The Rules of Pacers Digest

Hello everyone,

Whether your are a long standing forum member or whether you have just registered today, it's a good idea to read and review the rules below so that you have a very good idea of what to expect when you come to Pacers Digest.

A quick note to new members: Your posts will not immediately show up when you make them. An administrator has to approve at least your first post before the forum software will later upgrade your account to the status of a fully-registered member. This usually happens within a couple of hours or so after your post(s) is/are approved, so you may need to be a little patient at first.

Why do we do this? So that it's more difficult for spammers (be they human or robot) to post, and so users who are banned cannot immediately re-register and start dousing people with verbal flames.

Below are the rules of Pacers Digest. After you have read them, you will have a very good sense of where we are coming from, what we expect, what we don't want to see, and how we react to things.

Rule #1

Pacers Digest is intended to be a place to discuss basketball without having to deal with the kinds of behaviors or attitudes that distract people from sticking with the discussion of the topics at hand. These unwanted distractions can come in many forms, and admittedly it can sometimes be tricky to pin down each and every kind that can rear its ugly head, but we feel that the following examples and explanations cover at least a good portion of that ground and should at least give people a pretty good idea of the kinds of things we actively discourage:

"Anyone who __________ is a liar / a fool / an idiot / a blind homer / has their head buried in the sand / a blind hater / doesn't know basketball / doesn't watch the games"

"People with intelligence will agree with me when I say that __________"

"Only stupid people think / believe / do ___________"

"I can't wait to hear something from PosterX when he/she sees that **insert a given incident or current event that will have probably upset or disappointed PosterX here**"

"He/she is just delusional"

"This thread is stupid / worthless / embarrassing"

"I'm going to take a moment to point and / laugh at PosterX / GroupOfPeopleY who thought / believed *insert though/belief here*"

"Remember when PosterX said OldCommentY that no longer looks good? "

In general, if a comment goes from purely on topic to something 'ad hominem' (personal jabs, personal shots, attacks, flames, however you want to call it, towards a person, or a group of people, or a given city/state/country of people), those are most likely going to be found intolerable.

We also dissuade passive aggressive behavior. This can be various things, but common examples include statements that are basically meant to imply someone is either stupid or otherwise incapable of holding a rational conversation. This can include (but is not limited to) laughing at someone's conclusions rather than offering an honest rebuttal, asking people what game they were watching, or another common problem is Poster X will say "that player isn't that bad" and then Poster Y will say something akin to "LOL you think that player is good". We're not going to tolerate those kinds of comments out of respect for the community at large and for the sake of trying to just have an honest conversation.

Now, does the above cover absolutely every single kind of distraction that is unwanted? Probably not, but you should by now have a good idea of the general types of things we will be discouraging. The above examples are meant to give you a good feel for / idea of what we're looking for. If something new or different than the above happens to come along and results in the same problem (that being, any other attitude or behavior that ultimately distracts from actually just discussing the topic at hand, or that is otherwise disrespectful to other posters), we can and we will take action to curb this as well, so please don't take this to mean that if you managed to technically avoid saying something exactly like one of the above examples that you are then somehow off the hook.

That all having been said, our goal is to do so in a generally kind and respectful way, and that doesn't mean the moment we see something we don't like that somebody is going to be suspended or banned, either. It just means that at the very least we will probably say something about it, quite possibly snipping out the distracting parts of the post in question while leaving alone the parts that are actually just discussing the topics, and in the event of a repeating or excessive problem, then we will start issuing infractions to try to further discourage further repeat problems, and if it just never seems to improve, then finally suspensions or bans will come into play. We would prefer it never went that far, and most of the time for most of our posters, it won't ever have to.

A slip up every once and a while is pretty normal, but, again, when it becomes repetitive or excessive, something will be done. Something occasional is probably going to be let go (within reason), but when it starts to become habitual or otherwise a pattern, odds are very good that we will step in.

There's always a small minority that like to push people's buttons and/or test their own boundaries with regards to the administrators, and in the case of someone acting like that, please be aware that this is not a court of law, but a private website run by people who are simply trying to do the right thing as they see it. If we feel that you are a special case that needs to be dealt with in an exceptional way because your behavior isn't explicitly mirroring one of our above examples of what we generally discourage, we can and we will take atypical action to prevent this from continuing if you are not cooperative with us.

