out to 32 police runs a day....doubt if it's that much with fire and ambulance thrown in!

However.....even 3 1/3 burglaries a day sounds like too many.

She said to keep after her about the security system, she's coming around on that...but NO DOGS ALLOWED.

Becca was the first PET she had ever had and had never before gone thru putting a pet down. She doesn't wanna go thru that again (allowing for the fact thtat the Maltese will not live forever).

So I guess an alarm system and no dog is better than nothing.

From what I've seen, the Brinks keypad is easiest to understand.

    Geezer,

No question you should wire that place and get a security system. I wouldn't wait myself. If you get hit you will not enjoy it.

I lived down by you one time and was burglarized twice in a week.

It was a maddening sense of violation.

Of course the long term solution is to move. Life is too short.

    Those numbers aren't good.

My 2 cents. Congratulations on Geezerette's first deer. That's big stuff.

Yeah, 20 some years ago, and in another neighborhood, our home was broken into while we were in Florida. Sheriff office called and said they were boarding up the front door that had been kicked in and they would continue watching for them to come back (a nosey neighbor had seen them and called it in). Weird feeling coming home and seeing dusting powder over everything.
The worst part was thinking it was someone that knew us...the intruder had left a malfunctioning TV but took all the other electronics.
