Default Should I get knee surgery?

I know that this isnt the kind of place I should ask about knee surgery, but im just looking for some advice.

As some of you know ive had knee problems for sometime, well now its getting to a point where I am missing work about once a month because of my knee being swollen.

I cant climb up stairs without my knee cracking the whole time, and the pain gets so bad that ive thrown up because the pain is so bad.I dont really tell my parents or my gf how bad my knee really is because I dont want them to worry about me.

But now that it is affecting my work I am getting very worried.I work in a factory, very physical work. And I dont want to whine to my boss about my knee because then they put you on a "weight limit",and you can only do certain jobs and blah blah.

But im only 23 (going to be 24 in a month),but I cant even play 9 holes of golf without my knee swelling up and locking up.My doctor gave me some pills for my knee but even if I take those my knee still kills me.

He has taken xrays of my knee and found nothing wrong, and I dont know much about MRI's but people tell me thats what I need to get.

    What should I do?

I would push your docotor for more extensive tests. Youshouldnt be in that much pain. And trust me, take care of your knees now. You don't want to screw them up this early in life. You'll need them for a few more years. Go soon so you don't continue to do more damage to them.

Insurance depending, I would get this thing scanned to the limits your policy allows. Get a couple doctors to do it, even if it means haivng to switch your primary care physician. You're too young to be in that much pain without something going on, but the younger you are the easier it is to recover from any kind or surgery.

What physical therapy have you done?

A number of knee injuries can be fixed by strengthening or stretching the rest of the leg muscles. But not all of them. If you've torn something, it needs to be put back together. If you've got an "overuse" injury it there might be a less-invasive cure but it may take a substantial time commitment (and co-pay, depending on insurance issues.)

Most doctors are rather cautious about cutting unless the physical therapy is clearly not working. During my track-and-field days, I went from nagging (but often crippling) knee pain for a couple of seasons before the doctor said, "we've tried everything; let's cut.")

If you're on the southside, I highly recommend Dr. Jack Farr. I wish he was my college team's orthopedic.

You should get surgery. Messing up your knee more and more could lead to more serious problems then the ones you got.

This past summer my knee was as big as a grapefruit, well I didnt want to tell anybody or go to the doctor. I was just putting ice on it, after about 5 days of pain and swelling not going away I went to the doctor and the doctor was shocked at how infected my knee was, I had surgery done the same day. I would have surgery done if I was you, better then living with the pain the rest of your life.

    AH yes - I didn't consider infection.

In fections can actually eat away at your bones to the point where you require joint replacement and can never get your mobility back.

Don't be an idiot. Go to the doctor right now, and do what they say you should do.

Yep. My doctor said the same thing, if I waited a few more days it would have gotten to the bone and they might have had to amputate my leg. Thank The Lord that didnt happen.

Damn, you were really lucky and smart enough to go to the doctor as soon as you did.

What made your knee swell up though, any particular injury or was it just the random infection with nothing else involved?

Random infection. Some little bump grew on my leg, I thought it was a ingrown hair, so I left it alone. Next day the knee was HUGE. They had to put my leg in a half cast so I couldnt bend it and I had to go to the doctor everyday for them to change my bandage and give me shots to stop the infection from spreading. Worst damn time of my life.

You need to know what's wrong before they think about cutting. What possible surgery are they talking about if they don't know what the problem is. Get an MRI or better yet get a doctor who will prescribe one. Are you seeing a specialist or a family physician?

See another doctor or an orthopedist.

Well im going into the doctor today, this is my 2nd day in a row missing work.So I hope I still have a job.

And I have thought about trying physical therapy but I dont think my job would let me have the time off.Another one of my friends worked there before I did,and he injured his wrist really badly doing something out there at work and they fired him after his 3rd day of PT.The unemployment office was telling him he had a lawsuit against them. But he just collected his unemployment and got another job.

But ill update all of you after I find out whats going on.

thank you all for your concern.

Well,I just got back from the doctor. And he told me that I need to see a specialist so he set me up with an orthopedic doctor.

My doctor described to me what is going on..he said something about the muscle on the top part of my knee grew too long so that why my kneecap keeps sliding around and pops out of place. He also said that the main thing would be surgery.

I go to the orthopedic doc on weds...so we'll see how that goes.

That doesn't sound like something that will be fixed via physical therapy.

Well what you need to do is this:

    Forget about the knee films.
    You have a few options.
Ibuprofen three times a day at a higher dose such as 600-800 mg --- take it for a few weeks and see if that decreases the inflammation.
Physical therapy. Sometimes that really can work wonders if you have strains or arthritic joint problems.
MRI. That is the gold standard as far as visualizing goes.
    Go see a knee specialist.
Capsaicin cream/ointment. A more powerful form of icy hot or ben gay.
