    Default Another Coaching Vacancy???

ANother to vie for the available coaching talent and perhaps slow down the hiring process for the P's. (I'm impatient to know who the coach is gonna be so much rides on his style etc.)

    VAN GUNDY RETIRES - AGAIN
    By PETER VECSEY
May 6, 2007 -- Jeff Van Gundy has taken another walk to that celebrated hot-dog stand.

The Post has learned the former Knicks coach, who quit 19 games (10-9) into the '01-'02 season, again is leaving the profession for the foreseeable future, and his decision has nothing to do with last night's Game 7 103-99 playoff elimination home loss to the Jazz.

According to an impeccable source, Van Gundy's mind has been made up for weeks, if not months, to distance himself from the stress of the sidelines regardless of whether Houston got bumped early on or took the season to the championship limit.

It's his choice. Given the Rockets' rude first-round sendoff, the third time in Van Gundy's four-year tour (and sixth of Tracy McGrady's 10-year career), it's highly unlikely owner Les Alexander would choose to re-sign the free-agent control freak, anyway.

As evidenced by how the Jazz beat their opponents to countless rebounds and loose balls, Houston is desperate for livelier bodies and a more "athletically inclined" coach.

In fact, a source reveals Alexander's emissaries already have spoken to at least one targeted replacement. Nevertheless, the timing of Jeff's departure is weird on two counts.

His brother, Stan, who quit as Heat last season, only just resurfaced as a candidate for various openings (Bobcats boss Michael Jordan and GM Bernie Bickerstaff interviewed him last week) throughout the NBA. And guess who was slapping five with Jerry Sloan after last night's upset? Assistant coach Scott Layden, the mortally stunned Knicks president when Jeff Van Gundy abandoned the franchise.

Why's that? Because he was that good, or becasue you don't want him coaching another team? (Serious question, not meant to be smartassed)

Sounds like he's burnt out again, and wouldn't be interested in coaching anywhere. Therefore, this means we not only have yet another team to compete with in the coaching market, but arguably a much better situation than ours.

The Rockets are a pretty good team. They could use a little more depth, but they have a nice duo with Yao/Tmac. Battier is a nice piece, but a bruce bowen type. Alston is iffy at PG, and Howard/Hayes are serviceable PFs. They really don't have a bench. And no scorers besides Tmac and Yao. I think it would have been a different turnout if Bonzi would have gotten minutes, but of course there was turmoil there.

It would surely be a challenge. If he got that job he would have two bonafide superstars to ruin the careers of instead of one.

I would enjoy Rick on the Rockets. The first time he says I'm thinking about bringing Tracy McGrady off the bench would be my favorite.

Don't forget about the opening in Orlando that will become official this week.

I figure after the Pacers win the draft lottery coaches will be lining up outside of Conseco.

But then he has a face tailor made for radio...

Nuntius was right. I was wrong. Frank Vogel has retained his job.

Let him go there maybe we could help him out by sending him dunmurphy for any of the players who have athletic ability who he will miss use.

What I heard on ESPN this morning is more along the lines of JVG and Houston's TPTB don't get along, not that Jeff's gonna retire again. Therefore, I have to ask...

Anybody want him? (Besides Jay, that is.)

I might just reacquire tickets if that happens.

I'd be thrilled to get JVG. But I really expect him to take a year or two off. Just looking at him during the playoff series the past couple of weeks, makes me think that losing eats him up.

Jay what would you think about the Pacers hiring JVG's longtime assistant Tom Thibodeau.

That's fine, I guess, if he also brings along Patrick Ewing to work with Harrison, Diogu, and (dare I say it) Bynum.

In a dream world, I'd like JVG plus his entire staff plus Chuck as the shooting/ offensive/ player development coach - a role that he absolutely excelled in just a couple of years ago.

UB, I looked at him during the playoffs and didn't know what to think. I though he looked more tired in his Knicks days but I kept thinking to myself... please let the Jazz win so that we can get our hands on this guy...

Having said all that, I also think the Rockets are a place that Rick's "cerebral" approach might work quite well, although Rafer Alsted will drive Rick insane. Ming, McGrady, Battier, those are the types of players that Rick can devise and excellent gameplan for. And the lack of a bigman coach won't hinder Yao Ming's development because he's already "there."

And the Rockets might be enough of a knuckle-head-free team so that Rick's lack of people skills aren't as much of a problem as they were here.
