Default 07-08 Random NBA thoughts episode IV: A New Season

Season tips off tonight with three games, and the best matchup is the one not on TNT.

Oh well, It's good to have the NBA back again.

Standard rules apply, this is supposed to be a thread on random observations made from around the NBA. No rules against posting anything pacers-related, it's just meant to get people thinking outside the box, or posting random NBA tidbits that really don't deserve their own threads.

I'm somewhat anxious to see what the Warriors look like this year with Belinelli instead of J-Rich. He was an erratic shooter yes, but he also provided them with very good rebounding and defense from the swing spot.

Why can't we get Portland off the air? Can't they renegotiate the TV deal with Oden down?

TNT isn't going to slight the Blazers like that on opening night. You can do that in the middle of the season and nobody will care, but not on opening night. Not to mention the fact they'd be slighting the Spurs' ring ceremony.

Besides, there aren't any other games on at 8pm to replace them with...

In other words, you'll get your Roy/Manu matchup and you'll like it.

I really think the Warriors will be hurting without Jason. However Baron, Stephen, Al, etc is still a very talented group.

Anxious to see how the Hawks play. I don't expect them to make the playoffs but they have a really young and VERY talented team with some experience. I think a couple of their guys could have big years for them and make some noise.

Also curious how Houston does. I'm a pretty big fan of Rick Aldeman and I think that he will make a great coach for the Rockets. I like the Princeton offense and I think they can do well with it.

According to Yahoo, http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/news?slu...yhoo&type=lgns, Duncan's willing to sign an extension below market value.

Everyone knows how good Duncan is, but he still gets overlooked by a lot of people. He's so underrated in so many aspects besides his game.

Yeah, you're certainly right about the best matchup being the one not on national TV, but at least those of us with League Pass don't have to worry.

I'd expect Belinelli to see relatively limited time for a while, Kelenna and Monta pretty much hold down the reigns at the 2 for the moment. Belinelli has struggled in his perimeter shooting a bit lately and it's by far his greatest skill. Otherwise he's too much of a liability to put out there against a team that is as efficient and fundamentally solid as the Jazz. His playmaking ability is quite solid as well, but he rarely gets past the mentality of a long-range gunner and doesn't set up his teammates as much as he ideally could.

That said, it's still incredibly early in his career and I expect him to learn a lot as the season progresses.

As weird as this may sound to some people, the principal way in which J-Rich will be missed is simply his presence in the locker room and the relationships he had with the other players. That said, his defense was awful and although his rebounding was always great for a swingman, the Warriors aren't looking to outrebound teams. Azubuike is pretty much a better overall version of Jason, who last year was relegated to a jump shooter who got his opportunities from what Baron and Jack threw his way. Otherwise, the Warriors will be absolutely fine without him on the court.

And I don't really anticipate the first 7 games (5 against playoff teams nonetheless) to be a smooth stretch for Golden State. Playing without Jack on the court hurts enough, but without him being able to be on the bench and coaching the other players hurts almost as much.

I agree, the game tonight I would like to watch the most is the Warriors vs Jazz. And as of right now I don't have LP, so I'm going to rely on TNT and ESPN

Duncan's willing to accept "only" $20 million per season to stay with a 4-time NBA champion. Wow, what a trooper...

I forgot all about that. That just made my day.

This is the first season that I don't have LP to start the season since 1995. I'll be getting it after I move, but probably until mid December I won't have it. When do they drop the price?

I'm excited now! I can watch the Jazz beat the Warriors tonight.

Don't forget TNT has their hour long preview tonight at 7:00 - really this is the first time I've been excited for the NBA season

The Jazz beat the Warriors 4-1 last year when it counted. That same Jazz team is in tact, yet the Warriors are playing without 2 of their 3 best players from that series and are starting Mickael Pietrus at the 4, to go against Carlos Boozer.

I'd be shocked if the Dubs win tonight.

I was poking fun at a bet UB made with a certain banned poster during the Mavs-Warriors series last year.

Oh yeah, damn I forgot about that, lol.

And Wright tweaked his back, but even if he was 100% probably wouldn't get any minutes yet.

The Warriors will be fun to watch this year, but like last year they'll be pretenders in May. Eventually they'll find someone that can beat them up in the paint and minimize their mistakes, and the warriors will eventually take themselves out with their horrible shot selection.

But hey, I won't lie that they're a nice change of pace on a tuesday night...

Wow, those braces really did the trick. Reggie's lower-teeth are all straight now. Looks like he may have one of those transparent braces on his upper teeth (he was talking slightly funny and his teeth were a little too shiny/reflective). Kind of bizarre after seeing/knowing Reggie with the teeth God gave him for all those years.
