Default Korver for Giricek & pick

    FYI

    http://www.insidehoops.com/giricek-k...e-122907.shtml
Philadelphia 76ers President and General Manager Ed Stefanski announced today that the Sixers have acquired guard Gordan Giricek and a first-round pick from the Utah Jazz in exchange for guard Kyle Korver.

“We are excited about acquiring a player of Gordan’s ability, as well as an additional asset in the form of a first-round draft pick,” Stefanski said. “This move will provide us with increased salary cap flexibility this off-season and also allows us to continue our evaluation and development of the young talent we have on this team.”

In his sixth NBA season, Giricek has appeared in 350 games with 191 starts and has posted averages of 9.8 points, 2.5 rebounds and 1.5 assists in 23.6 minutes per game. This season, the 6’6”, 220-pound guard has played in 22 games and averaged 4.3 points and 1.7 rebounds in 12.7 minutes per game, while shooting 40.2% (40-104) from the field and 35.3% (12-34) from three-point range.

The Croatian native was acquired by the Jazz on February 19, 2004 from Orlando and appeared in 226 games for Utah, where he compiled averages of 8.9 points, 2.1 rebounds and 1.4 assists in 20.7 minutes per game.

Giricek played for the Croatian National Team in the 2005 European Championships and was named to the 2005 All-Eurobasket Second Team. He also competed in the 1998, 1999, 2000 and 2001 Croatian League All-Star Games (named MVP of the 1998 and 2000 All-Star Games). Additionally, he was named to the NBA All-Rookie Second Team and during the 2003 All-Star Weekend, he competed in the got Milk? Rookie Challenge and won the Rookie Hoopz Skills competition.

Currently in his fifth NBA season, Korver (6-7, 210, Creighton) has appeared in 337 regular season games, all with Philadelphia, and owns career averages of 10.5 points, 3.2 rebounds, 1.6 assists while hitting .409 from three-point range. He appeared in 25 games this season for the 76ers, averaging 10.0 points, 2.9 rebounds and 1.3 assists in 26.3 minutes.

Korver holds the 76ers franchise record for three-pointers made in a season (226 in 2004-05) and owns three of the franchise’s top-10 single-season marks for three-point accuracy. Korver also ranks second on the team’s career list for three-pointers made (661) and has twice been selected to participate in the NBA All-Star Weekend Three-Point Shootout.

Originally selected by the New Jersey Nets in the second round (51st overall pick) of the 2003 NBA Draft, Korver’s rights were traded to Philadelphia in a draft-night deal. Prior to his NBA career, the Lakewood, Calif., native played four years at Creighton University, where he finished as the school’s fifth all-time leading scorer.

“On behalf of the entire Sixers organization, I want to thank Kyle for the positive impact he has made on this team and the city of Philadelphia through his play on the court and, even more importantly, his philanthropic efforts off of it,” Stefanski said.

“We made a trade which we feel improves our team this year,” said Jazz general manager Kevin O’Connor.

InsideHoops.com editor says: The Jazz wanted Giricek to be a consistent shooting force. With this trade they upgrade to Korver, who actually is that. With Boozer inside, Deron Williams operating on one side of the floor, Korver can make it rain from three-point range on the opposite side. Good deal for the Jazz. As for the 76ers, they get rid of Korver's contract (over $4 million a year for several more seasons), which wasn't huge but was still more than they wanted to keep paying, and get Giricek (over $4 million but then a free agent this sumer) plus a first rounder. The first round pick makes it fair, because Korver is the better player. It makes it easier for the 76ers to rebuild. It makes the Jazz better right now. Therefore, I think it's a good trade for both teams

Huge coup for Utah. With two dead-eye assassins like Korver and Okur out on the floor at the same time, Deron and Boozer are gonna have even more of a field day around the paint.

Probably a good move for Philly, too, since they can stack some picks.

Darnit, I wanted Korver. Too bad. Now Utah is going to turn it around. You add a consistent dead eye with what they have, this was the ideal "tweak" move that will likely pay huge dividends.

