    Thanks for all the work.

Sounds like option 2 is our best bet.

As Displaced Knick mentione above, the KL draft will be no biggie. Its just 3 rounds anyway. Theres seldom a trade in the KL but if we have one I'm sure it can be figured out.

If we don't get the ABA back up this fall at least we'll have something to build on down the road.
Yeah - IMO there are only 2 things the league itself has to do - set up matchups and calculate game scores. We can use this board as our trash talk page (be nice if we could get a special dispensation for 4-letter words but that's OK - I'll be nice to Scott if I HAVE to).

The KL is a different breed of cat - I can't tell you how impressed I am with the owners. The ABA's very good but the KL owners go a step above.

I don't think owners will be terribly upset if there isn't a player stats page - sports.ws didn't have one for a year or two. I think we're all able to calculate stats when considering trade deals/waiver pickups.

I do think we should have 3-4 people willing to enter trades and even manually update standings if we have to. Simple fact of from time to time I'll need to be gone for a few days at a time, particularly around Thanksgiving and this coming spring looks like several days in March. We'll have to figure out a schedule for who is "on duty" and a time for owners to expect those updates to be put in.

Unfortunately, I'm for crap when it comes to database management and scripting/coding. I can do simple html so if standings was a matter of updating and uploading a page I'm good - same for trade and roster pages. And teaching others, or putting together a template page for those wouldn't be a big deal.

I'm sure we'll talk details down the road but I am psyched - we can make this work.

OK for those of you wanting to stay in the loop, the downtime and outages announced on the front page are so I can make some system alterations and disksize alterations for the setup of the oracle database software.

    just so you know :P

This is really great news. I'm looking forward to getting the old system back. Could do without the swearing, but I guess I'll have to look past it.

It actually has to do with the calling I have just answered, which is to go into the ministry. I start classes in November. I am having to do a lot of evaluation about what priority I give things in life now, but I should be able to give this the attention it deserves. If not, I will let Rim know and step away from it if that is what needs to happen.

That decision would not be because of all of you, but rather how I have to prioritize my time. I will still be around, I'm just not sure how much yet.

tuut tuut is there anyone here who has a database of A: players and B:teams ?

(i.e. all players in the nba and all teams though the latter is less important)

(and players pref with pos, but that is not a "need")

the sooner the better : ) when this is in the databse I can start working on the algorythms

I don't anything current. Well, I could probably dump my "teams" table. That hasn't changed.

I can dump my players table, but that won't match what the NBA has. I had to do a fair bit of "work" to match what nba.com uses with what sports.ws used.

The best solution is to pull the player list from the site you are planning on pulling the stats from. That way it's a little easier to match the stats to the right player.

Pulling the XML from http://www.nba.com/players/ and extracting all elements with class="thePlayers" will give you the players and their names. The text of the node looks like "Last, First" and the href attribute contains the URL of the players information page.

Alternatively you can spin through the roster pages for each team http://www.nba.com/teamname/roster looking for elements with class=gSGPlayerLink which will give you the player URL and their name in "First Last". Their position is in the same HTML row, so you could probably get those, too.

I don't know if I will have time to do all of that myself - I know you need help and would help if I could. I'm still swamped though, mainly with football right now.

Isn't it always 1 keeper league and 1 "fresh" ABA league?

    Status report:

    input page ready, nba_teams ready
    nba_players ready
    input page players ready
    input page teams ready
    change team ready

except for the data asked above most of the "base" is done.
We are now thinking about the schedule (formula to create that) and the input of the NBA schedule (which I have complete)

once that is done we can create the score pages, for which the formula's are worked out.

leaves the parsing of the records after that

Looks like we will be good for dummy run in about 2 weeks