Also please be aware that you will not be given a pass simply by claiming that you were 'only joking,' because quite honestly, when someone really is just joking, for one thing most people tend to pick up on the joke, including the person or group that is the target of the joke, and for another thing, in the event where an honest joke gets taken seriously and it upsets or angers someone, the person who is truly 'only joking' will quite commonly go out of his / her way to apologize and will try to mend fences. People who are dishonest about their statements being 'jokes' do not do so, and in turn that becomes a clear sign of what is really going on. It's nothing new.

In any case, quite frankly, the overall quality and health of the entire forum's community is more important than any one troublesome user will ever be, regardless of exactly how a problem is exhibiting itself, and if it comes down to us having to make a choice between you versus the greater health and happiness of the entire community, the community of this forum will win every time.

Lastly, there are also some posters, who are generally great contributors and do not otherwise cause any problems, who sometimes feel it's their place to provoke or to otherwise 'mess with' that small minority of people described in the last paragraph, and while we possibly might understand why you might feel you WANT to do something like that, the truth is we can't actually tolerate that kind of behavior from you any more than we can tolerate the behavior from them. So if we feel that you are trying to provoke those other posters into doing or saying something that will get themselves into trouble, then we will start to view you as a problem as well, because of the same reason as before: The overall health of the forum comes first, and trying to stir the pot with someone like that doesn't help, it just makes it worse. Some will simply disagree with this philosophy, but if so, then so be it because ultimately we have to do what we think is best so long as it's up to us.

If you see a problem that we haven't addressed, the best and most appropriate course for a forum member to take here is to look over to the left of the post in question. See underneath that poster's name, avatar, and other info, down where there's a little triangle with an exclamation point (!) in it? Click that. That allows you to report the post to the admins so we can definitely notice it and give it a look to see what we feel we should do about it. Beyond that, obviously it's human nature sometimes to want to speak up to the poster in question who has bothered you, but we would ask that you try to refrain from doing so because quite often what happens is two or more posters all start going back and forth about the original offending post, and suddenly the entire thread is off topic or otherwise derailed. So while the urge to police it yourself is understandable, it's best to just report it to us and let us handle it. Thank you!

All of the above is going to be subject to a case by case basis, but generally and broadly speaking, this should give everyone a pretty good idea of how things will typically / most often be handled.

Rule #2

If the actions of an administrator inspire you to make a comment, criticism, or express a concern about it, there is a wrong place and a couple of right places to do so.

The wrong place is to do so in the original thread in which the administrator took action. For example, if a post gets an infraction, or a post gets deleted, or a comment within a larger post gets clipped out, in a thread discussing Paul George, the wrong thing to do is to distract from the discussion of Paul George by adding your off topic thoughts on what the administrator did.

The right places to do so are:

A) Start a thread about the specific incident you want to talk about on the Feedback board. This way you are able to express yourself in an area that doesn't throw another thread off topic, and this way others can add their two cents as well if they wish, and additionally if there's something that needs to be said by the administrators, that is where they will respond to it.

B) Send a private message to the administrators, and they can respond to you that way.

If this is done the wrong way, those comments will be deleted, and if it's a repeating problem then it may also receive an infraction as well.

Rule #3

If a poster is bothering you, and an administrator has not or will not deal with that poster to the extent that you would prefer, you have a powerful tool at your disposal, one that has recently been upgraded and is now better than ever: The ability to ignore a user.

When you ignore a user, you will unfortunately still see some hints of their existence (nothing we can do about that), however, it does the following key things:

A) Any post they make will be completely invisible as you scroll through a thread.

B) The new addition to this feature: If someone QUOTES a user you are ignoring, you do not have to read who it was, or what that poster said, unless you go out of your way to click on a link to find out who it is and what they said.

To utilize this feature, from any page on Pacers Digest, scroll to the top of the page, look to the top right where it says 'Settings' and click that. From the settings page, look to the left side of the page where it says 'My Settings', and look down from there until you see 'Edit Ignore List' and click that. From here, it will say 'Add a Member to Your List...' Beneath that, click in the text box to the right of 'User Name', type in or copy & paste the username of the poster you are ignoring, and once their name is in the box, look over to the far right and click the 'Okay' button. All done!

Rule #4

Regarding infractions, currently they carry a value of one point each, and that point will expire in 31 days. If at any point a poster is carrying three points at the same time, that poster will be suspended until the oldest of the three points expires.

Rule #5

When you share or paste content or articles from another website, you must include the URL/link back to where you found it, who wrote it, and what website it's from. Said content will be removed if this doesn't happen.

