Default Do you believe in God because... (if you don't, this isn't for you)

... you grew up having your parents telling you He is real, or did you decide later on in life that He exists?

Did you believe simply because others believed, or for another reason?

Yes my parents taught me to believe in God as I was growing up, but at some point it became completely my belief. Everyday of my life I become more convinced. Although I don't know of a higher percentage than 100%.

Then my follow up question would have to be, why did it become completely your belief?

I was raised Christian and I wouldn't say I only believe because my parents did. I don't know when "my faith became my own." I'm a fairly independent person. I guess I'd say it was when I started making decisions about what I would do and not my parents.

Community certainly plays apart however and I think in our culture we over-play personal religion.

Was there any intellectual reasoning involved, or is it "blind faith" ?

I do believe deep down inside, but I go through stages of doubt sometimes. I guess you could say that my faith is weak sometimes. I was raised Christian in a home and a church where people were pretty judgemental (i know that's hard to believe). And I think that hurt me more than it helped me (or maybe it's helping me today now that I am learning lessons from it). But, after I got old enough to do what I wanted I did and do get that feeling that you hear people talk about where it feels like "God is calling me home". And there have been times when I cried out to God and I did get a feeling that I was heard. So, I guess that's my "proof". It's kind of hard to explain the feeling though.

On the simple question of, "do you believe in God" I think there is a lot of intellectual reasoning involved - really a lot of it. But there is also some faith involved.

The more important question is what came first? I don't remember - my best recollection is faith and reasoning come about at the same time. But clearly at some point along the way, faith has to enter into the equation otherwise you'll never get there.

I think faith is a more important thing in other aspects of my christian faith, but in the basic question of do you believe in God - there is a whole lot of reasoning.

Would you share your reasoning please?

How much intellectual reasoning is involved in any of our value judgments?

I mean take your position on another issue like when life begins, when is it all right to take a life, or the role of tolerence in a society. I don't think anyone would say they just have "blind faith" on these issues but none of these things can be "proven" as well.

I'd say the bigger question is do you believe God communicates to you. If so the question of faith vs reasoning is academic. If not...I don't know I can't answer why I don't believe.

I went to school most of my life at a Christian school and they (pretty much) forced God on you. One day after my grandma died I just asked "Why God?! Why did you have to take her?!"And for some unexplainable reason, just prayed to God to become one of His children.

So yes I'm a Christian. BUT, I'm starting to question the Bible and the lessons I was taught

I'm a firm beleiver in god.

Whenever I see something beautiful or great, I simply can't deny that it was put there by a greater being.

I remember hearing a quote a while back from an Atheist that went something like, "I'd rather die a beleiver in God to find that the religion isn't true, then to die an atheist and find that it is." That isn't the reason I beleive in god..but it's a reason that many do.

My parents were/are Christians, but it was never really a topic at home. I went to a christian school all the way up until college.

I believe 100% there must be a higher being. My main reason is because the odds are too large for us to have "lucked" into the universe as it is today. Also, there are too many unanswerable questions regarding the birth of our existence, both individually, and as a group.

My answer is a combination of answered prayer and scholarship. History is very real and very significant to me, and so the "wisdom of ages" is persuasive. As Uncle Buck says, faith is important. But it is not blind faith. I've seen answers to prayers enough that I know God is present with me.

This sounds like "Pascal's Gambit." Blaise Pascal was not an atheist, but he posed the rational choice pretty much as you put it.

From the somewhat lack of response, does everyone else not believe in God, your faith is blind, or you don't like to talk about it? If not, why?

To answer that last question. I'm not answering the original question because it's underlying assumption is that there is one God and the God one person believes in is that same God that another person believes in.

My life experience has shown me that it's way more complicated than that. I have yet to find two people that agree on just what "God" is in the first place.

So do I believe in God? Depends on your definition. Do I believe in your God? Highly unlikely.

Was my spirituality influenced by my parents? Of course it was, though maybe not always in the way that they would have preferred.

