Trying to be a good neighbor, I mow the yard of an elderly fellow who lives in a cul de sac off my street. He is of extremely advanced age and is not familiar with machinery (indeed, I am not sure that his house even has electricity). A day or two after I mow his lawn, an envelope will appear in my mailbox, containing a thank you note, maybe a clipped magazine article of interest, or a short note on some subject of presumed mutual concern. I often reply to these missives, placing notes in his mailbox.

In recent years, our communications have turned to focus more and more on (of all things -- this is Georgia, after all) the Indiana Pacers. As I noted, I do not believe his home has access to an electrical current, yet he seems most familiar and 'current' (heh heh) with team news...and even, to my great surprise, the postings of Pacers fans on the website The Pacers Digest.

This afternoon, I found this note from the old fellow in my mailbox. I post it here for your appraisal, and I post it here because of its frankly disturbing nature, and because I don't know quite what to make of it.

"Disregarding the need to be seen as being capable of any mundane rationation, or what may be considered mundane and safely normal by the great majority of Humanity's Herd, I will tell you, my friend, that I am beginning to believe that (in his time as a Pacer) Troy Murphy was practicing some form of Dark Arts...perhaps spiking the Pacers KoolAid with some Noisome Physick, or washing his fellows' concentration away with Mystery Rays from a modified tanning machine....all to make his own contributions seem more 'legitimate.'

How else to explain the Improvement in Defense that his departure has wrought, or the renewed Vitalitie and Vigour of his erstwhile teammates?

Theorizing and speculating as to the effects of the Basket Ball Player Murphy's absence are currently filling the pages of the main board of The Pacers Digest...but could even the most damning of these Speculations be Mere Shades of the more Sinister Truth? That dire reality being that Murphy was a Practitoner of Unsportsmanlike Magyck, engaged in unspeakable...Practices...or Acts, to the detriment of our doughty Pacers' Well-Being, and in whose Blessed and Timely Absence the course of the health of our young athletes has begun to seek that robust mean to which our Creator surely intended it to cleave?

Food for thought, dear correspondent, and one whose true taste must forever escape us, as the suspected Villain Murphy has Escaped, Absconded and Absented Himself, probably into the more uncharted and dangerous reaches of the swamps of New Jersey, where he will no doubt be able to find another crew of Unsuspecting Innocents upon which to work his wiles.

Thank you for cutting the grass again.

Please take care next time to avoid interfering with the new growth of the cuphea glutinosa.

    -- L. Namrevats"

Life is but a nebular web of existential freedom, an endless fog of personal reincarnations with brief clear interludes of happiness, despair, absurdity, and a few well-executed screen passes.

    Ditto to Gyron! Happy Thanksgiving.

So far, I have not tasted the pumpkin pie, and as usual, haven't left any room for it. I'll get there, though.

My feet hurt so bad I can barely make it out to the living room. I toured Purdue with Geezerette today. (Meteorology major) We walked the entire campus and climbed untold flights of stairs but I have to admit, it's a much nicer campus than I've believed. Not having ever been to anything other than Ross Aide stadium, I knew nothing of the place other than personal animous.
Geezerette now has to decide if Meteorology is her chosen field or not. If it is, it mean going somewhere other than IU which she loves) or going to IU and finding something else to study. Meteorolgy has been the only thing she has ever thought of since the day, 10 years ago, a F5 tornado came within 200 ft. of our home....as we stood watching it. But she recently visited the National Weather Service in Indy and came away devastated. 8 Hrs. a day staring at a bank of computer screens did not appeal to her at all...although the idea of an advanced degree in Earth and Atmospheric Science with entry into the astronaut corps was appealing (mush less so to mom).

Begrudgingly I must admit....it seems a nice place to study.

Is the SIG to shoot the TV when you are tired of seeing the Wii?

    Exactly.

Geez - you better buy another TV for the Wii.

Did I mention I'm building a man-cave and have already purchased a 42" RCA for it?

And the Sig turned into a Walther PK-380 which is a match to my Walther P22. Now the lazer sight is interchangable and I can use P22 for cheap range time. And I love the fit to my hand.

Still haven't heard any word on Qatar. Starting to really be depressing. I was so ready to go, and my excitment is just dwindling.

It looks like the end of Feb will be the date.

Maybe they're still celebrating getting the World Cup Soccer match (I think it was Qatar that won the right to host it).

The company that has the contract thinks they will lose it for next term, which is March 2011-Feb. 2013. That's the hold up, right now.

But because of the experience of other two guys we are going with, we are on top priority. They expect they will need to send some more over at the beginning of Feb. because they expect some people to go home early and will need replacements. But they also know that whatever company gets the contract will just keep everyone in place, and add more, so they're saying they will get us over there before the transition happens so we can stay on with the new company.

Which sucks, but at the same time, the new contract will be for more money. Which means more money for us, so it's not all a bad thing. I just hate waiting, especially on something like this where I could get a call tomorrow saying I was leaving next week.

They were putting our odds of going early above 90% and if it falls through when there was such high probability, it's really gonna hurt.

But can't think like that, gotta stay positive.

We went to IU last evening to see the Singing Hoosiers Christmas show. Geezer Jr. is a sophomore Vocal Music Education major and a member of this choir. We knew that he was to be a member of a quartet featured for one number during the show but he neglected to tell us he was the lead singer and soloist. Then, on another number he was one of 4 guys singing back-up for a girl singing a semi-rock 60's style doo-wop Christmas song. Not only singing, but dancing the doo-wop part. Altogether it made mom and pop puff up their chests just a bit (and shed a couple of tears too).

You realize that deer season is almost over and I haven't been out hunting once? Geezerette wanting to go along sure puts a crimp in my hunting time. I mention a day/time I'm going and I immediately hear...."but daddy, I can't go then. You gotta wait till I can go...." "daddy" gets me every time.

Ya know....I really do enjoy eating rabbit. Much more than venison.
