If they go through with it (killing them), should the rest of the world sit by and let it happen? Do we have a choice?

We don't have a choice. Change unfourtenately must come from within in order to work, and I think we've seen enough proof of that in recent years.

Doesn't make this issue right in any way but imposing ourselves in a way which would be required in order to truly oppose this would create more harm than good.

Well we've stood by when Christians and homosexuals alike were killed, why would we do anything now?

Is that surprising in a country where stoning is the punishment for adultery? Women were give labout eight years for murder then sentenced to death for adultery.

Iran is the number 2 country in the would for death sentences. The US is sixth. It goes China (in the 1000's) Iran 177, Pakistan 82, Iraq and Sudan 65 and US with 53. Great company huh?

If the US wanted to do something we would abolish the death penalty here and take away any legitamacy that such an extreme and abused practice has.

    So what qualifies as pornographic?

Would they kill American TV producers?

    Alfred Stieglitz?

    Michaelangelo?

I'm sure pronographic is defined as intentional sexual acts or displays not just nude human beings.

I'm sure you don't actually know what the definition of "pornography" is in Iran.

We're talking a fundamentalist religious state here.

    Bingo.

I don't find the concept of executing producers of pornography any more offensive than the use of the DP here for murderers, or in SE Asia for drug dealers.

You don't find it any more offense. Really. I may not want the DP to exist anymore either, but I'll feel a lot more sympathetic to porn makers than I will a murderer. It's not equal to me.

I'm not comfortable with any society deciding when death is a just punishment. There will always be mistakes made and prejudgices re-enforced in the best circumstances.

Iran already does worse than kill pornographers. They kill adulters, political protestors and would like to kill British authors who write books they dislike. I'm not sure how pornography becomes the last straw.

Where did I saw this was the last straw? It's just a recent reminder to me of how ****ed up they are.

    Really?

Considering in most nations the porn industry is driven by the kidnapping and slavery of teen and pre-teen girls I don't feel all that sympathetic to them.

Or are you disillusioned enough to think the Asian porn industry in any way resembles that of the US and Western Europe?

Either way, the death penalty is barbaric IMO.

Thanks for the minor shot re: disillusioned. I appreciate that.

I know next to nothing about the porn industry around the world. I am speaking under the assumption (perhaps totally wrong) that they are filming consenting adults.

I expect the law will most be used to punish the women in the industy--the actual victims. The whole thing came about when an Iranian star was rumored to have been in a video. I'm convienced Iran doesn't actually care about their sex trade industry as it is so rampant. I also have no doubt that the industry is brutal and criminal.

My apologies - change that to naive if you like. I tried to avoid using a term that was overly insulting but I guess I missed it.

Nah - in much of the world porn, drugs and prostitution go hand-in-hand (to some extent here too but it's much less prevalent) and a bunch of it (I'm sure nobody has numbers but Human Rights Watch has put together info from time to time) has to do with kids. We could go into things like societies not valuing girls and other things but that's pretty depressing.

Of course one of the sad things is that with the kiddie porn, guess where the biggest market for it is?

    Wow, that's insane.

Adultery, premarital sex and porn are very, very serious offenses over here. Depending on the country, the definition is skewed beyond reason. For example, in some countries if an unmarired man and an unmarried woman are stopped riding around in a car together the ramifications can be significant. Likewise defining porn. In some countries, Vogue or Glamour with ads of women in bras can get you into some real trouble. Interestingly, in Dubai the sex industry, especially prostitution is rampant while the government looks the other way. Unfortunately, there are a lot of Middle Eastern countries trafficking underage girls.

The punishments, especially for women, are wack. Even though there are many such instances, I wonder how many of you saw the video of the 17-year-old Kurdish girl's stoning. I did and I wish I hadn't. It is something that is going to trouble me for the rest of my life. The worldwide outrage was significant as was mine. I saw a lot of condemnation from the States on how barbaric the people were over here. Then, a couple of days later there was another brutal, brutal story about a group that tortured, multilated and burned a guy while making his girlfriend watch. Afterward, they gang-raped, mutilated and burned her. This happened in the States.

Sick people are sick people no matter where they are.
The best exercise of the human heart is reaching down and picking someone else up.
