Thread: 'puter help- wife's laptop has recurring "blue screen of death"

Default 'puter help- wife's laptop has recurring "blue screen of death"

I can start in "last good configuration"

    I have

    -run spyware/adware cleanups
    -cleaned the registry (CCleaner)
-run the other CCleaner disk cleanup stuff to deleted unnecessary stuff
    -uninstalled everything unnecessary

It's a 2 1/2 year old compaq/HP so I don't really want to pay 100 bucks to fix it when $400 would probably replace it with something better.

After doing all of the above, it now "sometimes" reboots without going to the death screen, but it still happens occasionally.

There is ample hard disk space, but I am running a disk check now and may do a defrag later.

Any thoughts, other than pitch it in the garbage?

I agree it would help to know what error shows on the BSOD, but if you have done all that stuff to it already, why not just wipe the drive to zeros and reinstall windows? Kind of a pain in the ***, but I do it to my pc's about once a year or so.......It is possible that the error is hardware related, so that is the only reason I wondered what error it was giving...

    windows xp home edition

    stop error: 0x0000007

Cleaning the registry and deleting stuff has helped. It doesn't happen every time now, but does happen 20% of the time or so. I'm doing a disk defrag now.

Yeah I'd consider reformatting your drive and see if that helps. Wiping it clean may do that

I've had recent PC trouble this past summer, and it turns out my hard drive had gone bad. I kept getting the blue screen of death, and if I was lucky enough to start up XP, it'd eventually just freeze. I simply had to get a new one (hard drive), install it and re-install XP. I lost everything on my hard drive for the most part.

But, I did save some stuff.

That may be a problem, though. Faulty hardware.

I think that I resolved it by the spyware removal, registry cleaner, disk cleaner, and hard disk defragmenting.

Last 10-15 reboots in a row--- no BSOD!

    Well done.

It still might be worthwhile to re-install Windows. I do that about once per year on my Windows machines. Or upgrade to Ubuntu.
Welcome to Pacers Digest! New around here? Here are three tips for making the forum a great place to talk about Pacers basketball.

    • Log in. Even if you want to read instead of post, it's helpful because it lets you:
    • Change your signature options. You can hide all signatures by choosing "Settings" (top right) then "General Settings" (middle left) and unchecking the box "Show Signatures" (in the "Thread Display Options" area).
    • Create an ignore list. I know it may seem unneighborly. But you're here to talk about the Pacers, not argue with someone who's just looking for an argument. Most of the regular users on here make use (at least occasionally) of the "Ignore" feature. Just go to "Settings" -> "Edit Ignore List" and add the names.

    Enjoy your time at PD!

Nuntius was right. I was wrong. Frank Vogel has retained his job.
