I love how Indiana and Illinois are in noway the same, yet when I look across the river here it doesn't look any different.

What's the murder rate comparison though?

For being in cornfield country it seems the big V has three things it's known for.

#1 One of the best Juco College basketball programs in the country.

#2 Known for their 2 year Crim degree.

#3 Known for an above average murder rate for a small city.

That is a really good point. What do those Chicago writers have to say about their own down-state?

There are some legitimate reasons why they might like to be in Chicago rather than Indianapolis, in addition to the natural snobbiness of a historically great city. But how would they like to spend a day in Effingham or Normal or Moline?
And I won't be here to see the day
It all dries up and blows away
I'd hang around just to see
But they never had much use for me

As a person who lived in the heart of Chicago for over 5 years, let me speak for all Chicagoans:

    There's a southern Illinois?

I drove through Southern Illinois once from Chicago to St. Loius.

I had the following thought: Chicagoans should stop making fun of Indiana for being "the middle of nowhere."

Southern Indiana is beautiful. (Northern Indiana is pretty bad, I'll admit that). But *anything* "downstate" Illinois - that's just u-g-l-y.
Why do the things that we treasure most, slip away in time
Till to the music we grow deaf, to God's beauty blind
Why do the things that connect us slowly pull us apart?
Till we fall away in our own darkness, a stranger to our own hearts
And life itself, rushing over me
Life itself, the wind in black elms,
Life itself in your heart and in your eyes, I can't make it without you

Wait Jay if Chicago can take credit for Lake Shore Drive then northern Indiana can claim the Indiana Dunes. Oh one other thing northern Indiana is famous for......the Ponderosa Sun Ranch.

Re: Chicagoans' concept of statehood: anything south of 95th street or west of O'hare might as well be Antarctica.

The mayor is a more powerful and important post than the Governor.

Illinois is one of the only places in the country where actual residents misprounounce the name and can't find thier own state on the map (but can find lake michigan and the city).

I certainly refer to Naperville as "Iowa".

I've actually heard natives describe I-80 as "the real Mason-Dixon line" (although they backpeddle when they realize that would make Lincoln a confederate. After all, he's "from" Chicago.)

But rest assured, all of "us" East Coasters think you're all from the same large farm in the middle of nowhere.

Yeah, I love that old "New Yorker's veiw of the world" map/poster.

There's a small circle in the midde of that farm for the race track.

But you're in Boston now, right? How many people have asked you if you know Larry Bird? I got that all the time when we visited Boston as a teenager.

You're giving too much credit. I thought we're all from the same Double Wide?

No one, actually. I haven't gotten much Indiana-related bashing. To my face, at least.

In my defense, it was 1985 and Bird was bigger than God in Boston at that time. I think we even got free ice cream from one vender who was so impressed that we from Indiana (he picked up immediately that we didn't have BAH-stun accents.)

Other Bears fans had noticed this, and we developed theories to explain it.

Mine was simple: Most Colts fans were too afraid to actually drive into Miami. It's WAY too big a place for them. And who knows what those women on South Beach might have been hiding under those skimpy bikinis?

Don't ask Marvin Harrison what he did during the bye week. "Batman never told where the Bat Cave is," he explained.

It's amazing that someone would actually try and talk trash about a whole city, a whole state like that. It's even worse that the editor let him write an article like that.

There are some great Bears fans out there. This is just a jackass who should be ignored.

Although it is funny to read his writting. What a joke. Some of the stuff he wrote just makes me laugh out loud.

Just ignore a jackass like him and remember that there are more Bears fans who are classy than the ones like this guy.

This is not new. The Chicago news hacks have derided Indy since the 1st year the Pacers were in the NBA. I remember vividly that the beat writer for the Bulls described all the in-game entertainment (Pacemates, fan contests, music during timouts) as a circus. The next time the Bulls were in town, the Pacers had a circus night; complete with Bill Shirk escaping from a straightjacket while dangling from the top of Market Square.

It is soooooo sweet to beat a big city for the championship. Don't forget to stick it to anyone from Chicago you see at the track this summer.

Nuntius was right. I was wrong. Frank Vogel has retained his job.

He's just upset because Indy didn't celebrate a title appropriately - by setting cars on fire and shooting people. I'm sure the lack of mayhem and firebombings was troubling to him.

After all, Chicago celebrated the Bulls' 1993 title by burning 100 police cars and shooting two people. He just doesn't understand how it can be a championship without millions in property damage and at least a few fatalities.
