Default Fisher to LA: 3 years 16M

The Lakers could use some of the old glory these days, and it's coming in the form of Derek Fisher.

The Lakers and Fisher were close to an agreement Tuesday night on a three-year contract, likely worth about $16 million.

Fisher became a free agent July 2 in a rare development when he was released from his Utah Jazz contract — giving up the remaining three years and $20.6 million — because he wanted to relocate to a city where 1-year-old daughter Tatum could get optimal care for her rare form of eye cancer.

I don't think Fisher is worth 16 million over 3 years. Damn.

Wow, well Kobe there is your big move.

That aside I hope his daughter pulls through, and gets the care she needs.
    That young is just unimaginable.

Wait...this is what pushes you over? Not the whole Butler for Brown debacle or the wasting of picks on guys who aren't even close to ready but need time to develop while Kobe is in his prime? It's Fish that pushes you over?

If I was a Lakers fan I would have lost faith right around the offseason that they traded away a future all-star and passed on Danny Granger among others in favor of a guy who won't be ready until Kobe's next contract.

No don't get it wrong. As a Lakers fan, it is a dream and I definitely open my arm to bring the FISH back to LA, but not at that price when we could sign someone else worth it (Darko, WE NEED A BIG! since Mihm likely to leave the Lakers!) 3mil/season is the MAX Fisher should be getting but 5mil? Damn is Mitch that dump or something?

Getting Bynum over Granger is a good pick. Bynum has more value than Granger IMO. More upside, more potential because he is a traditional big man.

There is only 2 explanations for this rediculous signing. One, the Lakers have a deal in place to land a big name through trade to compliment a veteran roster (Fisher). Two, this move is what Kobe wants. If overpay for Kobe's close friend, D-Fish is what keep Kobe back. Then I'm okay with it. But damn I"m still ****ed with it! We lose our MLE and it not worths it.

Yeah, I went ahead and looked it up. I just think it's too much for him. But, eh, it's a good signing still.

Clearly, LA does not think Crittenton will be a stud PG anytime soon

Seriously, the full MLE for DEREK FISHER?

How does Kupchak still have a job? He just spent $45 million on Luke Walton and Derek Fisher.

Wouldn't he have signed for the vet's minimum? How about vet's minimum and full health benefits? The Lakers could pick up the tab on all his daughter's treatments.

    you'd think so.

Then again, LA never was a prime free agent destination before Mitch took over, so he can't be blamed...

Mitch is as dumb of a GM as you can get, but let wait till the offseason to be over to fully judge on this move. If the Lakers make a trade to land KG/JO type, then Fisher becomes a good sign. We're from a young team into becoming a veteran team. However let just wait...

Um...you DO realize that the fact he signed another PG means he's likely to TRADE a PG, right?

And considering that Farmar doesn't carry much value...nah, can't bring myself to do it.

fish had arguably his best year with the jazz the last year. Fish brings heart, great work ethic, and a boat load of experience in a offensive system most players have fits picking up. i agree a little much but Mitch has done a hell of a lot worse in the MLE in the past. not a home run but definately not a strike out. Derrick will be a great mentor for one of our young Pg's. I think sasha, and farmar or Critt maybe on thier way out with kwame for artest or someone else.

he's a 33 year old point guard that wasn't more than an MLE-level player when he was in his prime.....

This signing makes no sense unless there is another big trade in place already. My gut tells me Farmar is on his way out. Hopefully it's a deal in place to land another bigtime star a la KG or JO. But I have my doubts, wouldn't be surprised if this was the only move our FO made.

Even worse for the Lakers with Fisher, Walton and Turiaf added to their cap they are now at the luxury tax threshhold. That means if they resign Chris Mihm his contract now cost double whatever he signs for against the cap and dollar for dollar in luxury tax.

Also now IF a Laker/Pacer trade for JO took place with Pacers accepting less than JO makes , that difference too is luxury taxed. Say JO's 19.7 mil is traded for 17.5 mil salary the Lakers pay an additional 2.2 mil in luxury tax.

Wonder how much Dr. Buss is willing to pay in taxes?

Fisher was a move to try and pacify Kobe. Fisher is one of Kobes buddies.
