Default The "holy crap we suddenly have WR depth issues" thread

I agree with those who say that Marvin Harrison will probably be hanging out in Boca Raton instead of Terre Haute next summer because of his age and this torn PCL business. It's a real damn shame, and it will definately be an emotional Ring of Honor ceremony next year.

I don't mean to move swiftly on from the many memories Marvin has given us over the years but we're really going to have to address some wide receiver depth issues next year. It's obvious that Reggie Wayne is the unquestioned #1- thank God he was resigned.

After that there are some serious question marks. On Colts.com Aaron Moorehead is listed as our second reciever. The big pro of Moorehead is that he's been around for awhile and he really knows the offense, but the con is, sadly, he hasn't proven to be that great even with Peyton throwing to him. Our slot reciever right now is Anthony Gonzalez, who I want to like so bad but he hasn't shown any flashes of brilliance all year. The good news about Gonzalez is he is likely to match Wayne's rookie year numbers, so his future could indeed be bright.

The Colts are not often a team to bring in quick fix free agents. However, with the serious firepower NE has attained it might be necessary to try to attract a big name WR here. What do you guys generally think about that, and if you're positive, who do you think we could bring in? Is there anyone particular on your wish list?

I thought that this would be an interesting topic to start off, have fun...

I was kind of hoping that we would have got Chris Chambers.

Sucks that we won't have our first round draft pick this year. But oh well.

I'm not really for sure who will even be free agents. I'm sure Bill Polian will find someone suitable though.

It's funny you used 'holy crap' as your thread title, because Craphonso Thorpe may be the one stepping into a bigger role off the practice squad.

The Colts waived T.J. Rushing last week.

A torn PCL isn't that big of a deal. Take care of that in the off-season, and I reckon Marv has a couple of years left. He's been fairly healthy his whole career, so his legs are probably in better shape than most 35 year old receivers. Marvin won't quit until he wants to quit. He's not going to go out like this. Bank on it.

    God I hope you're right.

For a nobody, Craphonso looked good out there tonight. Probably about as good as Moorehead, who has been on the team for years now.

haha, I thought about that as well. I think he will be playing at IU one more year though. He isn't listed in any mock drafts that I have seen.

I think our first round draft pick this year will be a WR again...

Which was exactly what we needed to do.

    exactly.

people are also forgetting we drafted a receiver this year. i don't think we expected marvin to go down for the season (or career) like this but we drafted gonzales so we could groom him for when marvin was finished. the problem really is for this season - which is going to be hard to do anything about really.
    This is the darkest timeline.

I agree with you, but it still sucks to not have a first round pick.

Yes he did. Moorehead is terrible. Thorpe was pretty good in college but he broke his leg pretty bad which de-railed him for awhile, IIRC.

What you've seen is about correct. If he's only average in the Colts offense, think how bad he would be on an offensively challenged team like the Vikings or the Ravens.

I will actually disagree with this. For whatever reason, Tony has not gotten lots of touches. But most of the time I have seen Gonzalez make a catch, it has been an important down and a very tough catch. But just when I think he has earned some touches... the ball never seems to come back to him.

It could be that he isn't getting open, but more than likely he is still a pretty small fish in the pond out there. He comes from a solid program and I think he has made much tougher catches than we saw Thorpe make last night. I think Thorpe did fine last night, but he didn't have to make lots of tough grabs.

I haven't made up my mind yet on Moorehead. The one good hookup opportunity he had last night was clearly pass interference on the defense. But you also have to think that some of the interceptions are the result of Peyton and him not being in synch. He either is running the wrong routes, not coming back, or something...

Believe it or not he could be on our radar if he does come out, and we could steal him late. Peyton with a 6'7 reciever. I LOVE IT I LOVE IT I LOVE IT.

Had a nasty collision on special teams against Houston and did something to his shoulder, he's on IR. The guy he was in the collision with got carried off on a stretcher.

I'd like to see a John Standeford sighting.