An example:

If I copy and paste an article from the Indianapolis Star website, I would post something like this:

http://www.linktothearticlegoeshere.com/article
Title of the Article
Author's Name
Indianapolis Star

Rule #6

We cannot tolerate illegal videos on Pacers Digest. This means do not share any links to them, do not mention any websites that host them or link to them, do not describe how to find them in any way, and do not ask about them. Posts doing anything of the sort will be removed, the offenders will be contacted privately, and if the problem becomes habitual, you will be suspended, and if it still persists, you will probably be banned.

The legal means of watching or listening to NBA games are NBA League Pass Broadband (for US, or for International; both cost money) and NBA Audio League Pass (which is free). Look for them on NBA.com.

Rule #7

Provocative statements in a signature, or as an avatar, or as the 'tagline' beneath a poster's username (where it says 'Member' or 'Administrator' by default, if it is not altered) are an unwanted distraction that will more than likely be removed on sight. There can be shades of gray to this, but in general this could be something political or religious that is likely going to provoke or upset people, or otherwise something that is mean-spirited at the expense of a poster, a group of people, or a population.

It may or may not go without saying, but this goes for threads and posts as well, particularly when it's not made on the off-topic board (Market Square).

We do make exceptions if we feel the content is both innocuous and unlikely to cause social problems on the forum (such as wishing someone a Merry Christmas or a Happy Easter), and we also also make exceptions if such topics come up with regards to a sports figure (such as the Lance Stephenson situation bringing up discussions of domestic abuse and the law, or when Jason Collins came out as gay and how that lead to some discussion about gay rights).

However, once the discussion seems to be more/mostly about the political issues instead of the sports figure or his specific situation, the thread is usually closed.

Rule #8

We prefer self-restraint and/or modesty when making jokes or off topic comments in a sports discussion thread. They can be fun, but sometimes they derail or distract from a topic, and we don't want to see that happen. If we feel it is a problem, we will either delete or move those posts from the thread.

Rule #9

Generally speaking, we try to be a "PG-13" rated board, and we don't want to see sexual content or similarly suggestive content. Vulgarity is a more muddled issue, though again we prefer things to lean more towards "PG-13" than "R". If we feel things have gone too far, we will step in.

Rule #10

We like small signatures, not big signatures. The bigger the signature, the more likely it is an annoying or distracting signature.

Rule #11

Do not advertise anything without talking about it with the administrators first. This includes advertising with your signature, with your avatar, through private messaging, and/or by making a thread or post.

Re: Bitter thoughts after the loss to the Suns

Perhaps it helps to sleep for 6 hours between the time the game ends and the time I responded in this thread.

I think it is important to put things in perspective and not just look at the last couple of minutes of the 4th and OT in a vacuum. So that is what I will attempt to do.

Bare with me here, this is all from memory (I watched the game live and only once). Let me first say that the Pacers basically ran two different plays in the OT and the last 4 minutes of regulations. One was a JT post up, the other once was a pass to the big guy (Jeff) at the elbow, and then JT and a wing player would cross cut and jeff would give the ball to the open guy. Both plays were working. Pacers got several wide open good looks from 3 late in regulation. Granger missed two really good looks, and there were a couple of other really good looks that were missed. If they had hit one of those threes, the pacers win the game.

Those two plays were also run in the OT. Yes JT took all the shots - but he did also hit a few of those.

Am I happy that JT took all the shots - no, but no one else was hitting anything. The only real complaint I have with Jim is that Williams didn't come back in at the end of regulation. He had 5 fouls and he was dead tired when he was taken out, but he should have been in the game near the end.

Yes it was a tough loss, and yes without Nash, the pacers should have won the game. But I refuse to let the very end ruin the rest of the game and things that I believe can be used in future games. More on that in a little bit

      3. Make a decision, either rebuild completely or remain in mediocrity for years. Maybe it costs us Danny or Ike.

Actually, I could retract from trading Tins a bit, but JO must go. After all, Obie gave Tins the keys to the Pinto to try to win it by himself in OT (he took 10 of our 11 shots, and I counted 2 passes he made in OT), even though he ran the up tempo offense during the first 3.5 quarters very well.

Ongoing stat of the year: With JO we are 9-19, without him we are 5-2 (should have been 6-1, but Tins felt like going 1 on 5 last night in OT).

