Default Could Yi Jianlian be an All Star starter

We touched upon the All Star game during the Perkins portion of our forum party, but Yi wasn't mentioned as a possible All Star.

I doubt the coaches vote him on but he does have a pretty hefty fan base in China. Could his Chinese fans vote him in as a starter?

It wasn't about being the team everyone loved, it was about beating the teams everyone else loved.

If that happens, I don't care, I'd be all for taking that away from the fans. Period.

the thing is, He wouldn't even be the least deserving all-star ever. Kobe forever holds that distinction in 1997.

I hope it happens for that very reason, pf46. It's a joke already.

I was watching as I walked to my seat Tuesday as a family of four sat down at a table with STACKS of All-Star ballots. They were filling in HUNDREDS of ballots. I'm sure this happens everywhere.

There was even an incentive given to do this. First X people who turned in so many HUNDRED ballots got a free Granger t-shirt.

Yet we use the # of all-star appearances a player has as a reason they're better than someone else. It's a joke.

%98 of all-star appearances are legit. It's the one undeserving guy that gets voted in once every 4-5 years or so that raises the questions.

They're still a valid source for arguing a player's value, they just can't tell the whole story.

If a guy's good enough, the coaches will eventually vote him in.

Most are worthy, true, but popularity may play a role in who gets voted in over who from a pool of worthy people, and I bet there's been times where a better worthy player got shafted by this. Thinking of all of Vince Carter's appearances come to mind.

yeah, but as I said, if you're really deserving, your time will eventually come. Sam Cassell is a perfect example of this.

I don't shed a tear for a guy that had one or two good seasons and got shafted. If you were only good enough to be borderline for 1-2 years, you probably don't deserve the recognition anyway.

OK, just for argument's sake, let's say Yi does get voted in.

    C: Howard
    F: Yi
    F: James
    G: Wade
    G: Kidd

Then you have a bench of

    Garnett
    Allen
    Pierce
    Billups
    Redd
    Bosh

That's 11 guys, with Granger, Gerald Wallace, Josh Smith, Okafor, Jamison, Deng and Jefferson all going for one spot.

However, the injury to Gilbert Arenas creates that open spot, allowing one of those guys to take it.

Everything evens out in the end. Even if Yi gets voted in, nobody gets snubbed.

I disagree, I think that Shaq should have missed a few here recently. Howard should have gotten it.

Duncan should not have gotten it over Boozer or Dirk last year.

MLB is wack too. But lets just say it. The All-Star game does not mean a single thing.

I contend that there have been more spot opened up by injuries in the last 10 years than spots taken up by undeserved starters voted in by fans.

He's getting in this year, isn't he?

Once again, Boozer gets in this year no question.

The all-star game is a fan's game. If you are truly deserving of a spot, the coaches will make sure you get it. Last year, because of all the injuries, a bunch of guys got in that did not really deserve it (well, at least not as much as the guys whose spots they took).

It's the All-Star game, no point in really getting your panties in a bunch in my opinion.

If you make it you make it. If not you can take a week off and go to your beach house in Jamaica. I don't really think the players care all that much.

Indiana fans are defensive about this because of all the people who say "Reggie Miller only had a few All-Star appearances and only started one" as a reason to keep Reggie out of the Hall of Fame.

The fact that he only had five all-star appearances is legit as a something against Reggie.

The fact that he only started one game is not.

If Chinese people wanna watch him play, then let him play. It's not like the All Star game has ever been much of a meritocracy anyway. And it's certainly no worse than the little kids that have made Vince Carter an 8-time All Star because they like dinosaurs and flying men.

    Although it is pretty dumb.

Well Reggie, could never start, cause of some Jordan dude, and Penny Hardaway stole a spot practically every year in Reggie's prime, Glen Rice made a couple, and some others sprinkled in there.
"It's just unfortunate that we've been penalized so much this year and nothing has happened to the Pistons, the Palace or the city of Detroit," he said. "It's almost like it's always our fault. The league knows it. They should be ashamed of themselves to let the security be as lax as it is around here."

Glen Rice was a guard? That's news.

I'll agree he got screwed by BJ Armstrong in 1994, but that's it.

For me when I vote I do not vote on past experience or career. It is the 2008 All-Star game. Not the 2008 and those who deserved it last year. but I understand that as long as they are consistent sooner or later they will be one.
