    Default Booger McFarland Down

Time to hit the Xanax. All I can say is &*@#$%% and *)(%$#@!

    http://blogs.indystar.com/philb/

    Uh-oh. Here we go again?

Don't know if it's true, so don't blame me for mentioning this, but a local TV station has reported Anthony "Booger" McFarland has a serious knee injury. The station cited "two sources." I've heard second-hand that it's true.
The Colts have no comment, per team policy on not responding to such media reports. I've called and emailed some agents to try to find out the truth. No word. We know that McFarland had a magnetic resonance imaging test (MRI). That's about it.

It would obviously be a huge blow if McFarland is gone for a lengthy amount of time, not to mention the season. And not that the timing of such things could ever be good, but the Colts just released another defensive tackle, Corey Simon, who had a knee injury in camp last season and ended up not playing. As a colleague said to me, this could be like losing 650 pounds of run-plugging might in just two days.

So if we arrive at camp on Monday - barring my call to jury duty - and hear that McFarland needs surgery, as Simon did, it will be human nature to fear the worst. Can the Colts win without him? Sure. But a defense that is already replacing three starters with presumably capable replacements could be hurting if they lose this one. McFarland is the anchor of the run defense. The Colts would probably need to go out and get some help, unless they think rookie seventh-round pick Keyunta Dawson can fill in at tackle. That's a lot to ask of a pass rusher whose listed weight is 254 pounds.

Maybe it's all media hype and nothing more. We shall see. But for now, keep your fingers crossed, Colts fans. This is one story you hope is flat out wrong.
Bring on Ramel Meekins, I suppose.

Yeah I heard about this, but this is only one news station that's reported this. Until I hear directly from other sources, I'll take a wait and see approach

    Colts' McFarland may miss season
    By Mike Chappell

The Indianapolis Colts might have to mount their Super Bowl defense without a big part of their defense -- tackle Anthony McFarland.
According to multiple sources, McFarland has informed teammates and close friends he suffered a serious knee injury in a training camp practice Friday at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in Terre Haute. It's believed he tore a patella tendon, which likely would be season-ending.
Neither McFarland nor his agent, Karl Bernard, could be reached for comment. The Colts also had no comment when contacted Sunday afternoon. Saturday, coach Tony Dungy said McFarland was one of several players who underwent a magnetic resonance imaging test in Indianapolis.

Dungy described the procedure as "precautionary," but the damage apparently was severe.

Losing McFarland, 29 and in his ninth season, would be a substantial blow to the Colts' defense. The unit was instrumental in the team capturing its first world championship in 36 years, but ranked last in the league against the run during the regular season.

Even with the 300-pound McFarland anchoring the middle of the defense, the Colts allowed 173 rushing yards per game and 5.3 yards per attempt.

McFarland's loss comes on the heels of the team terminating the contract of veteran defensive tackle Corey Simon. Ironically, McFarland's injury occurred almost a year to the day Simon suffered an injury to his right knee that required surgery and contributed to him missing the entire season.

The Colts acquired McFarland last October in a trade with Tampa Bay, sending the Bucs a second-round draft pick.

With McFarland out of the mix, the interior of the defensive line loses experience and bulk. Raheem Brock returns for his second season as a starter, but the depth behind him includes Darrell Reid, Dan Klecko, Quinn Pitcock and Keyunta Dawson. Reid and Klecko have appeared in a total of 62 regular-season games, but only four as starters. Pitcock was a third-round pick in the April draft who missed the first week of training camp with a leg injury while Dawson is a seventh-round draft pick.

We'll bring somebody in and we will manage. This definitely sucks, but I think we should be fine.

Wow, The Colts defense is going to be awful this year. If they actually step up and aren't one of the worst defenses in the league..Dungy should win COY.

Is it a bad thing that since we won the Super Bowl already I can't get too worked up about this?

Yes. Some of us don't have a good NBA team to look forward to.

IMO this is worse than losing Glenn for many reasons. We'll roll out juggernaut offense no matter what, but Booger really brought some swagger to the D.

They had a lot of problems last year as well. Remember, our starting DT's were projected to be Montae Ragor and Corey Simon last year, but they both went out. We still managed to beat New England for the third straight time.

The Colts run D needed upgrading anyway... and that was before Booger went down with the injury. Granted Booger was the best at stopping the gap, the Colts run D was terrible untill the playoffs started.

Hopefully, they can swing another trade for a veteran to fill the spot.

Raheem Brock will be at one tackle and perhaps Darrel Reid, Quinn Pitcock, Keyunta Dawson (254lbs) Dan Klecko, Ramel Meekins or mystery meat?

I think with Tarik's capspace along with whatever remains if any after everyone else is signed, they will swing at least one deal or signing. Perhaps sometime between the first cuts and the end of preseason.