Re: Bitter thoughts after the loss to the Suns

I was at the Charlotte Bobcats versus pacers game on New years eve. And I see a very strong similarity to the end of this game. In that game we controlled the game pretty well, all the way to about half way through the 4th quarter and in overtime. What changed? Well we changed the offense completely when Charlotte made their surge and changed from what was working. We went to slog ball with Jermaine who like tinsley last night, DID NOT have a hot hand, as a matter of fact he could hit a damn shot. He had not played well most of the game, but for some reason we changed from everything that was working and eventually losing in overtime.

What is it about the close games that JOB decides to go away from what is working and let one of the players jump in and play selfish ball?

I think that it pissed Miller off a bit honestly... because before that point in time.. Miller had been talking of playing a few more years.. then that was said.. and he happens to say the hell with it and retire at the end of season...
That's not how it happened at all.

REGGIE was the one talking up JO being "the man" since the end of the 2001 playoff series with Philadelphia. Reggie retired four years later in 2005 for a combination of wanting to leave while he could still compete as a starter and IMO because that year the Brawl et al along with that roster in general wore him out. Now that last part is speculation by me, but the first part is not.

Re: Bitter thoughts after the loss to the Suns

Okay, I'll buy the idea that JOB was trying to eat up the shot/game clock by having Tinsley go iso and post-up his defender, BUT that DOESN'T excuse him taking 3-pt shots near the end of regulation, and it certainly doesn't excuse him from taking EVERY SHOT in OT. Granger, Dunleavy and even Murphy to a degree were playing well. Granted, we lost some of our flexability when Rush, Deiner, Williams and Foster all sat out due to injuries or fouling out, but there were still at least TWO gamers out there besides Tinsley. Moreover, if he was so tired the worse thing you do is allow him to force his shot or force the effort to post-up. In such situations what you need is a player who will attack the basket. Bring in Owens if you had to and instruct him and EVEYRONE ELSE to drive the lanes and get to the foul line.

No matter how one tries to rationalize it, there's just no excuse for the poor decision making down the stretch when you were leading w/under 4 minutes remaining.

Kester99, you know my 3-minute end-game rule. How 'bout repeating it to the board so everybody gets educated on how NOT to blow a game when you're still in it!!!

But I wonder if JOB was getting his 1st real look at Mel Mel the Abuser and kept thinking "well, he'll get it right next time down the floor....he'll realize what he's doing".

                No?
But that's just it, Geez. We still had Owens. And that's why I'm not buying fully into this "JOB was trying to slow the game down" argument. I was being sarcastic in my last post on the matter, but the truth is Owens was still available and he had fresh legs!! He's more of a half-court PG anyway (okay, so he's really a SG, but he's not that bad at the Point). Problem in going with him might have been he's not known to render very many assists, BUT he's more consistent from long range and he would have driven HARD to the lanes.

So, again, there's absolutely NO EXCUSE for what happened last night. NONE...no matter how folks try to justify it.

Re: Bitter thoughts after the loss to the Suns

What I don't for the life of all that is good understand is why Jamal was allowed to shoot 26 times while Dunleavy, who was having a solid shooting night, was only allowed 9 shots?

I'm totally disgusted in Coach O'Brien's judgment in the last 3 games. Granger, Dunleavy, and Shawne was shooting well but from the last 56 seconds on none of them were even looked at by Tinsley. After Jamal shot the ball 4 straight times without even attempting to look to pass early in the overtime I was praying for Andre Owens to be put into the game.

I'm also disgusted in the fluffy soft coverage of Mike Wells and Conrad Brunner. Neither articles in the Star or on Pacers.com even mentioned that Tinsley shot 8-26 or that he took every shot except one in OT. They both tried to put a completely positive spin on the game. I'm actually hoping for an article from just to breathe some levity on the Pacers poor play and coaching as of late. Thankfully, Clark Kellogg had the balls to question Jamal's shot selection and state that he the Pacers needed him to be more of a "point guard" in OT.

I haven't been that disappointed in a long time. Probably since the Pacers lost to the Hawks in the first round of the playoffs in 96.

Re: Bitter thoughts after the loss to the Suns

Diener hurt, and neither great options.

Big reason Rick was fired was for not getting along with Tins and making him better. Many people right here said that Rick was WRONG to try and control Tins, that Tins needed to be freed up to be himself.

Tins hated that Rick might dare control his style of play and ask him to run a pre-designed set, even if it was well thought out and geared toward attacking the current opponent or making the most of the talent the team had.

So this just gets me more and more bitter to be honest.

I will add this however, I do see some good structure to the defense. They have talent issues there, but what they are trying to do will look pretty good in the hands of other players.

