Default Put it on the line: What will be our EC rank this season?

So we don't have to deal with everybody saying "I told you so" later (unless they actually did tell us so). No caveats, except that we assume the team we have is the team we take into the start of the season. You can assume mid-season trades if you want.

Welcome to Pacers Digest! New around here? Here are three tips for making the forum a great place to talk about Pacers basketball.

    • Log in. Even if you want to read instead of post, it's helpful because it lets you:
    • Change your signature options. You can hide all signatures by choosing "Settings" (top right) then "General Settings" (middle left) and unchecking the box "Show Signatures" (in the "Thread Display Options" area).
    • Create an ignore list. I know it may seem unneighborly. But you're here to talk about the Pacers, not argue with someone who's just looking for an argument. Most of the regular users on here make use (at least occasionally) of the "Ignore" feature. Just go to "Settings" -> "Edit Ignore List" and add the names.

I am unsure of what will happen with these season, but I'll give you my bold, sunny prediction: 7th, and we'll knock off the 2 seed in the playoffs before losing in the second round.

Assuming Marquis stays healthy and Rush does anything.

I imagine you'll all be praising me or throwing tomatoes at me in half a year, but whatever.

    My prediction:

We start out somewhere between bad and .500, and by Jan/Feb we're playing like a high-seed playoff team.

I think they will have first round home court advantage.

    Ok, logically now.

Teams that will almost definitely be better than us:
    Boston
    Detroit
    Cleveland
    Chicago

So I don't think we'll be better than five.

Now, I don't see how we're better than these teams either:
    Orlando
    Washington
    New Jersey
    Toronto

Those are my playoff teams. So that puts us at no better than 9.

    Here's where things get tricky.

Miami and New York are wild cards. There are A LOT of factors there. Both teams could get lucky and things could work out...or not.

Charlotte and Atlanta are really looking like they are putting things together. I think Charlotte could contend for the playoffs and Atlanta is going to sneak up on people.

    That's four more teams.

Milwaukee is talented and had some injuries last year. They could also improve.

I just don't like that 76ers team and I think we'll definitely be better than them.

I'll say 11. The aforementioned playoff teams, Miami, and Charlotte beat us out.

I could see us possibly being better than Orlando and/or Toronto. I don't see Charlotte contending for a playoff spot this season, but I think the Hawks could be a wild card, along with the Knicks. I have Miami in the playoffs.

I put us at number 7 before I realized that the East is pretty decent this year.
Now I'm starting to regret that. Good analysis rexnom.

I think that we'll squeak into the playoffs, and I do think that the team will generally play better than expected.

But I just don't expect JO, Marquis, and Tins to all be healthy for the majority of the season. And if we're without one or two of those three for an extended period, we'll be in trouble.

Dude, Toronto went 47-35 last year (third seed) while we went 35-47. They didn't make any huge moves, but they're still a very solid team. I don't see what makes you think we'll be better than them.

And Orlando's offseason wasn't bad either. Yeah, they'll regret paying Rashard in a year or two, but he's a pretty big upgrade over Granger. Plus they've got Dwight Howard against our Jermaine O'Neal. The rest of the team is pretty bad, so I could see us passing them, but it's not open and shut.

If we're between 9 and 12 I'll want to impale myself at the end of the season. If we are bad, I want us to be really bad so that we at least get a good draft pick.

I think some of you guys are over-ratin' the other teams just as much as under-ratin' the Pacers...

I say we'll be 6th or better. For the sake of the poll, I said 6th. I really like the depth and balance of our squad.

I think Sam Mitchell is very overrated, and Toronto vastly overachieved last year. Teams aren't always better, or even the same, if they basically stand pat over the offseason (just look at the Bears, Saints, and Chargers in the NFL for example). Plus, their division just got much better this offseason.

Orlando barely beat us out for the last playoff spot last season with us tanking our brains out. They added Rashard, but don't underestimate them losing Grant Hill as well.

I was there at about 6. After the top three or four teams, it's a crap shoot. Remember the year when we went in the toilet in the early 90's and the next year it turned around quickly with pretty much the same core of players and an added few role players with a new coaching staff? We could be somewhere in the mid 40's in the win column.