Hopefully (or not) this improves Kyle's fantasy basketball numbers. On one hand, he's going to a team that wants and needs him, but on the other he's going to a better team where his minutes and stats could go down......

Korver is the perfect Utah player. They are scripting the Malone/Stockton/Hornacek days with Boozer/Williams/Korver. They should be fun to watch, especially as Morris Almond (Jeff Malone 2) develops.

They now have the most cap room next season of anyone. They'll have even more when they swap Andre Miller (Jason Williams makes a lot of sense, I'm guessing they're working on a three-way to get a little more out of it). Plus the draft pick. Good move for both teams.

Neither Phoenix nor Dallas nor Houston has looked impressive thus far, with a healthy Okur and some production from the two spot Utah are probably the second best team in the West. Remember, its not as though Giricek was a stopper, so they're not losing much on the defensive end, and they still have CJ miles at the 2 if Korver is getting killed. He'll probably also take some time AK47, and they can also go small with a Korver-AK-Boozer line up when Okur is out. I like their team.

I really like this trade for both teams.

The Jazz get the better player. Korver should fit in nicely with their ball club. I like their swingmen, all are good but give you a different style.

For the 76ers Giricek can be a productive player for them. Defiantly a bit of a downgrade from Kyle but when they have Williams, Willie Green, Young, and Iggy certainly Kyle was expandable and getting a 1rst round draft pick is a nice asset to have.

Dallas hasn't been impressive, but they are still winning ball games. I wouldnt sleep on the big D. Utah, was nice last year cause they had Derek Fisher. They need a veteran PG if they want to make noise, maybe they should look to Houston and steal one of theirs!!

Hornacek >! Korver (yeah, I know you could do that with all three, but Hornacek was not only a very good rebounder and passer, but he could score while being the #1 option on a playoff team. I'd like to see Korver do that.)

I'll be interesting to see how Korver adapts. Yes, he'll get open looks with Williams and Boozer out there, but, regadless of his shooting, he's never struck me as a mentally tough player, and that won't sit well with Sloan.

philly does nicely here. imo, korver maxes out as a specialist. he's replaceable down the road.

right now, philly is the only team with significant cap space in the summer of 2008. that gives them a shot at an intriguing group of restricted free agents. guys like okafor, deng, josh smith, i think their teams will match no matter what. but philly will have a chance at guys like jose calderon, ben gordon or monta ellis.

kudos to philly for not being fooled by their surprisingly good record currently. their key will be the summer rebuilding.

Does the Jazz really need anything more than a specialist? Especially a three-pt specialist? Denver's been looking for that for years.

I don't know, is that pick really going to give Philly what they need? To me this is turning into a long haul rebuild for several more years.

Korver's no star but what he did he did at the top level of NBA players. Iggy is young and is your go-to. Right now you still have a spry Dre. To me this team just needs one more top pick, which they are going to get on their own, and perhaps a vet along the front line.

Utah wins big. They love to have bigs work the outside and KK will easily be able to pick n fade with guys like Okur or Deron and get great looks. I don't know if this solves their overall issues, but it sure doesn't hurt.

Of course our Neuromancer-loving friend has a point, this does give them quality cap space which could help in adding perhaps that vet starter-caliber player.

The 76ers just have so many guys on the wingswho have yet to peak where with Korver I think he is as good as he will get. I think that KK made the most sense for them to move right now.

GGs solid, the cap space will be nice, and maybe they can make good use out of that pick. I think that Philly got good value. I think it made perfect sense for them. I dont think it sets them back much if any in the win column.

Okay, good view. I hadn't thought of the "holding others back" angle.

He's also nothing more than a role player. The Sixers are in the beginning of a major rebuild and they know they aren't going anywhere until at least 09-10. There's really no reason to have a specialist around. And even though his contract is reasonable, it was still on the books for the next 3-4 years.

To me, this deal was: "Something Philly didn't need/want for an asset (late 1st Round pick) and more cap room"

And for Utah it was: "A marginally useful asset (pick) and someone we don't like/need for a specialist with a good contract that will fit perfectly into our offense"

    Good for both.