Do NOT make the same mistake twice, don't throw out another pretty good coach in terms of strategy because he couldn't reach all of this roster or couldn't make his system work perfectly with this roster.

As much as I like Rick as a coach, I certainly don't hate what I've seen from JOB so far. Just fix the REAL PROBLEM, the roster. The same thing I was saying before Rick was dumped.

Reggie-JO - Reggie was correct to say that too. JO was the mack at that point, he drew fouls like a machine, rebounded aggressively and was a more threatening options than Reggie was becoming.

I'm sick of this stupid love affair some fans have with Reggie's final year. As a fan myself I loved seeing him, sure, but the dude was a HORRIBLE 3pt chucker that final season. JACKSON shot far better than Reggie that year, but Reggie took the most shots.

If it's any other name on the uniform shooting 4-5 3pt shots per game at a 32% rate fans get irate with the player.

So it was becoming JO's team. Then JO got hurt a bunch and now this version would get destroyed by the JO of just 3-4 years ago. Reggie wouldn't call it JO's team at this point.

I'll say this, while they were kid gloves too, Denari and Clark were "noticing" this issue during the game. It felt like if they were just hanging out with you that they would have been going off, but for the Pacers they played it soft.

Buck, he wasn't hitting them. One score was a Troy tip-in. And on all of those plays he didn't even look for a teammate, he clearly went full-on Mel Mel. Peck is right on ripping this, it was very forced offense, no natural flow to it at all, no real touches for teammates. Even his "well the clock was running out" long 3 was with 3 seconds left. He didn't even look to step in closer or anything. It wasn't a Jack moment of early in the clock, but considering where the shot was from it wasn't as smart as "clock running out" implies.

You are right that earlier he'd gone to the post effectively for some assists. But then it went to his head like it always seems to...or worse yet JOB told him to do this.

I'm of the opinion that JOB ripped on Tins for this back in the locker room.

If you are right here, and I have no way of knowing one way or the other, then I hope that as soone as Tinsley left from being ripped that Larry Bird was right in Jim O'Briens face ripping on him.

If he has no more control of the team than that then really where are we from last season?

Ok gang, it's been several hours now since I've watched the game and written this statement and if anything I am more bitter and mad now than I was then.

But I will try and add something positive to this.

I was very happy last night with Jeff Foster and Troy Murphy. I thought Troy played some of his best defense of the season last night and I thought Jeff was actually part of the offense other than just tipping the ball.

Ironically Troy couldn't shoot and Jeff was in foul trouble so they both weren't as affective as they normally are at their strengths.

Both were hitting the boards hard.

One more thing for Troy, he is gettting better and better every game at setting picks. Last night on a play in the 4th quarter he set a pick that actually took out two players from Phoenix.

Just another reason why I am still so p!ssed at O'Brien. He blew a great overall team effort by that one on one crap at the end of the game.

Diener had, by far, his best game of the regular season last night.

I have a feeling I am being blessed by not being able to see the games this season.

Troy still f-ed up the double team a couple of times, leading to easy lay-ups or offensive rebounds for the Suns.

There are some good posts in this thread. I especially liked Buck's 1st post. Those of you with pitchforks and torches in hand need to step back and go thru the other door labeled reality. The game plan in the overtime was obvious. The other four players on the floor cleared out and remained stationary. It's not like Jamaal just took it upon himself to do this and the rest of the team just happened to clear out for the final 5 minutes. The idea was for JT to take Marion every time. It didn't work. Jamaal should've hit a couple more of those shots but I have a feeling he was dead tired. JOB is gonna have Jamaal on the floor in those situations but this is where lack of depth hurts this team. They didn't have anyone to turn to earlier in the game after Diener went down. How anyone can expect a player to play the final 19 minutes in his second game back from injury and be the go to guy is beyond me.

This was one of the more exciting games this season even though it ended in a loss. It was fun to watch for the most part. I enjoyed the players JOB put on the floor and the pace of the game. I liked seeing Rush & Foster starting. Dunleavy had some great defensive plays down the stretch in regulation. Shawne Williams and Travis Diener broke out finally ( although I'm not sure if they were breaking out of slumps or JOB's doghouse). Turnovers were kept in check. Foster had some huge hustle plays and Troy did grab 15 boards. Granger played quietly but filled the stat sheet.

With all of that said, Jermaine O'Neal, Marquis Daniels & Ike Diogu are the three players that the Pacers should be focusing on when the phone rings in Larry's office.

                              Losing sucks. Go Pacers!
