Default Star: Armstrong doesn't want to rebuild

    http://www.indystar.com/apps/pbcs.dl...73/1247/SPORTS

He also doesn't know what is going on regarding his stay here.

Armstrong, who averaged 5.6 points and 2.4 assists in 81 games last season, has a non-guaranteed contract with the Pacers. He said he's looking for a guaranteed contract and he's also keeping an eye on Jermaine O'Neal's future with the team.

"I've got to have a guaranteed contract just because of the way I play. Not only in games, but I also get after it in practice," the 39-year-old said. "I wouldn't mind coming back to Indiana. My issue is whether Jermaine O'Neal will be here. Will Jamaal Tinsley be here? I don't want to rebuild. I've rebuilt before."

Armstrong could be squeezed out because the Pacers signed both Travis Diener to back up Tinsley and Andre Owens to a partially-guaranteed deal. Marquis Daniels also is expected to play some point guard.

"I've got some interest from other teams," Armstrong said without revealing names. "We're just trying to see what the best interest is for me. I can still play. I'm not worried about that. I'm just going to sit back and wait."
So does this merit Army's membership in the "Friends of Mel Mel", MR?

"I don't want to rebuild. I've rebuilt before."

    Neither would I if:

    1. I was 39.
    2. On the Pacers.
    3. If I had done it before.
    4. If the team just signed 2 more point guards - Diener and Owens, and Quis coming back from injury.

That makes him what the 4th or 5th string PG.

Its a pretty generic statement if you ask me. No one (player) wants to rebuild. The fact that he added Tinsley in the quote is bogus, and only proves to me that he just wants out of Indiana - like a lot of players these days, unfortunately.

He wants a ring (just like anybody else), and he knows it ain't happening here anytime soon. Coming here last year, he legitimately had a chance at making a run, before the big trade.

I don't mind DA as a player...and would resign him as a 4th option PG....but if he wants to go...I won't lose sleep over it.

Especially with that horrible 3pt shot of his....oyyy.....I can only imagine how many 3pt shots he would miss.

This is David West, he is the Honey Badger, West just doesn't give a *****....he's pretty bad *ss cuz he has no regard for any other Player or Team whatsoever.

We never had any intention of re-signing DA.

I don't see him behind Owens, and even Diener is iffy.

This from the #1 member in the "calm down people, Army is not all that" club. I hated him forcing his 3 and gambling on D, but he was a competent bench PG. I just got sick of the "he should start" crowd which was a ludicrous idea. If they decide to keep him I'd be for it, it would help keep Quis at SG where he should be.

Plus if Jobarter can get him to cut back on the gambling he'd be a major defensive asset on a team looking to go that direction. They also could sure do with a continued vet presence.

He's 39 the Pacers should be rebuilding even if they won't admit it . Playing and paying 1.2 mil to Armstrong when you just spent 1.5 mil this season the 1st of a 3 year guaranteed contract to Travis Diener makes no sense at all to me.

Diener according to Bird is a superior shooter ( God knows we need those), a scapper and good ball handler at 25 lets give him the chance to show if he's a player. If we are concerned over our 3rd or 4th point guard making the difference on a playoff run or not , thats sad. Save the 1.2 mil it might be useful later.

I almost hate to say this considering Cro just did the same, but Armstrong is actually a pretty good fit for the Warriors as a backup for Baron next season. Mullin wants a pass-oriented veteran and Monta nor Sarunas fill that role.

Saras is a veteran pass first point. He just isn't very good.

May as well keep him around if we're not trading JO. We need guards.

    I tend to believe this.

I really like DA. He still as some came left as backup/third stringer. More important than that though he has a strong personality and is a strong presence in the locker room IMO.

I'm perfectly happy with a Tinsley/Diener/Armstrong point guard rotation. Andre Owens can be the 4th I guess if we have room.

But if you look at the free agent market there are few veterans out there. You have Dale, Mutombo, Payton, Kevin Willis but he may retire, PJ Brown but he wants the full MLE I believe, Clifford Robinson, and that's about it. I really think veterans such as DA are a very important piece to any team, re building or contending. And as it stands now, we might as well try and contend because I doubt Jim wants to re build as a coach and I doubt we find a deal we are happy with for Jermaine.

I don't want to lose DA. We need more veterans like him.

I don't want to lose DA. But if he moves, he'd actually be a good fit in Los Angeles. He'd be an upgrade over everybody they have at PG.
Welcome to Pacers Digest! New around here? Here are three tips for making the forum a great place to talk about Pacers basketball.

    • Log in. Even if you want to read instead of post, it's helpful because it lets you:
    • Change your signature options. You can hide all signatures by choosing "Settings" (top right) then "General Settings" (middle left) and unchecking the box "Show Signatures" (in the "Thread Display Options" area).
    • Create an ignore list. I know it may seem unneighborly. But you're here to talk about the Pacers, not argue with someone who's just looking for an argument. Most of the regular users on here make use (at least occasionally) of the "Ignore" feature. Just go to "Settings" -> "Edit Ignore List" and add the names.

I mean the guy no disrespect. He's a pro, and he'll work hard. But his kid is dying of cancer. No matter how much of a pro he is, he's not going to be all there.

If my daughter had cancer, I wouldn't be able to think about anything else until she was better.

Even if that is the case, 75% of Fish is still better than DA. I'm not even particularly a huge Fish fan (on the court, I mean).

Much better shooter and much more stable. Especially if you're talking about the Triangle and the Lakers, Fish is a much better fit. Not to mention that Phil would always rather play someone he trusts.

Pretty sure Fish will be starting for them next year.

    You're probably right.

So scratch it. 2 starters and a backup. Army's definitely the second-best PG on their roster, ahead of Farmar, Crit, Karl, and Sasha.
