Default Ever wanted to see a young Arvydas Sabonis?

There's a large portion of the 1988 games, when Sabonis was 23 and David Robinson was 22...

You tell me who the bigger, stronger and more athletic player was.

Sabonis was an excellent player even after the injuries and past his prime. I don't know if he would have been better than DR, but I don't think it's much of a stretch to say it's possible.

Best passing big man I've ever seen.

It really was not his injuries that hindered him. Sabonis was known to be a heavy drinker. I heard players say that he could have stopped Shaq if he was not so liqoured up.

Kstat, thanks for posting this. Sabonis is a guy that all too often is overlooked by most people when the discussion comes up over great big men. Just imagine if a young Sabonis were coming into the league now, especially with Oden also available, man would that be fun to watch...

well, we're doing a 32-team all-time draft back at the Pistons forum. That's how this video got uncovered.

Sabonis was drafted 32nd by the Cincinnati Royals, 14 spot behind David Robinson. It created some controversy.

I think there are a few of us who remember 1983 when Arvydas Sabonis played in Bloomington with the traveling Russian team touring America playing college teams. Sabonis was unreal at 19, he was 7'3 240 and ran like a deer. He could shoot the 3 as if it was a layup.

His total skills were unreal , may have been the best passing huge man ever(though Wilt Chamberlain was very good too ), Sabonis had great timing on blocking shots. Before tearing up his achille and his knee he was probably the best player in the world.

When he appeared finally years later as a 31 year old rookie in Portland , he was a shell of his former self as a player. Now 12 years older and 50 pounds heavier. But he still averaged 14.5 ppg and 8.1 rpg playing 24 minutes a night. Shooting 55% from the field , 38% on 3's and 76% from the line.

Due to the cold war and USSR rules America missed out on seeing an All Time great in his prime. The rest of the world knew of Arvydas Sabonis and would tell you he was the worlds best player in his prime.

Sabonis was absolutely amazing back then. There's really nobody to compare him with - maybe a David Robinson or Hakeem in terms of athleticism with Dirk's shooting ability, Walton's passing ability and as strong as any basketball player not named Shaq or Wilt.

Just the total, complete package for a big man. If he'd started his career in the NBA my guess is he'd have made the top 50 list and we'd possibly have him on the short list for best NBA player ever - maybe a top 10. By the time he got to the league his legs were shot but he was still strong as a bull, could shoot and pass.

    A few points on this:

    1) I'll believe anything Dino Radja says.
    2) SICK mullet!!
    3) Where can I get an Arvydas CCCP throwback?
    4) This guy was pretty much a Larry Bird/Hakeem hybrid.
    5) We need more Soviet video of this guy.
    6) He made Mr. Robinson look like a little girl in those clips.

In Europe for sure. It's a shame he never got to the NBA when he was younger, and the injuries...

Some people see 21 year old 7'0" 250 lbs Andrea Bargnani as the closest thing to the next Sabonis...

I think - understanding the game is the thing that makes him great. When he returned back to Lithuania to retire, he was a true general on the floor and was a best Euroleagues player (regular season(?)) at the age of 39. A couple of other nice passing clips:

    That's the **** right there.

Though blown wide open layup + opponent losing uncontested rebound off himself = good league.

When did it become cool to sport Commie/Fascist stuff?
I see these CCCP soccer jerseys and track shirts and stuff, and all this Che stuff too...what's with that? It's so deliciously ironic that people are making money off of Communist nostalgia...even Cameron Diaz had some issues about a Mao tote-bag...What's next here, Ho Chi Mihn Starter jackets? Fidel Castro boxer shorts? Kim Il Sung diamond bracelets or Kim Jung-Il phatty-style bling-bling chains?!

I've got my Kim Jong-Il signed golf club set. They are replicas of the clubs he used to make 16 holes in one on his first ever round of golf. They're awesome!

Please watch the Motorcycle Diaries, one of the finest films of the past 10 years, and you'll understand why people became so enamored with Che...

...As for the CCCP stuff, it's just like why would anyone wear a retro NBA jersey for a defunct team...it's just cool. That's all (unless you want to get into political ideologies, here). And I would DEFINITELY sport a CCCP Marciulionis jersey...JayRedd, grab your Sabonis jersey and we can go throw it down real old school on these capitalist pigs.

Co-sign. Sitting in Assembly Hall, listening to Chuck Crabb attempt to pronounce all those Russian names - one player stood out as the Soviets drilled the Hoosiers that night.

    Sabonis = Wilt?
Why do the things that we treasure most, slip away in time
Till to the music we grow deaf, to God's beauty blind
Why do the things that connect us slowly pull us apart?
Till we fall away in our own darkness, a stranger to our own hearts
And life itself, rushing over me
Life itself, the wind in black elms,
Life itself in your heart and in your eyes, I can't make it without you
