Anyone ever wonder if Bird isn't actually hanging around to one day take over the role of all personnel decisions but instead is waiting around to assume ownership (or partial ownership and/or control) of the team?

Do we know that ISN'T the case? I've never heard the subject talked about on any serious level so maybe someone out there has some info that totally would debunk that. Does he have the money and backing to do even do it?

Nuntius was right. I was wrong. Frank Vogel has retained his job.

That's exactly what I was about to say.

    This summer:

    Donnie retires
    Simons sell to Bird
    Bird hires Carlisle to GM
    O'Brien keeps coaching

Didn't Bird try to buy a team previously with a group of investors?

I never really considered that...but it isn't out of the realm of possibility that he would want to buy the team somewhere down the road...again with the help of other investors.
When you're playing against a stacked deck, compete even harder. Show the world how much you'll fight for the winners circle. If you do, someday the cellophane will crackle off a fresh pack, one that belongs to you, and the cards will be stacked in your favor.

Does Bird have part ownership in the team now. Or wasn't he offered part-ownership in the team - or am I dreaming???

I don't think Bird would want to throw good money after bad, unless the Simons sell at a fire sale price. Aren't the Pacers losing money?

Yes, he tried to get the expansion team in Charlotte. I laughed hysterically when he didn't get it. Now I wish he would have gotten it.

I can't begin to describe how physically ill it makes me feel to think of Larry Bird owning the Pacers.

Excuse me while I go make a Pepto Bismol/Benadryl Smoothie.
