Most 1st round picks are lottery protected. That is to say if the pick is in the top 14, the pick doesn't trade teams.
Can you do it the other way around? That is, stipulate that the pick MUST be in the top 14 for the pick to trade teams? If we trade O'Neal, chances are he's going to a contender (say, the Lakers). It might be worth it to be patient and demand that the pick has to be a lottery pick for us to grab it.
I'm not specifically endorsing this idea just yet. But the question stands: is this possible? Has it happened before?
i guess it might be possible, but why would you want to do that? if you're trading with a contender, how long do you have to wait before that team falls into the lottery? 4-5 seasons? might as well give j.o. away and "earn" the lottery picks that way.
Trading him to a contender should cost the other team enough that they aren't contenders anymore.
Who, other than Kobe or Bynum, would we be willing to take from the Lakers for Jermaine freaking O'Neal?
Odom, Parker, and a pick ain't getting the job done.
Why do the things that we treasure most, slip away in time
Till to the music we grow deaf, to God's beauty blind
Why do the things that connect us slowly pull us apart?
Till we fall away in our own darkness, a stranger to our own hearts
And life itself, rushing over me
Life itself, the wind in black elms,
Life itself in your heart and in your eyes, I can't make it without you
