1. ## I need your help (teaching related) [UPDATED REQUEST 11/11/06]

Hello all,

I am currently deep in my production of a Math unit for my 6th grade class (I'm student teaching) that is basketball and Indiana Pacer-themed to make real-life connections and to also motivate the students to want to work with these math skills.

One of the skills the students will be learning is to use proportions and numerical data to estimate future events.

Since the class will be watching Game 4 of the 2000 Finals, I want to have them use stats from Games 1-3 to make predictions before watching the DVD.

I am seeking a volunteer or two to compile the following information from those first three games:

From Reggie Miller:

Total points from each separate game.
Total free throws made from each separate game.
Total free throws attempted from each separate game.
Total field goals made from each separate game.
Total three point shots made from each separate game.
Total three point shots attempted from each separate game.
Total rebounds from each separate game.

From Rik Smits:

The same thing.

From Shaquille O'Neal:

The same thing.

From Kobe Bryant:

The same thing.

If one or a few of you could do this for me, it would be GREATLY appreciated (more than you know!). Thank you in advance for any and all assistance!

- Hicks

3. ## Re: I need your help (teaching related)

That's quite a bit of it, thank you!

I'm also looking for FGA's, and of course 3P attempts and makes.

But that's a lot of it!

4. ## Re: I need your help (teaching related)

Hicks,

I applaud your efforts. Hope this helps.

5. ## Re: I need your help (teaching related)

Mark beat me to it, but I ended up finding the three point made/attempts, and the FG made.

6. ## Re: I need your help (teaching related)

Hicks,

Noticed an error on my part. Shaquille's FTA in Game #2 should be 39, not 29.

I never could type.

MJB

7. ## Re: I need your help (teaching related)

I was young at the time and my hatred for Shaq blinded me, but good lord was he dominant. 24 rebounds?!?

That's the kind of math that will make you puke.

9. ## Re: I need your help (teaching related)

Hicks,

Sounds like a great unit/activity. How I wish any of my math teachers had incorporated or even made optional a sports context for certain functions with numbers.

I don't know your class/routine big picture and I know student teaching has it limitations, however just a thought. Could you get some or your most interested Pacer fan students to compile that info for you. Perhaps volunatrily, as a homework assignment, or as an extra credit assignment ahead of time?

Just an idea. Of course you have the advantage of knowing the Pacer and stats nuts here can help out. It could also be part of the students learning process, too, and at the same time reduce the significant prep you are obviously putting in. Kudos for the great idea!!

10. ## Re: I need your help (teaching related)

Thank you very much Mr. Boyle et al!

D-BONE,

In the future I might be able to have the students find this information, but this time I am pressed for time and I need to make sure the information is in place.

11. ## Re: I need your help (teaching related)

Good luck with this Hicks. Sounds like a great lesson. I used The Brawl and its consequences to the players as a character/decision making lesson.

12. ## Re: I need your help (teaching related)

I really like this exercise, Hicks. Bravo. You seem like a cool teacher.

Now, for my other point. Did Shaq have two 40-20 games in the first two and then a "weak" 30-10 one?

Wow.

As I said at the time, Shaq's performance in the 2000 NBA Finals was by far the most dominating performance I've ever seen against the Pacers.

Shaq's performance in the 2000 finals was one of the most dominating performances period.

The Pacers would possibly have a championship if they didn't run into a player having one of the most dominant seasons in NBA history.

15. ## Re: I need your help (teaching related)

Why show them game 4? Show them game 5!!

O'Neal shot 39 free throws in that game? Wow. Shaq sure has declined since that time.

I wish I had that on DVD.

The NBA Entertainment's latest trick has been to go from historical DVDs with documentaries and select games, to championship sets that focus on one team for one season, and includes all of that teams' Conference Finals and NBA Finals games.

Assuming/hoping they do that for the 2000 Lakers (I think there's a decent chance of it since it was Shaq/Kobe's first and most hard-fought title), I could finally have a DVD copy of Games 3 and 5, which I've wanted to see again for a long time.

18. ## Re: I need your help (teaching related)

I'm bumping this because I've made a slight change of plans at the last minute to make this unit better than it would otherwise have been.

I now need the same statistics that Mile Square and Mr. Boyle graciously assembled for me, only now I need them for Game 4, 5, and 6 as well. The reason being, is I needed more numbers to work with so the students would have a meaningful set of data to find the mean, median, and mode of this information. Having Games 1-3 given before we watch game 4, making them responsible for collecting the data of Game 4 (with myself having the real numbers in case there are errors), and then following up by showing them the stats of 5 and 6, will do that for me.

Time is of the essence, so I'm hoping this can be posted before the night is over. THANK YOU very much to any and all willing to help me out!

20. ## Re: I need your help (teaching related) [UPDATED REQUEST 11/11/06]

Oye. I also realized that even the first time I made a request, I forgot to ask for field goals attempted.
