    Faneca says he wants out

    Friday, May 11, 2007
    By Ed Bouchette, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

    Peter Diana, Post-Gazette
Steelers offensive lineman Alan Faneca glares at new offensive line coach Larry Zierlein during mini-camp drills today.

Guard Alan Faneca said today he is attending the required Steelers minicamp only because the team is making him and predicted this will be his last season with the Steelers.

Faneca, who has played in the past six Pro Bowls, said he will depart Pittsburgh Sunday night when practices end and won't return until training camp.

Faneca also said he has asked the Steelers to trade him but that he does not think that will happen. He said they have shown by their lack of progress in contract talks that they no longer want him beyond the 2007 season.

"This will be my last year as a Pittsburgh Steeler," Faneca declared.

He even said that it would be hard for him to serve as a co-captain of the offense again.

"You go somewhere, you've been here for nine years; to do what I've done to help this team out. The things I've done for this team ... and the offer I get is pretty much a non-offer. What am I to think? What are the guys in this room to think? If they can do it to me and everybody else and let Joey [Porter] go and do things like that, what does that say to the rest of the guys?"

Faneca said he's talked to "everyone" in the front office, including Art Rooney, Dan Rooney and Kevin Colbert.

"I've been asking since February, to trade me, to let me go,'' Faneca said in such an emotional interview that at times his left hand was shaking slightly. "I've done my piece, I've done my time, I've done everything I can for this organization.

"I lived and breathed Steelers football for nine years and gave them everything I had, helped them win a Super Bowl. In my mind, I've earned the right to be treated fairly. To make me go out there this year, play football with no security ... for what I've done for this organization, in my mind is not right."

Maybe I'm getting this confused with another bad one, but isn't this the forum where if you keep trolling with articles that are just meant to **** everyone off you are supposed to get warning cards like in soccer, because it just seems like the Stealer crap by Douchette et al., that no one wants to read, keeps getting dumped in here like an unflushed steamer.

    I can't see a thing wrong with it. It's a Colts/NFL board.

Maybe Jay just wanted us to see that the Colts aren't the only team to lose players.

I don't see anything wrong with it personally BUT wasn't there a rule instituted that we weren't to post articles from other sites without adding our own commentary... or was that just for the 'news and politics' forum?

I think that might be what Sphere is referring to.

In any case, I like seeing news and commentary (sporting, politics, or otherwise) posted (with or without added commentary) in their appropriate sub-forums because it allows me to see things I might otherwise miss. Especially when things get extra busy and hectic.

Hmmm. I believe that was only meant for the News/Politics board because of its nature, and not the entire forum.

Regardless, I don't see why it would cause such a heated reaction.

I think McClintic Sphere was kidding.

That was also the first time he'd posted in like six months.

Steelers would be smart to retain Faneca. We all saw what happened to the Seahawks offensive line when they let Hutch go..I think a similar thing would happen in Pitt. Faneca deserves this money and the Steelers are trying to lowball their great players..as usual. Happened to Heinz Ward..Joey Porter..and now Faneca...but I think losing Faneca will have the most impact.

I wish more articles were posted here to comment on..because I actually like the NFL more then the NBA nowadays.

I put my commentary into the title, didn't realize that it would cause such a storn. See it, it says, "Bad News in Pittsburgh". I said it all in four words.

Anyone that's read this part of PD knows that I think Faneca is the real MVP in Pittsburgh, and losing him would put the offensive line into a tailspin and make the transition from Cowher to Tomlin even more difficult.

Its easier for the Steelers to replace Roethlesberger, Ward, Marvel Smith AND Parker than it is to replace Alan Faneca. There is not another pulling guard like him in the league, and the entire Steelers offense is (should be) based on his ability to make a huge hole whereever he wants to.

Only if you want a smashmouth running game. He ain't cheap for an OG, and the irony is that the Steelers probably pay their interior linemen as well as anyone and if he's a star in the NFL from playing interior lineman, well, that only happens in a few cities.

My thought is that his talents would only be partially realized playing indoors. He's the type of hitter that puts away a game on a cold, wet day. Outdoor teams would out-bid you.

Contrary to popular opinion, I don't try to flood this part of the board with Steelers articles, but those are the only ones I read that aren't posted here.

Meanwhile, I've noticed you posting more on the Pacers board. Keep it up, I enjoy them regardless of whether I agree or not.

I was thinking that, but he'd cost too much $$$.
