Question Looking for a TV tuner...

Wonder if anyone can help me out. I just bought a laptop (the same one Bball purchased recently, it seems) and I've been playing around with Vista and Media Center. I've always wanted a DVR, so I'd like to start using my laptop as one. I don't know a whole lot, but what I do know is that I need a TV tuner. I don't know which one I should get, though. All the reviews online are a couple years old. I'm assuming I'll need a USB one since I've got a laptop, but I could be wrong. Anyway, if anyone can offer me any advice, it'd be much appreciated.

    Gracias.

I have one on my desktop that I use with Media Center, but don't know what to tell you about a laptop. Sorry.

Welcome to Pacers Digest! New around here? Here are three tips for making the forum a great place to talk about Pacers basketball.

    • Log in. Even if you want to read instead of post, it's helpful because it lets you:
    • Change your signature options. You can hide all signatures by choosing "Settings" (top right) then "General Settings" (middle left) and unchecking the box "Show Signatures" (in the "Thread Display Options" area).
    • Create an ignore list. I know it may seem unneighborly. But you're here to talk about the Pacers, not argue with someone who's just looking for an argument. Most of the regular users on here make use (at least occasionally) of the "Ignore" feature. Just go to "Settings" -> "Edit Ignore List" and add the names.

Ah, thanks guys. Shame on me for not doing a search on the subject first...

About how big are the files, generally? I've got 120 GB in this computer and a 250 GB external (plus 80 on my desktop that's quickly becoming obsolete), but I know how easy it is to fill that much space up.

Also, does anyone know how well Media Center works? Should I record through that, or with the software that comes with the tuner?

In general, and especially if you get the one Anthem's suggested, use their software to record; recording in divx will save you a lot of space.

This also looks pretty good, especially for a laptop.

As far as recording software, you should check out GB-PVR. Works great, runs on everything, and is easy to install. MediaPortal is supposed to be pretty amazing as well, but I haven't tried it personally.
