    Default New starter at DT

    THEIR TIME IS NOW

    By John Oehser - Colts.com

Johnson, Gonzalez Ready for first NFL Action
    INDIANAPOLIS

Times changes fast in the NFL.
    One month, a guys an unknown . . .

The next, hes an NFL starter.

And around the Colts, a player even a young player has to be ready whenever he is needed, and whenever opportunities arise.

Such is the case for Ed Johnson, a defensive tackle for the Colts.

When training camp began six weeks ago, he was an unknown, un-drafted free agent trying to make an NFL team. Now, hes a starting defensive tackle for the team that won the Super Bowl following last season. ...

Well, hopefully Johnson will be the stud DT the team needs. He's 6'2" and 296 lbs. He's the second biggest DT on the depth chart, after Quinn Pitcock (6'2" 299) who's the third string guy. I haven't caught much of the pre-season, and what I have, I watched the LBs and DBs. Can anyone shed some light on the Big Johnson?

I watched all of the pre-season games and one thing I can say about this guy is he has a non-stop motor. He had 2 sacks in the 1st game against Dallas and several pressures and throughout the pre-season he seems to shed blocks well in the run game and really gets after the ball carrier. He is very fast off the snap. I guess the only down side of him is he had work ethic questions at penn. st. and didn't seem to try all the time if I remember correctly. I am by no means an expert, but he has certainly stood out in a good way these first 4 games.

I expect Pitcock to be starting by week 8, but If I'm wrong that's a good thing.

From reading some stuff about Johnson, I don't think it is quite as surprising as it first seemed that he leapt up the depth chart. It sounds like he always had first round talent, but the disciplinary issues left him undrafted. Scout.com stated that he was custom-made for the cover 2, as a one gap tackle due to his quickness. Thank God once again for our scouting department!

Well, I'd say he looked pretty good in the opener.

But, then, so did everyone else.
