Wow, love what Bird is saying. Agree with pretty much everything he said.

He is looking to make moves before the deadline. I think that is clear. He said they talk to people every day. He didn't say they are content with who they have. He says he likes the style that Jim has brought but they need to bring in guys who fit that style.

Feels that this team needs to defend and that they have several players that are inconsistant which has been the weaknesses of the team.

I really am amazed how upfront Bird was about making moves. He always says if they can make a move to get better they will do it but usually he might say they are pretty happy with what they have. He said nothing like that here.

I know that deals are hard to make. We have made ALOT of moves with this team over the past few years. But I really thought that we would keep this team together at least this season but I think that if Bird finds a deal he will pull the trigger before the deadline.

People need to listen to this. Bird is honest, at the very least. I loved when he basically admitted that Artest was better than JO in 04-05.

That was a nice interview. Larry said the most important things for a team in his mind are:

    1) A center who can score, hold his own, and block shots
    2) A power forward who can play the physical game who can guard people.
    3) A point guard who can distribute the ball and hit shots.

He said the wing players are in abundance and are easier to find.

I wish I could know what those trades were that Larry mentioned that, as far as he was concerned, were close to happening where at the last minute the team we were dealing with makes a similar move with another franchise instead.

I didn't listen to the link provided in this thread, but I heard most of the interview live on 1070.

The thing that struck me most was how LB did a lot of hemmimg and hawing when asked about O'Neal. The question was something like "where are you with JO" or "how happy are you with JO" or something like that. You could tell that he was being very careful about how he answered the question.

Larry Legend: "Probably our best player, Ronny Artest...he's really what Jermaine needs beside him...a tough guy"

Larry Legend: "I called Kevin McCale several times about Kevin Garnett..."

Larry Legend: "We need some Fosters. If we had a couple more of them, we'd be alright..."

    IMO, Larry thinks JO=Soft

    No kidding Larry.

Thank you. I enjoyed that very much. It proves that they are seeing the same issues we are seeing (or reading about).

Haven't listened to the interview yet but just reading this it sounds like what Larry wants is

    I like the dude's response: "I might drink a couple Foster's."

And just from listening to Larry's tone on Jermaine, dude will be packing in February.

    Other good stuff

On the 1998 squad: "We didn't have the footspeed to guard anyone...But we did it."

On JO's trade value being low right now: "There's no question about that."

On a campaign to get Slick in the HOF: "I'll help you with it. The Pacers wouldn't even be here if it wasn't for Slick."

On the question of "are you enjoying yourself?": "Overall I like it cause I'm learning so much. [But] today, no. A few days, no.

The losing hurts so much. I know what this state wants and what it stands for. I grew up here and I always loved the Pacers. I watched the telethon that Slick and Nancy had to save this franchise. It means a lot. It's tough, there's no question about it. It's one of the toughest things I ever did. The brawl probably took more out of me professionalwise [sic] than anything that's ever happened to me because I knew we were right there and we had the chance to do something special for the state. But it didn't happen so you move forward.

But it is tough. Do I have fun everyday. Absolutely not."

I thought that McHale sucked on the D and Parrish lacked scoring.

But if you mix and match qualities then there you go.

    Not at all.

McHale was 6-time All Defense. And Parrish could certainly work the block, although his best offensive attribute was probably his uncanny ability to finish.

Doesn't want to tank what little trade value JO has right now. BUT... JO isn't at full strength right now, so I think his value will improve as his health does.

Pretty much, yeah. Though I don't remember Rik blocking a lot of shots (though I remember him doing it somewhat).

Of course with those guys I think you need very good scoring wings to balance it and make it work (Reggie/Jalen, for example).

Kevin McHale was known as a physical defender?

Mchale was an excellent defender. He was very, very physical by todays standards, but back then, not really. He had the longest arms ever and was extremely smart.

    Couldn't Bird also mean:

    1. JO
    2. Jeff
    3. Tinsley

And so he thought we were set going into the season. Except he had no idea that JO had dropped off so much.

Great interview by Lawrence Joseph Bird! You know, JO already gets pissy when it comes to Larry Bird. How do you think he'll feel about LB agreeing that RonnieArt was the better player?

    JT can't shoot, so, no.

Apparently Bird just can't find a decent trade for the guys he wants to trade.

Interesting that he specifically mentioned PG, PF, and C as positions to improve. He didn't say we needed depth, he said we need the players.

There's no ifs, ands, or buts about it. He wants to replace Tinsley and O'Neal.
