Default Another JO Rumor....(JO to the Hawks)

    http://draftexpress.com/blogs.php?blogid=3

Speaking of Indiana, there is some chatter going on between them and Atlanta as well, specifically surrounding moving Jermaine O’Neal for a package including Josh Smith, the #11 pick, Speedy Claxton and salary cap filler. In that scenario the Hawks would likely take a point guard (Mike Conley Jr.) with the 3rd pick. Indiana will also be looking at point guards if they acquire another pick as they have long ago fallen out of love with Jamal Tinsley.

I hope Joe Johnson is the salary filler ... then I give them Tinsley for free (he already owns a house there)!

How 'bout Joe instead of Josh? They can have Tinsley anyhow as far as I'm concerned. Problem is, if JO doesn't want to play in Boston, I doubt he'll want to go to Atlanta.....makes it hard to make a trade like that.

I could see JO being happy in Atlanta. If Josh Smith is gone, it means he's the undisputed #1 option, and there's lots of talent surrounding him, including one star veteran in Joe Johnson. If they pick up Conley in the draft, they've got enough talent to be a contender within a couple years.

Besides that, if I'm a young black man with a lot of money to throw around and an interest in hip-hop culture, and I'm from South Carolina, Atlanta is a far more attractive place to spend time than Indianapolis.

As for the trade itself, I don't like it as described. First, Josh Smith is a Small Forward. We have about 8 of those under contract currently. I suppose he can play PF in certain matchups, but what the hell do we do with Granger and Williams the rest of the season?

Second, Speedy Claxton has negative trade value, and I don't view Smith and #11, minus Speedy's contract (4 years, $22 million) to be worth JO. The salary dump is nice, but not worth the reduction in talent.

If we're taking Speedy's contract, we should be getting Zaza Pachoulia also in addition to Josh Smith. In that scenario, you almost have to trade Danny Granger for a pick, because you can't have Granger, Smith, Williams, and Dunleavy preferring time at Small Forward.

EDIT: In reading some posts by Hawks fans, it seems Josh Smith plays his best ball as a PF. If true, this trade makes a lot more sense, as JOB is going to want to push the pace, and JO is often the 8th-9th guy down the court.

josh smith is definitely a pf. a bit undersized maybe at 6'9'', but his athleticism more than makes up for it - he was one of the league's leading shotblockers last season.

bynum, nene, now josh smith - see a trend there?

i don't really see a j.o. to atlanta deal happening. one, smith seems to have some behavioral issues. i think tptb will still clear of him despite his talent. two, that's a lot of filler - atlanta would have to send half their team just to match salaries. that would include speedy claxton, whose 3 years remaining and injury history make him rather unappealing.

The salary matching is not a problem. Atlanta is under the cap, and so can absorb JO's salary, which really is a major plus.

atlanta was under the cap so long now everyone thinks they're perpetually under the cap

take a look at hoopshype. in '07-'08, the hawks would be only about $5m under the cap. after calculating the cap hold for their two lottery picks, that cap space is going to go almost to zero.

so no, hawks can't absorb j.o.'s $20m salary. try it on trade checker. they *might* be able to absorb a smaller salary like tinsley's though - ok maybe not unless they renounce some players

At the last forum party there was a lot of discussion about the Pacers trading JO for Joe Johnson. I was in favor of it then and even more so now. I would love to see a backcourt of Joe Johnson and Marquis Daniels. Reason why that could work is both have some point guard skills - neither have enough point guard skills by themselves but as a combo I think theycould be a really dynamic backcourt - and in the east it is nice to have a big backcourt

Josh Smith is a monster talent but he's also turned into a monster headache. I think the Pacers need to spend a year or two with as few of those as possible. OTOH, he's 21, can play SG and with him and Granger you actually will have two versatile interchangeable wing players.

Not sure why I'd do that from Atlanta's perspective. Right now they can get Horford at 3 and use the 11 on a PG - probably Law unless Conley drops that far. Maybe the win now mentality has finally taken over.

    The players keep getting smaller?

We should stop before they start talking about bringing in Mugsy Bogues.

That would be the worst trade in history for the Pacers. What a joke.

I would like to reiterate my question of two days ago - is there any team that O'Neal is not rumored to be traded to?

Let's get Marvin Williams too. He's proven to be good for nothing so far (and he's a PF!), so we could probably get him for close to nothing. Granted, he's making pretty good dough as the, what, number 2 pick?

Maybe we could throw in next year's first rounder as an incentive. You know, since we're trading our franchise player for our own pick.

This is just it. I don't think that Larry/Donnie could ever live that down.

Hmm if we were to trade Ike for the #11 pick, it would be as if we Traded Harrington to Atl for Jackson, then Atl sent Harrington back to us for free.
We then traded Jackson and Harrington to GS for Murphy and Dunleavy, and Ike but then decided to give Atl Ike for free to return the favor.

Or Atl ended up trading Jackson for Ike. and We traded Harrington for Murphy and Dunleavy

    Why Not Us ?

I guess injury-prone, low percentage-shooting big men with tons of miles on the odometer making the max aren't as popular as they used to be.

I was starting to wonder the same thing. His trade value seems to be sinking lower and lower. I will be glad when something happens.
