Default The Dunleavy Comparison to Paul Westphal

As i was watching NBA TV and showed some Paul Westphal clips, i came to conclusion that Westphal plays the same way as Mike Dunleavy, though Mike might have more rebounds because of the height dis-advantage.

Paul Westphal is much faster tha Mike, but Mike has more range than he is.

Both Players are very Cerebral. Alwaay thinking while in game! Maybe both sometimes even think ahead too much.

I guess you can say that Paul Westphal was a much better player than him because he averaged more points on his breakout year and was an all-star but Mike Dunleavy is right there with him.

Here are Westphal's Stats in 6 years.

    1st year - ppg 4.1
    2nd year- ppg 7.2
    3rd year- ppg 9.8
    After the trade
    4th year -ppg 20.5
    5th year - ppg. 21.3
    6th year - ppg. 25.2

    Here are Mike's Stats

    1st year - ppg. 5.7
    2nd year -ppg. 11.7
    3rd year - ppg. 13.4
    4th year - ppg. 11.5
5th year before trade ppg 11.4
5th year after the trade ppg. 14.0
    6th year thru 35 games ppg 17.3

ok maybe stats may not be as similar and do not mirror each other, but both flourish after the trade as most players do.

back to my point, i really do think both players play the same way in the offense. Westphal might have played more of a 1 and 2 guard and scored much more than Mike, i see mike's potential lining up to Paul Westphal's.

In all honesty, i think Mike has more of an upside as him being a legit 6'9 player with good ballhandling and passing skills. But Paul Westphal was just a darn good player back then and was assertive with his hustles and scoring.

If mike ever get close to Paul Westphal's game, i will be a very Happy Pacers Fan.. as i know that would equal victory!!

what ya guys think?? wrong comparison or what?

Wow. That's a stretch. I guess what you're saying is that they are both white, so they are similar.

Then you go on to say Westphal is much faster than Dun.

Dun has more range than Westphal.

You say both are cerebral (did you mean to say, 'white'?)

Westphal was an All-Star. Dun is not.

Dun is 6-9, Westphal is 6-1.

Westphal played more 1 and 2 guard. Dun plays more 2 and 3.

You will be happy IF Dun ever gets close to Westphal's game...

so tell me, HOW does this make them similar?

I used to watch Paul Westphal's game all of the time.

I just don't see any similaryity at all between the two. Also where in the world are you coming up with the fact that Mike has more range than Paul?

Same here. As I remember, Westphal was a great shooter and fantastic scorer. Mike is more of an all around player and a playmaker

"cerebral player" belongs with "deceptively fast" and "hip-hop attitude" in the Sports Phrase Hall Of Shame, all for the same reasons.

There are games that Mike Dunleavy commits way too many turnovers as a result of boneheaded plays for him to ever be called a "smart" player. Most of the time AI is a "smarter" player than Dunleavy.

lol. i think i forgot to say what makes them similar huh?

by the similar, i meant the way they approach the game. not necessarily the way they play the game exactly, but the way they approach. its just so hard to find a comparison for Mike from players in the past.

and the range, i based it on not having three pointers back then and then westphal's 3p% and fg%.

as i said before. ive only seen a few clips and i asked at the end of the thread if its a wrong comparison.

eh for some reason when i saw his highlights and his attitude towards the game, i thought Mike Dunleavy! so yah

tnx for all the comments. i know its a stretch.

but if ever, who would you compare mike to??

Danny has Pip. so who is mike's?