    Yes.
Welcome to Pacers Digest! New around here? Here are three tips for making the forum a great place to talk about Pacers basketball.

    • Log in. Even if you want to read instead of post, it's helpful because it lets you:
    • Change your signature options. You can hide all signatures by choosing "Settings" (top right) then "General Settings" (middle left) and unchecking the box "Show Signatures" (in the "Thread Display Options" area).
    • Create an ignore list. I know it may seem unneighborly. But you're here to talk about the Pacers, not argue with someone who's just looking for an argument. Most of the regular users on here make use (at least occasionally) of the "Ignore" feature. Just go to "Settings" -> "Edit Ignore List" and add the names.

    Enjoy your time at PD!

Los Angeles, I think I understand what you are saying, but my questions are to seek out why people believe at all, not who "their" God is.

Anthem, my question isn't simply "Do you believe", but rather why you believe.

you grew up having your parents telling you He is real, or did you decide later on in life that He exists?

Did you believe simply because others believed, or for another reason?

I think the thread title (at least the part in parens) might have been a deterrent for getting some diversity of opinion in here.

Since religion is based on faith, how can you ask anyone to explain how they simply have faith?

Also, many don't want to wear their religion on their sleeve. It's private. To post about it in this way would be awkward. It's not awkward because people don't have faith, it's awkward because they understand others may see things differently.

I don't recall my parents telling me about God. I grew up at a time when just about everyone believed in God, so I at first picked up a belief in God from the culture, or as you put it simply because others believed.

Why I believe in God? Two main reasons. One, when I look around me I just don't think we got here by accident/evolution. For instant take an ordinary house. If I were to tell you nature made your house would you believe me? Of course not, a house shows signs of design, it's so complicated (wiring, plumbing etc,) it has to be made by someone. The earth and the people on it are much more complicated than a mere house. Fact is I believe even our solar system shows signs of design.

I remember a long time ago I was looking at an artists rendering of the solar system. He had pictures of all the planets revolving around the Sun. I had seen the same sort of rendering in others books, everyone has. However, this time I noticed the planets were all revolving around the Sun in the same direction, and seven of them were in the same plane like they were all on a table. I had never thought about it before but it looked organized.

I compared that thought to scientists saying the universe started with a big bang, or explosion if you will, and asked myself how do you get order like found in our solar system out of an explosion? The obvious answer is you don't.

Now I'm not denying the universe started with a big bang, but I'm thinking our solar system fits in with the first verse of the bible where it says in the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

Now that's not a linchpin for me, but observations like that throughout my life have only confirmed my belief in God. The other main reason I believe in God is the aforementioned bible.

I believe in God. I was raised as a Catholic, but don't attend their services much except when I'm visiting my parents. I do not believe in organized religion much, but I don't admonish those who do, I occasionaly do attend services with my wife at her Baptist church.

    Here is my take:

    • There are way to many coincidenses for our existance to be explained to me scientifically
    • I believe that all the different religions pray to the same god, up to and including the Tribal Chieftian that worships 3 shiny rocks on the ground. To me if you recognize a supreme being, your all talking about the same guy. Religions killing each other off in the name of God amaze me with thier stupiditiy.
    • I do not believe that God interferes with our daily lives. (To me it's the only rationalization I can accept after seeing some of the most dispicable acts that one human can inflict on another) I believe he lets us live our lives as we see fit and will judge us in the end on how he thinks we did.
    • Im not sure I believe in hell, I can't see the peacful, all forgiving God, admonishing anyone to a place for their soul to suffer for eternity. I would like to think either your soul continues on, or it's snuffed completely out because you were a real son of a *****.
    Thats my take.....

    Interesting.

Let me just say, the decision for me to come to Iraq was not mine alone. There was and is a reason for me being here. I have not recognized what it is yet - but I know it will become apparent at some point.

I ran across this quote last night by chance, but I think it sums up my thoughts on the question pretty accurately.
