    Default Lottery Protection

This may not be the most popular/optimistic post.

Does anybody know if the 1st round pick we traded for Al is lottery protected? It's starting to look like we might want it to be.

Have you seen the Eastern Conference?

The chances of Indy not making the playoffs are close to 0%.

I'm with mellifluous, until I see a consistent rotation...some consistent play from all players....I'm not counting all my chickens until they hatch.

We are a mediocre team floating alongside the rest of the mediocre teams in the East.

Has it ever been officially announced what the level of Lottery protection is?

Well, we've played over twice as many road games as home games (6 vs 13), have 8 new players and at times 3 new starters (counting Tinsley who only started 27 games last season).

And yet we've still got the #5 seed in the East.

I'd like to see some tweaks made to the backcourt, but other than that the team just needs to find a consistent rotation and gel.

"Gel" sets the expectation way too high.

Most of us would be ecstatic if this team just showed some marked improvement in a few key areas. Then let the chips fall where they may while waiting for more changes in the summer and next season to commence.

To actually answer your question, I believe that the pick is top ten protected. It won't matter though, we will get into the playoffs and lose in the first round. Again.

Are we a playoff team? Probably. The schedule will get a little easier, the players will improve a little bit in their interactions. However, I think we're still looking at a 7-8 seed and another first round pick.

I really don't like the way the team looks currently, simply because we're not "rebuilding on the fly" and we're not "competing for a title". Right now, we're "putting a mediocre team out there because we're afraid to rebuild".

7-8 seed? We're the 5th seed now with all the bull**** working against us thus far.

No kidding.....the Bulls are starting to heat up....and once Shaq gets back ( probably after the ASB )...they are only going to improve. On top of that....the Hawks are doing much better....and traditional teams like the Wizards and Bucks can still make it.

I wouldn't put too much into being the 5th seed now in the LEastern Conference. We are only 19 games into the season and there is a 1 game lead that seperates the 5th to 10th seed.

I agree with Eindar. After 3 disappointing seasons and given the rather mediocre and inconsitent play that we have seen so far.....I am not optimistic of where we stand right now. I could hope that we will get better....but unless there is a shakeup in the roster....I won't be surprised if we end up where we always end up......a 7th to 8th seed with an easy 1st round exit ( what's worse....we won't have a 1st round pick in one of the deepest drafts in years ).

So is the pick lottery protected, or only top 10 protected?

No, but others will also fade.

There is not much to indicate a big improvement for Indy, more games at home but tougher matchups, but there is little reason to think the East is going to field 8 teams over .500 for the playoffs this year either even if Miami and Chicago do get it together.

The Pacers have already beaten 2 of the top East teams this year - Cleveland and Orlando.

Did someone really basically say "look out for Atlanta"? Sorry if I can't buy into sub-500 TOR and ATL as serious threats. If either of those teams were in the blue and gold this entire board would be melting down even more. What have these teams done that Indy hasn't so far that suggests they will win more games?

ORL, DET, CLE, CHI, MIA, (a DIV winner from the Atlantic) - every other team has played just as poorly as Indy or more so. But now we are supposed to think that they are going to get a LOT better while the Pacers only get a little bit better?

It's not about the Pacers getting better, it's just that the East doesn't look as deep as the West. You don't have to see Indy going for a title to see them as a .500 playoff team, or perhaps even a little bit better than that.

NO, "Most of us" expect much more than that.

    QFT

We're not world-beaters, at least not yet. We've got issues that may or may not get worked out with time. Stuff from having so many road games, so many new people, and a suggested new style. I don't think .500 is too bad right, especially in the East. Sure, Chicago and Miami will get better, but so will we (in theory), and there's no reason to believe that a .500 (or less) team won't make it into the playoffs in the pathetic excuse for a professional basketball conference called the East.

Are we far from contender? Oh yes. But are we worth keeping an eye on? I think so. If nothing else, I think we can appreciate the hustle and effort this team is giving us every night. Win or lose, they're playing the way so many of us asked for last season.

This team may not do much, but I'm sticking with 'em.

    Top Ten

http://www.nbadraft.net/ Scroll down the the Atlanta pick that would have been the Pacers' and then click on the team name to get the details of the trade. I trust the source only because this is what I remember from the time of the trade.
