I just heard on ESPN News that it is "close" there will be more later. Flip it on there.

With all this "rumored chatter"....am I the only one that will be p*ssed if nothing major happens on Draft night?

Question to those that know.......are teams able to trade the "rights" to the player that they draft the second that he is drafted by that team? Meaning....can the Lakers draft "X" player at 19 and then trade his rights to another team while trading their 2008-2009 1st round draft pick?

If that is the case, it sounds like anything that will happen can happen in between the second a team like the Lakers, Boston or Minny drafts a player on Thursday to the last minute when the 2007-2008 salaries take affect ( July 12th, I think ). This way, the Lakers can include the 2008-2009 1st round draft pick in any negotiations.

Am I correct in assuming this?

    Garnett to Lakers?

posted: Monday, June 25, 2007 | Feedback | Print Entry

Are the Boston Celtics the key to moving Kevin Garnett to L.A.?

The Los Angeles Times reported on Monday that the Lakers were in discussions with the Minnesota Timberwolves about a trade that would send Garnett to the Lakers. The trade would also involve the Indiana Pacers and possibly a fourth team.

After speaking with a league source, I think the deal has some legs, though it doesn't appear imminent.

According to the source, the key to completing the deal is finding a fourth team that would (a) take Jermaine O'Neal and (b) send the Timberwolves enough pieces to complete the deal.

For instance, here's one scenario that could work:
    • The Wolves send Kevin Garnett and Marko Jaric to the Lakers.
    • The Lakers send Lamar Odom and Andrew Bynum to the Pacers and the No. 19 pick to the Wolves.
    • The Pacers send Jermaine O'Neal to the Celtics.
    • The Celtics send the No. 5 pick, Theo Ratliff, Gerald Green and Sebastian Telfair to Minnesota.
Here's what that trade looks like in the Trade Machine, keeping in mind that there will also be draft picks involved.

The deal seems as though it would probably work for the Lakers, Pacers and Celtics.

The Lakers would get the guy they want to pair with Kobe in KG. Surely that would end any talk of a Kobe trade this summer.

The Pacers would get the two guys they want in exchange for O'Neal in Odom and Bynum. They've been waiting patiently for a straight-up swap with L.A. for weeks involving those three players (and a draft pick).
The Celtics would get another star quality player to pair with Paul Pierce without having to give up Al Jefferson.

But is it enough for Minnesota? That's the question.

The deal would give the Wolves more than $20 million in cap relief next summer and two additional picks in this year's draft. It also would give them two young prospects in Green and Telfair.

It may, however, fall a little short for Minnesota in the talent department. Perhaps the Wolves would bite if another young player or future draft pick were included.

I think Ainge could be able to sell the idea to his boy McHale of #5 and Gerald as a good enough core to make the deal happen. We'll see.

I would trade JO strait up for Gerald and a #5.

We would have to be getting a 1st... if that was a key between the 2 way w/ us and the Lakers I don't see it being any different for this one... besides not many NBA teams like having 3 1st round contracts in the same year, it's to hard to extend them all the same year... so I doubt Min would want to themselves in that position...

This trade makes sense... except we should be getting a 1st...

If we can get Odom and Bynum for J.O., I wont ***** about not getting a pick. Besides, there are other deals that could be made.

I could see us sending Odom off to Min and us getting Ratliff, young Bos kid, and a 1st (#7?)

Interesting confluence of needs and/or desires among these teams. I can't say no to the potential deal as currently outlined outright, but surely the Pacers could manage to receive a first-round pick or perhaps a decent back-up shooting guard?

What's the fascination with a pick? Bynum and Odom is a lot of talent to get. Yall aren't satisfied with receiving the most talent the Pacers franchise has ever gotten in a trade (excluding, possibly, DD for JO)?

Gerald Green and #5 is better than Bynum/Odom? That baffles me. Who is this guy available at #5 that I haven't heard of? Gerald Green is gonna be better than Lamar Odom? Really?

That deal makes the most sense to all involved. Minny gets a couple of expiring contracts, Gerald Green, and the #5 pick where they can draft a big man. JO goes to play with his buddy Pierce and Kobe will be more than satisfied to play alongside KG in LA. DW finally gets to satisfy his man-crush for Lamar Odom and Bynum could dominate in a weak eastern conference.

    Everybody wins with this deal.
I doubt Minnesota would do that. They'd probably insist on Jefferson, and/or the #19 pick from the Lakers.

Agreed. I don't really expect the number 19 pick to really be all that good, I'm just excited about maybe getting it because I really want us to be in on draft day.

BUT, considering I'm in class during the draft... to hell with it!

I hope we don't do the #5/Green thing for JO. This franchinse would most likely regret that for years. Bynum/Odom is the way to go.

not that it would be essential to making it a good trade for the Pacers, I still think we'll end up with a pick in this draft. Might not be #19, and might not be from this trade, but I will be shocked if we don't end up with one by the end of Thursday night.

I don't think we have a trade exception from the Al trade. We should still have a $1-2M exception from the AJ deal, but I think that's it.
