This trade will probably be castigated but I'm at the point where I don't care too much.
I am proposing this trade not because the Pacers are going to be the worst team in the league this season, hell with the current roster we have we probably have a chance of making the playoffs.
I'm simply tired of lingering around .500, I'm tired of getting the 15th pick in the draft every year. If this team is ever going to surpass mediocrity and actually PROGESS instead of being stagnant for the rest of recorded history then we're going to have to tear things down, suck for a couple of years, and rebuild, see "Portland Trail Blazers" as an example.
In fact I think with this trade we will suck terribly only for a season and a half. Attendence will plummet (but it sucks now, our fans for the most part of terrible, so let them be ****ing fair weather and they'll come back next year when we're more interesting, but for now, **** the fans) for this year and probably next we'll be lucky to win 29 or 30 games. But many, many contracts come off the books in the offseason two years from now and we'll have the opportunity to sign two great FA's who will fit in with this team well.
But it has to all get started with a big trade. And any team rebuilding in today's NBA should know that that trade should be the New York Knicks and the always guillible Isiah Thomas.
The gist of this trade is JO and Tinsley to NY for a bunch of their terrible contracts, one good young prospect and one okay young prospect, and a pick.
Why? Because IT loved especially JO and Tinsley as well when he coached here. He is in such hot water he needs a trade. And he's silly enough to think that they're the help he needs. This trade would give him the luxury of dumping Eddy Curry or Zack Randolph, neither who I don't think he is high on, for essentially nothing to another desperate team.
I really do like Tinsley. But the fans here are, in large part, hardheaded and ignorant and won't completely forget about the brawl until he is gone.
Granger is involved in this trade as well. Why? Because he's proven this year he's essentially a slightly more inconsistent Dunleavy, and we don't need that. NOW is the time to trade Granger when he still is overrated among league officials as a possible future star. Shawne has more talent IMHO and will be a better player in the long run. Plus I think we may need a young guy like Granger to act as a sweetener in order to entice IT to pull the trigger on this deal.
Murph is involved as well. Yes, he's a terrible contract, but we're taking about 3 of their terrible contracts, sorry IT but you can't give up all of those bad contracts scot-free.
So here it is:
Indiana Pacers
Outgoing Players: Jermaine O'Neal, Danny Granger, Ike Diogu, Troy Murphy, Jamaal Tinsley
New York Knicks
Outgoing Players: Renaldo Balkman, Quentin Richardson, David Lee, Malik Rose, Stephon Marbury, Fred Jones
Why I want/what I would do with the players we get in this trade...
1.) Balkman: in a sophomore slump IMHO, I think IT would trade him if given the opportunity. He showed flashes of being a Rodman-esque player last year, he's a pretty good defender and a hard worker, for whatever reason he essentially has been benched. He's got a bit of an enforcer attitude without the off court baggage, which is something this team needs. Think of him as this Pacer team's Dale Davis.
2.) Q-Rich: This is the contract I really don't like, it's similar to Murph's, but I think Q-Rich is a player with less liabilitity on the court than Murph, and that he would fit decently into our system. If you look at his stats, Q-Rich has always thrived in more wide open systems ala the Suns and the Clippers, but has always struggled on more half court teams like the Knicks. I think he'd be a pleasant suprise.
3.) David Lee: Undersized, but hard working PF. He's basically what Ike Diogu was supposed to be, I think can start at PF for us. His numbers should be better but he's playing behind Randolph and Curry.
4.) Malik Rose: Strictly salary cap fodder, put him on the end of the bench and let him go at the end of next year.
5.) Stephon Marbury: Mostly salary cap fodder, the fans will probably hate him. However his deal ends one year earlier than JO's as per realgm.com, and the fans seem to be either uninterested in or turning on JO. I don't really care what Marbury does for the 1.5 years he is here, as long as he is an okay starting PG. Even if he alienates the fans, who cares, attendence is bad as it is and can't get much worse.
6.) Fred Jones: I like his explosiveness when he was here, give him a try in Obie's system. If not, he expires at the end of the year.
In short: when Steph, Rose, and Q-Rich come off the books, use that money to sign the best FA's for our team ala Portland.
